What do you think of our Wang? Slot Worthy?

I thought our Wang looked impressive today. Displayed some really nice command and touched 96 on the gun. Several lamented over spending the 50k on him in the Rule 5 draft. I know that he's never spent more than a week over High-A, but he had an insane 44-4 K:BB ratio. As a LH, I would love to have him make the 25 man roster if he can keep up the work. Some have said that he has starter material, maybe even a #3 type ceiling. I dont know how'd you pass him back through though to get him to AAA and stretched out. Is he worthy of a 25 man slot if he keeps up today's performance for the entire spring?

He sure looks impressive and i love that he throws strikes.

BTW, how did the Pirates acquire Wang because it doesn't show anything on baseball reference?

I want him on the squad big time. I agree, protect him early and hopefully we can keep him all year. What happens next year? Can he be dfa'd?

With a 12-man pitching staff, there's always room for a project. We had success with Graeme Lloyd and mixed results with guys like Al Reyes and Jose Mercedes. I always like the rule V draft. Seems like a good pick and he has a chance. Plus until Gorzy is throwing, I won't count on him.

Please explain how he was eligible for the Rule V? He was drafted in 2011, but needed TJ surgery and didn't play in the minors until 2013. I thought you had had ti be in the minors for 5 or 6 years without being added to the 40 moan roster to be eligible for the Rule V draft...

I think it was something to do with a contract being voided like what happened to Cody Scarpetta. It was discussed in the thread when the Brewers drafted him.

Hopefully they at least let him start the season on the roster to see how he performs in low-leverage situations in real MLB games.

Obviously there are players like Mike Leake who go straight from college to MLB, but when is the last time someone Wang's age stayed in the major leagues without having played above Rk? Bob Feller eighty years ago?

If RRR cannot figure out how to use a leftie with a 96 mph fastball and good curve and 10:1 k:bb ration then I retire as a brewer fan

Who are these unnamed people who lamented spending 50k on a mid 90s strike throwing leftie. I have written early and often you do all to kee the guy. I hope RRR is up to the not so difficult challenge

I wish we could work out a deal with the Pirates to keep him and let him go to the minors as a starter but if that can't be done, I'd keep him on the big league roster. Hiding a lefty reliever from matchups is the easiest thing to do and it won't be a complete waste of a roster spot either.

Wang played professionally in Korea and was only in Rookie ball because he had surgery, so he's a bit of a unique situation.

Haven't seen this answered yet, but if he spends the whole time up for us this year, can he be sent to the minors next year?

yes. if he remained on the brewers' 40-man roster, he'd enter 2015 spring training with three minor league options.

and for those seeking details on how wang was eligible for the rule 5 draft with so little professional experience, look here.

He has better stuff than the other guys he is competing against; his age and experience probably shouldn't matter as much. The bullpen is still such a toss up right now outside of Henderson, Rodriguez, West, and Kintzler.

Having two lefties would be pretty nice with both being able to go multiple inning or just get a single lefty out if need be.

It will be difficult keeping him in the majors all year with the Brewers going for it this year. However, it could be a big payoff since he would have three options left to figure out if he could be a starter in the majors. Would certainly rather have Wang as a second lefty instead of Duke. It would seem the Pirates might have a hard time putting him on the 40 man roster, so if they can't fit him in then do the Brewers have the right to send Wang down to the minors? Maybe if Gorz starts the year on the DL then they could delay offering him back to the Pirates until the Pirates are in a roster crunch.

Will it be? I actually haven't watched him pitch yet, but from what people have had to say so far, I really don't think it's a stretch to keep a lefty with a FB that operates in the mid-90s.

pirates signed him to a contract, came over and during the physical they found he needed TJ which they then voided the previous deal and signed him to a new contract. by doing that they voided out his "entry" contract (gives him that 5 years of protection in the pirates system) since he signed a second contract, and exposed him to Rule V drafting.
