Knocking some films off my bucket list given the stay at home order.

Last week I knocked off the Soviet 7 hour War and Peace film series. The whole series is huge with thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of extras. It has to be one of the largest productions ever mounted.

What's more, it's really good too.

RIP Brewmeister Smith from Strange Brew

I can't believe someone else came up with this. I actually texted that to two of my brothers today. We all loved that movie. I still laugh just thinking about Max Von Sydow and what he must have thought as he made the film.

For Whatever reason I laughed my ass off the first time I saw that movie.

I also took it upon myself to try to watch this series of films a couple months ago. I've managed to watch the first three, one to go. Definitely not something to watch all in one sitting, but yes, extremely impressive. I've heard that adjusted for inflation, it is the most expensive production ever, costing $700 million in today's dollars.

I actually really enjoyed part II, 'Natasha Rostova' the most. Lyudmila Saveleva had a great performance in that one.

Bondarchuk's 'Waterloo' from 1970, starring Rod Steiger as Napoleon and also featuring Christopher Plummer, is another spectacle featuring more amazing battle sequences.

I can't really watch anything "good" because we only have one TV and my wife will fall asleep within 15 min. She did make it through Knives Out and Jojo Rabbit without a problem though :)

Would like to catch up on some stuff eventually. We saw Booksmart the other day and I thought it was really good. It will never appear on Criterion but it's pretty dang funny.

Best of Enemies

Saw it in the theater, loved it.

Knew my wife would like it (she wasn't with me when I watched it in the theater, MAN, do I miss going to the movies), so since we have FREE showtime currently, we watched it last night. She loved it, and I enjoyed it for a second time.

If you haven't seen it yet, it is worth your time.

I was privy to a preview screener of Amazon's THE VAST OF NIGHT recently. I think it's a very effective genre film with great attention to time period and a lot of style. If you like something like The Twilight Zone of old radio drama science fiction, or heck just like Orson Welles' War of the Worlds, I think you'll like this a lot.

I watched The Gentleman last night and really enjoyed it. The only downside was that it was a little hard to understand at times with the accent.

Also, if you don't like the "C" word, don't watch this movie.

This one is on my list, thanks for the review!

I watch a lot of Brit gangster movies and shows, and the "C" word gets thrown around rather casually in a lot of those shows. To the Brits (and Aussies), the C word is a generic term for "jerk" or "arsehole" or whatever you want to call it. It's definitely not in the same level of nuclear apocalyptic swearword that it is in the US. Apologize if I'm explaining something that people already know, but, there ya go.

Either that or Cardinals.

To me, that C word is much more offensive.

Da 5 Bloods is very good. A sneaky genre film that's always about something and features a terrific ensemble. With Delroy Lindo being a particular standout.

I watched Knives Out again last night (had seen it in the theater last November). Just a really fun movie. Great cast. Not a typical whodunit.

Finally saw it this past weekend. Fully agree with you, Reilly. I really enjoyed the movie. It's a bit of a modern twist and a partial sendup of the classic whodunits. I've seen references to a potential followup/sequel. I'll be curious to see how well that might go.

I think the plan is to just make another Benoit Blanc mystery without any of the Thrombeys. Which could be interesting. If they can make them nearly as good as Knives Out I'd be more than willing to see one every year or two.

Not necessarily a must see, but this past Friday watched "Brian's Song" completely unaware yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Brian Piccolo's death.

Yeah, I read it was going to be following Benoit Blanc - which makes sense. No point it rehashing the rest of the characters - their story is said and done. They got what they all deserved - no point trying to 'top' that. Plus, a new mystery and a new cast offers a way to keep things fresh.

Daniel Craig looks like he is having the time of his life in the movie.

Under the Hall of Very Good to See Movies, I'd add The Quiet Place. Very interesting thriller with very little dialog. Not a horror movie (not gory), but borderline thriller-horror.

And as an added bonus...if you watch closely you realize that the "bad guys" appear in 2020...

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

My kids loved Jaws, but we watched it at home. I think they've seen Jurassic Park, but its been a number of years.

Last weekend was probably the weekend of the year with Palm Springs, The Old Guard, and Greyhound debuting on streaming and First Cow hitting digital purchase. Heck, I heard good things about The Relic as well.

FWIW, Palm Springs is very good.

The Old Guard was fine for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Kind of on the level of John Wick.
