Dubon to SF for Pomeranz and Black

Hard for me to say a 29 year old has huge upside as anything. He strikes out a lot of dudes, walks a lot of dudes and gives up a lot of homers. He's maybe a middle relief type guy.

 

FWIW, he had a lot of buzz coming into this season. The stats back it up, Steamer for example has a rest-of-season projection of 3.01 ERA, 3.10 FIP, 13.3 K/9. Don't just look at his ERA in 25 career innings.

 

He's been walking everybody and giving up homers on top of that in AAA which has led to a 5+ ERA. Forgive me if I find it unlikely that he posts a 3 ERA in the majors.

 

What do you project Dubon to do in the majors?

Dubon was also trash the past 2 years and would likely have been dfa'd by this year. Dubon has been good this year though and was a steep price to pay for Pom.. I can't say this is high on the trade r

And Drew Pomeranz was a big part of why we made the playoffs in 2019.  With how hot we were, who knows how far we’d have gone had Hader not blown the wild card game.

I forgive you. I'm just saying that scouting and impartial projection systems think there is major upside.

 

(And walking everybody is actually not a decisive issue if you are a RP with this kind of strikeout potential)

As a note, Dubon is 25.

Without speaking to the additions of either Pomeranz or Black, I'll go on record as saying the Brewers will never regret trading away Dubon. I just don't see an effective major league bat there. He's a slap hitting version of Hernan Perez with less power. It's all upside with this trade if either Pomeranz or Black provide anything at all.

 

I'll agree with that. Perez is outhitting him significantly. He needs to be on the 25 man instead of Saladino.

Maybe a 1-1.5 WAR utility guy that gets around 300-400 plate appearances per year? So a slightly better Hernan Perez.

Love this!! Pomeranz can help the pen this year. Black could be a nice addition for future. Better than nothing for a light hitting/no walk middle infielder. Personally think Stearns has milked a lot out of these trades.

They could probably just bring back Hernan Perez at some point for cheaper short-term, then.

Pretty sure he's had a couple TJ surgeries.

 

I believe they were both prior to age 26. Relatively healthy since then.

What are the years of control on Black?

 

Controllable through 2024. First arb eligible in 2022

Actually depends on if the Brewers see him as part of the bullpen now or not. May have a full six years of control through 2025. Of course it may not even matter considering he is already 29.

Major injuries. He was drafted out of college in 2011 but after tearing his labrum he didn't even pitch until 2014 (age 23-24), and he missed basically all of 2017 with an elbow injury. He's 29 but he only has 186 career innings across all pro levels.

 

Plus, I actually don't think 29 is that old for a reliever. Very volatile players and the dream is just to catch lightning in a bottle.

Giants got a pretty good young shortstop in Dubon for two pitchers they likely are not going to miss.

 

And here is the absolute kiss of death for Dubon's MLB career.

He may have, but Brewers are without their number one starter for another month, and he hasn't gotten a solid starter to help them stay in the race until he's back. Time's getting short.
