Wisconsin bumped up the next vaccine group from March 29 to March 22.

 

This is people 16+ with health issues of some kind (diabetes, cancer, etc.). Makes a ton of people eligible.

 

No specifics on how they'll enforce the guidelines. Mostly likely just sign something saying you have one of the many issues. But I think those things are up to the places distributing the vaccine.

 

There is no enforcing, just honor system. Which sounds like a horrible idea.

 

It is, and it's why I've been trying to explain why I'll wait a bit.

 

Primary care physicians could have forwarded people with severe conditions to their HCN, and that should have been the group after 75+ and healthcare workers. Far from perfect, it would be subjective, but at least you would capture most people who really need the vaccine.

 

As it stands, you could have lung cancer and a healthy 20 year old jumps in front of you.

 

I do think the DHS guidance allows for 'carrier-level prioritization' within the group or something to that effect, so it does seemingly allow PCPs to use their allotment in a way that targets the most vulnerable. So, there's that.

True, good point. I'm hoping the physicians are good advocates for their patients and are alerting the "powers that be" that patient x really needs to be on the top of the list. We'll see, I'll find out soon enough wit the people in my life at least.

I wished they opened it up to everybody at this point. Primary care physicians should make sure the people that need it are getting it but I am all for Walgreens giving the shot to anybody.

I think (and it's obviously just IMO) you'll see that pharmacies/Walgreens etc. will just open appointments and fill them however they can, while healthcare systems will likely work their priority lists. They've literally had months to identify/prioritize for the larger rollouts, so those lists probably exist already, I'd think....

Around 70% of Wisconsin has a BMI of 25, so there isn't really going to be much of a need for an honor system. Close to the whole state is going to be eligible next Monday. Things are likely going to be somewhat chaotic at first. I hope people are patient.

This is very true. BMI is a pretty bad standard and outdated but a good majority of Wisconsin residents will be eligible next week because of BMI and the other items on the list.

Wasn't a fun experience. I didn't eat for 2 weeks straight. I was wondering if I'll ever eat again at that point.

Number of vaccines reaching Wisconsin has dramatically increased the last couple of weeks. A great sign.

I called Walgreens yesterday and the pharmacist straight up said make up anything on the pre-screen if you see an appointment open. Said there are plenty of doses and even if you just show up they may squeeze you in if they can. The groupings were to prevent running out of supply and it is no longer a concern. This may vary by area.

One thing I have heard is that in at least some places, the supply exceeds the people left in '1B' right now (which is a huge part of the reason 1c was accelerated by a week). So, if you or a family member is eligible on Monday, I'd get on the county/pharmacy/PCP 'interested' lists NOW, as there may be a chance they can get an appointment this weekend.

At Walgreens and just got it. Sitting in the lobby for the post shot waiting period and new shipment came in. Delivery person spoke to pharmacist and said "you got 5 new boxes." Pharmacist laughed and said "we have way more than we are using."

Got my first Pfizer shot yesterday afternoon. County health department organized for school district employees.

 

I had Covid in October, so I was a little worried about side effects on the first shot, but so far just some soreness around the injection site.

Not sure where you are located. We are in Waukesha and went online this morning to schedule an appointment on the Walgreens website. Could not find anything available in Waukesha County or western Milwaukee County. Some Walgreens in Milwaukee did seem to have an abundance of available shots. Called ProHealthcare and both my wife and I able to get appointments at Waukesha Memorial on Friday.

Walgreens availability seems to vary widely by city. Some, as OSS noted, are very open. Others are booked solid.

 

I think there was a brief gap between the 'tiers' that offered some opportunities for supply to exceed demand. Between the hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites that became eligible today for the first time and a widespread reported decrease in this week's supply shipments, I'd think that there'll be a wait again....

Wisconsin is #1 in the nation in vaccine allotment utilized so that particular Walgreens with the extras was probably an outlier.

The Walgreens appts are released in batches so if you log in at one point you may see hundreds and hundreds of slots and if you log in 12 hours later it will be booked solid.

 

New appointments do open up with cancellations so it's sometimes literally one appt that shows up. My advice is to keep the thing open and just refresh periodically, I got an appt for someone doing that.

Saw that Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut every day the rest of this year to people who have documented proof they've gotten the COVID jab...

 

Nothing says changing our ways as a society that made the US so susceptible to COVID-19 like turning its vaccine into a comorbidity for people dying from obesity and related heart/respiratory problems, I guess.

I dunno that the free doughnut will be the thing that pushes people to obesity or stops someone from getting in shape. Just a harmless way to encourage people to get jabbed. Doubt it's changing anyone's dietary practices.

One of my colleagues who's just shy of 65 has been on this kick and I don't think he's going to listen to my encouragement to just get it done. He is exactly as much in contact with students as I am.

 

Any administered vaccine is progress toward an end to the pandemic.
