It's kind of exciting, I was more excited that they opened things up to 12+ this week. All muted though that we lost a parent at my school last week, he caught it shortly before he had the chance to get signed up.

I kind of liked my mask outdoors when it was cold. Better than a scarf

 

 

Not I. As a glasses wearer, they would constantly fog up if the mask wasn't set "just right" up against my glasses. Annoying as hell.

I have never worn contacts more in my life than I have the past year+, specifically for this reason.

COVID or no COVID, I'm seriously considering masking up during future winters. It was nice to go through this past winter without runny nose/stuffed nose/common cold.

Public transit masks should exist forever. I understand why that would never happen (not even sure I really would want that), but jeez I can't imagine how much illness spread that would reduce alone.

You guys gotta get the masks that pinch up at the bridge of your nose. Well, maybe not anymore thankfully, but that worked like a charm for me.

My oldest turned 12 May 4, and he's said from the beginning that he wants to get vaccinated as soon as he is able to. He goes in for his first shot at 7:30 a.m. next Tuesday.

My 16 year old is totally against it. Sucks, but I'm not going to force him. At that age, their opinions are solely based on the input of their friend base, I'm afraid.

Yup, I have several masks like that. Even those are not perfect. They'll work for a while and then things shift and fog begins again.

 

I WILL agree with the whole "keeping the face warm" thing, as well as wearing them in future winters to try to combat the runny noses and other cold symptoms a bit.

I believe I posted something akin to this earlier, but for younger individuals particularly students and 20 somethings we've over focused on death as the big downside. Particularly with the new variants there risk of boring Covid is still very high and many of them would suffer quite a bit either educationally or financially if they end up just having to take 2 weeks off. Factor in the fairly high number that end of with long covid. We currently have a senior honors level student whose multi-month battle has put them in danger of not graduating as an example. I believe the Mayo study I had seen reported on indicated that close to a 1/3 of all covid sufferers regardless of initial severity had lingering symptoms. Next year is already going to be tough if I try and extrapolate what that type of impact would be on my teaching with a school wide outbreak... I certainly understand the difficulty of convincing teenagers, but maybe that helps.

I've worn contacts since 7th grade (glasses since 5th grade). Sadly... this year started the time when I needed reading glasses. So when I was in the office (mostly working from home), wearing my reading glasses or safety glasses was a pain. I learned to tuck the mask up under the nose bridge. Still a pain though.

Afraid of what? You have about 48 things to be more afraid of with a 16 year old than Covid.

I think he means it in the sense of being disappointed or it being unfortunate.

 

Not in the sense he is literally afraid/terrified because of it.

Just to clarify I meant "I'm afraid" as an expression and not actually implying fear over anything.

 

"I'm afraid I can't make it into work today."

 

"I'm afraid it looks like rain tonight."

 

"16 year old kids are much more influenced by friends than parents, I'm afraid."

What about all the medical professionals also telling you to get it? Seems like that should factor heavily into a health decision. But that's just my opinion, of course.

You are right. There probably shouldn't have to be such a massive marketing campaign over something that by all appearances looks like a common sense decision for most everyone. Pretty much every datapoint out there indicates that not only are the vaccines extremely safe, they are also extremely effective. I'm not real sure who needs to hear that from a professional athlete or Tom Hanks to take it seriously.

I went to several stores yesterday, and some, like Menards, still have signs indicating that they require masks (which no one enforces, and people walk right by maskless). Not a sign to be seen at Walmart though. I would estimate in northern Wisconsin that there is less than 50% mask compliance now, which sounds fine when you consider that Oneida County where I live has a 50% vaccination rate, but I figure that a strong majority of those who are still wearing masks out in public are also fully vaccinated. There are plenty of people up here that act as if COVID is a fairy tale, and they have for awhile.

I’d echo 99% where I’m at. Until this week, people not wearing masks were the vaaaast exception.
