"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Pretty cool. One of the best 60 game stretches there ever was.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Awesome. Who's the last set up man to do that?

Was just scrolling thru trying to find that out & it looks like Scott Williamson for the 1999 Reds.

His 19 saves were 2nd on the team to Danny Graves' 27, but he threw 93 IP in 62 games. Graves had 111 IP in 75 games. They also had Scott Sullivan with 73 games & 113 IP. Those three combined for 6.5 WAR. Pretty crazy how much bullpen usage has changed in the last 20 years.

Well deserved. As good of seasons as the other two had, neither was transcendent. Williams' season was. You can say what you want about value of relievers or sample size, but it is hard to overlook being THAT dominant.

Not bad for the #16 prospect on the BF.net pre-season Top 25.

If we've got 15 guys better than Devin we should be in pretty good shape for some time to come.

Not that I can be impartial, but I think they got it right. And glad they did - it's so hard for a reliever to win the ROY. And a non-closer had never won the NL ROY. He had to be that good.

Devin Williams got a 10th place MVP vote and was not given out by one of the two MIL voters. The vote came from a CIN voter.

Ryan Tepera also received a 10th place vote

Is there any chance the Brewers try to turn Williams into a starter? He has a 3 pitch mix and can warm up the radar gun enough to make me think it is possible. It is easier to find relievers than starting pitchers. Woodruff Burnes Williams. What are the chances?

He used to be a starter, so not impossible, but I don't think they plan to mess with what he has become...

His transformation occurred when he went from a piggyback starter to a reliever (and became “Dave”). Developing into a bullpen pitcher appears to have had a huge positive impact on him and contributed to his significant increase in velocity, so it would be risky to revert back to the role he was previously scuffling in.

Maybe we can just cut-n-paste the old Hader - starter or reliever discussion here? :laughing

Yes, starters are harder to find and more valuable. But realize how hard it is to succeed in the MLB in general. Williams was listed outside the top 10 on the Brewer prospect list at the start of 2020 and completely off it a couple years ago. He found a spot where he can succeed and excel.

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Plus, remember he missed the playoff "series" against the Dodgers because of shoulder fatigue, after a 60 game season...Williams excelled as a late-inning reliever, so he's a reliever.

Off top of my head I think I seen 97IP as his highest he's pitched in a season 4years ago? Last when he was still starting. It is something to look at when you wonder on a SP vs RP. Players only have so long before exposed to Rule 5 or added to 40man. Williams missed that SP by a lot. I don't think you would want to call up a SP from the minors unless he was on pace for 130 plus IP by the end of that season. This way 30starts-5IP 150IP workload can be feasible the next season.
