Justin Turner to re-sign with Dodgers

Can't compete over 15mil a year. Sad news. Over under on Dodgers wins has climbed to 122 imo. Brewers sit anywhere from 74-87. Think with Turner it would have been 82-92.

You think the over/under is that the Dodgers will go 122-40 next season? I'll take the under.

Added Bauer and resigned Turner. 116 wins based on pct last season.Aside from SD what team in Division is fielding an 80 win team? NL central is filled with 80win teams that will have at least 1 exceed since half games played vs eachother.

I will also take the under considering the most wins ever was 116.

The NFL is not without its warts, but I've truly come to appreciate their competitive balance. It is something that no other sport has been able to achieve.

Market size is irrelevant to winning. Dynasties are extremely rare and those who build then truly earn it. Likewise most perennial doormats put themselves in that situation and didn't get there by being outspent.

The number of unique champions in last 10 championships

MLB: 8 (no cap)

NFL: 8 (cap)

NBA: 7 (cap)

NHL: 7 (cap)

I would say dynasties are equally as rare in MLB. Where's the dynasty in baseball since maybe the Yankees of 96-01? I guess maybe the every other year Giants?

Market size is irrelevant in the NFL because of the national TV deals. It's why markets like Tampa can support the Super Bowl winning Bucs but not the Rays.

If you want to bring about more revenue parity, you can look at evening out the disparity between the local media rights deals or try to sign more national TV deals. But capping employee salary will not make things more fair for the smaller media market teams.

I guess "realist" and "pessimist" are synonymous when you're a Brewer fan, huh?

Depends on how you look at it. I view realism and pessimism as too different things.

You shouldn't question anything the team does. Just wave your pom poms and convince yourself that the front office and ownership can do no wrong or you are not a real fan according to a few.

Nobody ever says you can’t question the front office or the moves that are made and in every single transaction thread there are supporters and detractors.

If all it took was a 2 year deal I would have been fine giving him $40M over those two years. Spending that money on pitching is nowhere near the upgrade spending that money on Turner would have been.

Doubt $6 million over 2 years would've gotten him to change his mind. I think at minimum you would have to guarantee 3 years.

It’s rare to repeat/have dynasties in baseball because the playoffs are far more volatile than other sports.

If you put together a list of payroll size over the past 10 years and placed it next to a list of playoff appearances...I suspect the two lists would look awfully similar.

As a large market team, you’ve got a chance year after year. As a small market team, you’ve got to hope you win the playoff crapshoot during your 1-2 year window.

I don't get this idea that we should go with what we have for a lineup and sign more pitching when this lineup is amongst the worst in MLB.

Based on your posts over the past six months, I don't think anyone has bought into the 60-games in 2020 perfectly reflecting reality more than you have.

Turner was never coming here as long as the Dodgers wanted him back. The only question was how many years and dollars from LA it would take.

Brewers offered 2 years 35 million. If that's the case then they have money to play with that we didn't think they had. Use it and make the club better. Walker and Jeffress would be nice.

As much of a bummer as it is being the bridesmaid yet again, there is a bit of a silver lining in that news. They are willing to spend money to make sizable improvements.

If they were willing to throw that kind of money at Turner, I wonder if there is any chance they make a play for Kris Bryant? Probably wishful thinking.

Per Jon Heyman:

Brewers offered about the same $34M over 2 years for Justin Turner, and also made a 3-year bid with a somewhat lower annual salary. Also, Wisconsin tax is lower than California tax. So overall, good try.

I would love this but there is no way they going to ship him to Milwaukee. They are about get swamped in Chicago by the Sox and to help the Crew would be death to them locally. If your Stearns make the call though.

Well I guess at least this news has given Haudricourt another chance to revel in his "Brewers can barely afford to keep the lights on" narrative. I'm convinced that nobody associated with covering/following the Brewers enjoys the moments when the team falls short more than he does.

It does truly seem like he thinks that Laurel and Wendy are still running the team.

I could write 100% of his stories and he never gets any scoops. Must be the cushiest job in journalism.

Facts. Dude is washed. Need new blood to bring some life and some push back on the we are broke scenario.

I love how he condescends to fans questioning the Brewers not spending money because they're losing so much money and how the fans don't know what they're talking about. Sure Tom, I'm sure Mark has definitely opened the books for you.

We have seen this before where they come up short on one guy and then pocket the money offered and do nothing. The hope is if this money has been earmarked to player salaries that it still will in some shape or fashion. You can't go into this season with what they have at third base. Shortstop is always going to be a problem as long as Arcia is around so something has to be done on the left side.

Funny but I’ve used this exact same argument for baseball’s superior format. For much of the last 20 years the Mets, Dodgers (until recently), Angels, Cubs, Tigers, etc have spent wildly with minimal success. The As, brewers, Rays, and others have had nice success without high payrolls and frivolous spending.

Almost forgot to mention, this would now be an excellent moment for the Brewers to offer the Dodgers a trade for Edwin Rios.

Yes. Yes it would. I can't believe Marwin Gonzalez got 1 year 3 million. seems like they were all in on Turner and got caught holding the bag. Need a bounce back. Fast.

I have no doubt they'll do something there soon. There's no way they go into the season with only two untested right-handed hitters vying for the spot. It's just a matter of if the decision is something with some upside, or if its completely underwhelming. I honestly don't know if a guy like Jake Lamb provides any excitement, but he'd at least be a warm body.

“So overall, good try.”

I don’t know why this from Heyman cracked me up so much.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Speaking of new blood, I think Robert Murray came onto the scene like 4 years writing Brewer's beat for the Athletic and now it seems he gets a ton of national scoops. Wonder how that happened?

For whatever it is or isn't worth, BPro projects the Brewers to score the 13th most runs in 2021 even without Turner...

https://www.baseballprospectus.com/standings/

Between that and Stearns & company's track record assembling cromulent offenses in the four full seasons prior to the pandemic altered 2020, I'd imagine they'll end up closer to average than the worst in the league for 2021...

2016: 99 wRC+ (19th)

2017: 100 wRC+ (15th)

2018: 105 wRC+ (11th)

2019: 103 wRC+ (12th)

2020: 89 wRC+ (25th)

Even with the poor showing in an abbreviated 2020 they still weren't really among the worst in the league with a healthy gap between their 89 wRC+ & the 73/76/76 marks posted by PIT, TEX & COL.

If the pitching holds up their end of the bargain we could be in store for a fifth consecutive summer of competing for a postseason appearance.
