2021-06-21: Brewers (Anderson) at Diamondbacks (Kelly) [Brewers lose, 5-1 -- Anderson exits with an injury; Dbacks snap 17-game losing streak]

Consider this astonishing stat. The DBacks are 1-39 in games in which they have scored 4 or fewer runs. By comparison the Brewers are 14-28 when scoring 4 or fewer runs. That disparity can only be explained by better pitching, not because the Brewers hit more HRs.

I acknowledge the role of run prevention, but the Brewers essentially need HRs to have offense adequate enough to produce wins. HRs produce 29% of runs (apart from runners on base) while only 21% of DBacks offense. Watching the 2nd inning, the DBacks got 3 runs off 6 hits, all of which are singles. The Brewers have had three run innings, but I can't remember the last time that happened where a HR wasn't involved.

The Brewers need for HRs because of their low BA and OBP, and the DBacks horrible record are completely unrelated items. You can (and should) make the point that the Brewers need the HR ball to produce runs without ever mentioning the DBacks.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

The back of this bullpen is just absolute rotating hot garbage. Godley had no business on an MLB roster, and Milner doesn't really either.

The good news is; I’m sure Milner will be gone after tonight.

Jake Cousins is up in the Brewers bullpen. Didn’t take long for him to get some game action in his MLB debut.

The Brewers offense is the perfect tonic for a team trying to break a 17 game losing streak while starting a pitcher with a 5 plus ERA.

Fair enough. I guess I was comparing stats going into the series and it was even more apparent than usual when seeing that the Brewers only offensive advantage over the DBacks was a sizable HR differential and a couple of walks.

I only went back a couple weeks, but 5 of 6 of their last 3-run innings didn't involve a homerun:

6/10 - 6th inning - 3 runs on 1 1B, 1 2B, 2 BB

6/11 - 7th inning - 5 runs on 1 1B, 1 2B, 6 BB

6/12 - 4th inning - 5 runs on 2 1B, 2 2B, 2 BB

6/13 - 6th inning - 3 runs on 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 BB

6/17 - 7th inning - 3 runs on 1 2B, 2 BB

6/18 - 5th inning - 3 runs on 2 1B, 1 2B, 1 E

Jake Cousins is the 49th player that has appeared for the Brewers this season. Seems like a lot, especially on July 21st.

I think they put up a graphic earlier showing it's the most in the big leagues.

Cousins looks like he might be a keeper. Wow

I want to be happy, but it mostly infuriates me. Why have we trotted out Godley on multiple call ups with guys like Cousins available? His stuff is clearly better. I get hes not doing this every night, but he passes the eye test 1,000 times over from what Godley brings. It’s frustrating we trot out long track records of suck instead of giving other guys a shot.

I can't wait for someone to refer to Cousins as "a righthanded Josh Hader"

I can’t wait for the day we refer to Josh Hader as a lefthanded Jake Cousins.

Cousins never pitched above A ball prior to this year. He threw 8.2 IP in AA, then 9 IP in AAA before getting called up.

I'd say that's a pretty fast track to getting a shot.

Dbacks were 2-31 in their last 33 games.

That's a monumental level of terrible.

They had to break that losing streak sooner or later. Hopefully we can get back on track tonight. The only good thing is the Cubs lost too...
