LHP Clayton Andrews is currently on track for an early to mid September return to game action.  However, the organization is still deciding whether to have him return at that point or wait until instructional camp this fall.  Unfortunately, it also appears that his days as a two-way player have come to an end, although that was always somewhat of a long-shot.

I wonder about the wording of the rule that a pitcher has to face X batters. Could Andrews pitch to someone, then go to the OF for one batter, then back to pitching?

Bettinger's only 27 years old. I'm surprised the parties decided to move on, but I have to admit that something's been off throughout 2022 for him.

Russell Smith's injury leaves Wisconsin with 13 pitchers (vs. 15 for Biloxi and 15 for Carolina). Hopefully that means a promotion from Carolina is in order, as there are many legitimate options (e.g. Stiven Cruz's 85K / 17BB ratio; excellent bullpen work from Michele Vassalotti, Pablo Garabitos, Miguel Guerrero, Karlos Morales, Brannon Jordan; or even today's starter Alexander Cornielle - season ERA 3.47 with 10.9 K/9).

Bettinger hasn't been good since 2019. I had hoped he would bounce back this season, but he didn't.

I'm pulling for Morales.  2017 pick is still only 22.  Carolina has 4 lefty relievers.  Its time they share with WI.

But all of the pitchers you mentioned are worthy of a callup.

I know we're more hesitant here after last weeks mishap... but after a peculiar Jeferson Quero instagram story, I replied to it asking if he was going to the Timber Rattlers, and he confirmed he is being promoted.

Believe I have enough to post on this thread now.  SS Eric Brown, Jr. and 1B Branlyn Jaraba have been promoted to A Carolina.  I spoke with Jaraba this morning and also confirmed with Brown that they both had arrived last night.

To add on top of this post, a few other moves were just officially posted:

INF Robert Moore has been assigned to the Carolina Mudcats
INF Ben Metzinger has been assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
INF Jheremy Vargas has been assigned to the AZL Brewers Blue (from the Mudcats)

This promotion of C Jeferson Quero to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina is confirmed on the transaction pages.

Also, C Alex Hall is moving down to Low-A Carolina from High-A Wisconsin to back-fill Quero's spot.

21-year old Venezuelan INF Luis Silva was signed as an international free agent in July 2017, debuting with a ho-hum 2018 DSL season (.558 OPS, 5 of 10 stolen base attempts) before putting up interesting numbers as a 17/18 year old in Arizona ball in 2019 (.295 AVG and .683 OPS, though boosted by a .361 BABIP).

After the lost Covid 2020, Silva repeated in Arizona ball in 2021, struggling to replicate his 2019 effort (dipping to a .517 OPS) in limited playing time (71 plate appearances). Moving up to Low-A Carolina in 2022, he was listed as a catcher in the initial roster, which was perhaps indicative of a grand transition plan, though only 3 of his 405+ innings this year have been behind the plate. Unfortunately, his .445 OPS this year couldn’t help him to stick around longer. We wish him success in his upcoming ventures.

23-year old RHP Junior Montero from the Dominican Republic was signed as an international free agent in August 2018 and had a solid 2019 debut season (2.88 ERA in 18 DSL games; 2.25 ERA in 4 Arizona games; though with a WHIP of 1.79 that year). He was even better in the first half of 2021 (2.11 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 13.1 K/9 in 12 Arizona games), earning a promotion to Low-A Carolina (1.93 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 6.4 K/9 in 5 games).

Montero has had an up-and-down 2022 in Low-A Carolina (4.78 ERA, 1.41 WHIP), but his 11.0 K/9 ratio and 6-1 record suggested he might get a longer leash. Releases are very difficult this time of year, but I guess the 29 walks in 32 innings pitched was a possible sticking point. With his lively arm, don’t be surprised if Montero keeps at the baseball dream, but either way we wish him tremendous success in his next opportunity inside or outside of baseball.

27-year old Virginian RHP Alec Bettinger was selected in the 10th round of the 2017 draft. Borrowing from @Mass_Haas: “It was a fantastic showing at AA Biloxi in 2019 (1.07 WHIP, 157 K in 146.1 IP) that netted Bettinger a late summer 2020 invite to the alternate training site and a 40-man roster spot that fall. Four 2021 MLB appearances, including a difficult debut start at the Dodgers, is what Bettinger can look back on at this time from a big-league perspective. His diminished role in the system came pretty abruptly this year. Hoping Alec can hook on quickly with another organization and flash his potential again, as he just turned 27 years old last month.”

I will add that Bettinger put up respectable numbers in AAA Nashville in 2021, considering that it was his first year at that level (4.75 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 9.1 K/9 in 96 2/3 innings), though something has unfortunately been off all season in 2022, best exemplified by his 6.49 ERA and surprisingly low 5.5 K/9 ratio in 34 2/3 frustrating innings. Thank you for your contributions, Mr. Bettinger, and good luck in your future activities!

The Brewers have signed RHP Jonathan Beymer as an undrafted free agent out of Campbell University.  He is a 6’2” 180 lb. right-handed pitcher that has spent the majority of his collegiate career as a reliever.  Soon-to-be 24-years-old, Beymer has seen something click this summer between two wood-bat league teams after struggling with Campbell the past two seasons.

RHP Mason Vinyard has been signed as an undrafted free agent out of Western Kentucky University.  6’2” 210 lb. relief pitcher that showcased exceptional strikeout stuff this year.

Interesting note on both Beymer and Vinyard. They were both on the Wabash Valley College roster in 2018-19, which is where the Brewers drafted Antoine Kelly out of that same year. Guessing they have been following both of them since that time.

It appears we have another DSL signing: 19-year old, 6'2" right-handed hitting catcher Juan Rosa, who's debuting today for DSL Brewers-1 as a designated hitter.

I'll raise your Juan Rosa one, C Estefano Lozano - the 18-year-old 6'0" righty was just assigned to the DSL Brewers 2.

AND, we have a flurry of moves all at once:

  • LHP Karlos Morales was assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from the Carolina Mudcats (Congrats, Karlos!)
  • RHP's Aidan Maldonado (2022 14th Rd pick) and Jacob Misiorowski (2022 2nd Rd pick) were both assigned to the ACL Brewers Gold
  • LHP's Brian Fitzpatrick (2022 10th Rd pick) and Nate Peterson (2022 8th Rd pick) and RHP Will Rudy (2022 5th Rd pick) were all assigned to the ACL Brewers Blue

Nice to see Morales finally find success after struggling for so long.  Really surprised that they hadn't released him after his 2017-2019 years.  Makes you wonder what the thresholds are and why some guys like him get a longer leash while others are out in year 2.

22-year-old RHP Jhoan Cruz, who struggled in a full 2021 season with Carolina (20 appearances, 15 starts) in which he limited walks but in exchange was much too hittable, was transferred to the "Full Season" Carolina IL.

Cruz had not pitched this season. He opened 2022 on the 7-day IL, was shifted to the 60-day on June 1st, and now a final adjustment.
