Mets +180 point differential / Padres +45 ----- Mets get ousted

LA Dodgers +334 point / Padres +45 ---- Dodgers get ousted

Yankees +240 / Indians +64 ---- Yankees on doorstep of losing series

Braves +180 / Phillies +62 -----Braves get ousted

What is your point? That having no chance because the other team is better on paper only applies to us? Astros are the only team so far that actually went out and dominated the opponent they were vastly better than on paper.

My point is — the Phillies are a better team than MKE and should have made the playoffs over the Brewers, which they did.

Imo, anyone that thinks the ‘21 Brewers were a playoff caliber team is mistaken. They missed the playoffs because they should have missed the playoffs.

Don't you mean the '22 Brewers?

No it doesn't vindicate Stearns. It condemns him. Philly would not have even made the playoffs had Stearns not torpedoed the team. That could have been the Brewers moving on to the NLCS. But no.

Stearns didn’t torpedo the team.

They started a franchise best 32-18.

Over the next two months they went 25-27 with Hader losing four games personally and posting an 8.31 ERA.

If Hader pitched like his normal self for those two months and the Brewers were seven up at the deadline instead of only a three game lead with an imploding closer, do you think Stearns still would have traded him?

Well then that has nothing to do with my original post.

I mean, they clearly were. They barely missed the playoffs. A sliver better fluke luck at some point in the season and they make it. 5 other teams had similar  run differentials near +50, they made the playoffs.

This is just the crapshoot that is the playoffs.

Yup thats why 8/30 should be the maximum that get in.  Regular season really doesnt mean much when its 5th place vs 6th place in NLCS

Playoff baseball is amazing, MLB should be thinking of as many ways as possible to give its fans more high stakes baseball. At least we have the WBC to look forward to next year.

All this talk about MLB “needing” a big market team in the LCS infuriates me. There’s nothing better for the sport than having these long-suffering franchises make the World Series runs and it’s going to pay massive dividends in TV ratings and attendance in those cities in 2023. And all of us who are fans of the sport are going to see some new faces for a change.

If the ratings suck, too bad.

All right, are we rooting for the Padres due to our boy Josh and their World Series drought (which is the same as ours) or the Phillies and their high-powered lineup?

Economically Padres because the last time the Phillies won the world series there was the great recession soooo....

Seriously though I would rather see the Phillies than the Padres.  I just can't cheer for a team with Machado on it.

Just a preemptive reminder. This isn't a thread to rehash the Hader deal. There's several others for that. Can we please keep this about the 2022 MLB Postseason? Thank you.

Are you administration?

We do need a World Series with Bryce Harper in it.

No thank you, I can't stand that guy.  He is one of the few players I actively root against.

No. But I created this thread to discuss the playoffs specifically, and don't think it's out of bounds for me to respectfully ask that of my fellow posters.

So by creating a thread, you then get to control the content that other members post?

Interesting take.

Clearly you don't understand the difference between a mandate and a request. Generally, one of the basic rules of a forum is you stick to the topic at hand. Is that really too much to ask?

The Astros just know how to get it done in the postseason. That they've managed to stay this consistently successful despite so many of the key principals from their 2017 World Series championship team having departed is a real testament to the system they've built. Please dial up your old front office pals Stearns and ask them for their secret!

Not sure how anyone can root for the Astros.  They get caught cheating in 2019 after making 2 of the 3 previous WS, and winning one. They have no legitimate excuses for their actions.  They are set to face some pretty hostile road crowds in 2020, but are bailed out by COVID. They still have some pretty prominent members of those teams on their roster (Altuve, Bregman, Verlander...). Yet, people have just seemed to have forgotten about it.

I get that people hate the Yankees, but I'll root for them any day against the Astros.

They got caught cheating in 2019? I thought the only verifiable proof of cheating came exclusively from their 2017 World Series team (i.e., the banging on the trash cans)...I personally haven't forgotten it for sure, but I've also come to appreciate how consistent and fundamentally sound they are. Something I hope for the Brewers to emulate.
