I wonder if he has options left? It would seem strange to sign the guy only to release him in 3 days when Anderson returns?

Such is the life of a 4A players these days. Unless an infielder gets hurt while Anderson is gone I'm sure Jones will be DFA'd when he comes back.

Turang could be sent down again.

I’m curious to know …

How many on this board had actually heard the name Jahmai Jones before today? (I had not)

How many on this board have done a deep dive on his history after today’s game? (I have)

BTW - he’s been CRUSHING lefties in AAA this season (.386)

I remember him being mentioned as one of the only bright spots in the Angels system when it was at its nadir. Had no idea what had happened to him since then, though.

I've followed him.  He was really bad in 2021 and I sort of wrote him off after that, but that was a small sample.  He has definitely hit at AAA this year and he will draw walks  His defense is below average at 2b and OF.  Likely a AAAA type player.  Though he is still young yet, so you never know.

I'm hesitant to call someone under the age of 26 with less than 100 MLB PAs a "AAAA" player.

He was really impressive in small samples in the AFL at the ages of 20 and 21.  Then, who knows what happened in 2020, and looks like he was injured in 2021 but had a decent season for a guy who was 3.5 years younger than league average.

The Dodgers have been known to coach some "AAAA"-type of players up to major-league quality after getting them in their system...

I'd heard it...never in a million years would I have been able to come up with it and only remembered I'd heard of it when I saw he was a former Angels farmhand.

I saw him pinch hitting and said aloud who the-__ is that...and before the word that came out, the ball left his bat at 108 and was going over Tauchman's head!

So more vaguely remember who he was I guess more than the name.

I won't be forgetting soon.

Good teams have players who come out of nowhere.

I'm not sure we're the prior yet or that he'll be the later, but it's baseball...it happens.

When I saw his #s at OkC (especially the OPS & ability to draw walks) I assumed he was around 28 or 29. Still not 26 yet, that surprised me.

It'll be interesting to see what they do if he gets another chance or two & produces. Someone mentioned him replacing Turang. That's straight out of the Bill Schroeder "the bat plays" gospel, which is hell & gone from always being true. Unless he's a much better defender than I understand him to be that won't happen. Since Turang can be your 2nd SS you COULD have him replace Monasterio. Either way, it's nice to learn he has an option left.

Would love to know what Hiura thinks of this.🤔

I'd argue the bat players more on this team than any other, but Turang is just a winner. He had a disappointing game today(at least 2 opportunities to make contact and get a run in with less than 2 out and he went out of the zone). But the first couple days he made some incredible plays to save runs and was barreling up the ball.

Also, I don't think Schroder believes that you put the bat out there irrespective of defense. He wasn't pushing for Braun to play 3B. I think he's saying the bat always plays as in...they'll find a place for him. And if this guy can hit, particularly vs lefties, they will find a place for him.

Good hitters don't languish away on the bench.

Anyway, I really do think Turang and these young guys change this team. They make them more than the sum of their parts. The presure they put on with speed, they mostly draw walks, great defense and they're just exciting.

As for Hiura, I think his fate at the moment rests on Winker and Tellez. Whom I both still believe in, but who are running out of time(Winker in particular).

There's probably also a bit of trepidation given this is likely Hiura's last shot with the Brewers...and if you're gonna bring him up and play him 2-3 times a week, he's likely to struggle. I'd guess if Winker doesn't hit in the next 3 weeks, Hiura becomes the DH(Which would hurt given what we were counting on from him).

I was banking on Adames, Tellez, Contreras and Winker to have productive seasons, Frelick to be a really good rookie and Mitchell to basically do what Wiemer's doing except without the splits vs lefties.

We've really only got one of those 4 in Contreras and Yelich is suddenly looking like the player we traded for(not the one we extended per say, but traded for).

Yet despite all the players who've performed well below expectations without Woodruff and several other injuries.

Feeling pretty good about where we're at right now.

Or put another way, Jones coming from another club’s farm system then straight to the major leagues  in Milwaukee shows what the organization thinks of Keston Hiura.

I don't know that the organization views Jones as filling the same role as Hiura.  Anderson is a 3B and RF.  Jones is primarily a 2B but has also played OF.  Miller/Monasterio are your 3B while Anderson is out and thus the need for another infielder who can fill in their role as the backup 2B and Anderson's role as a backup OF.
