Playing service time manipulation games in late July in a close division race feels like the height of idiocy. If he's valuable keep him where he is.

Yeah … this is good news … the first of what I hope to be several bottom of the roster moves

I can’t understand why Winker remains … Taylor hanging on by a thread too

I prefer promoting our top prospects & AAA players to trading away our future for short-term help

I wonder who is next?

Do we need to add a bat from outside? A starting pitcher?

Please don’t part with Black, Chourio, Quero, or Misiorowski

I'm not sure how you can say he isn't that type of player when basically every scouting report on him states that as his ceiling. If he hits his ceiling we Will absolutely wish we had that extra year of control

We had this debate three months ago and he's got a wRC+ of 84 now. I love his defense but he's not MLB level at the plate.

Because he's not that kind of player. If he's good the Brewers will extend him long before service time becomes an issue. But he's closer to being out of the league than he is ever reaching three years of arbitration.

We are talking about two weeks to gain a year.

Absolutely correct and the comparisons to Turang are extremely bad faith. Turang was below replacement and the worst non-1B infielder on the roster when he was sent down. Wiemer is the 2nd best OF on the team with Perkins, Taylor, and Tapia all below him on the pecking order so sending Wiemer down would be a blatantly obvious service time manipulation move.

Good move.  Sal is in our long-term plans.  Tapia was not.  If Sal  Tapia at this point, why not?

What's with the Weimer talk?  He should be above Perkins and Taylor on the outfield depth chart.

Right now he's not a good hitter, which is why it would make perfect sense to send him down now. Just because he isn't a good hitter now doesn't mean he won't be a good hitter down the line

Wiemer is closer to being a guy you DFA than being one you worry about paying five years from now.

Look, cutting Tapia was the right and predictable call.  Having said that, given Weimer two weeks in AAA is not going to make or break this team.  The guys isn't hitting, at all.  Sending him down would be perfectly justifiable and not just "service time manipulation".

Honestly, is anyone really worried about needing to spend to pay Wiemer? He's not Fielder or Braun. Wiemer's service time is a complete non-story.

At this moment, sure.  I think the hope for the Brewers is that he eventually figures out how to hit major league pitching.  It may take a couple years to figure that out.  Why not get another year of service time to figure it all out?

Because if it's year five and he hasn't figured it out, then he's obviously not worth paying.

It's not about spending.  It's about giving the player and team as much time and flexibility in determining what the path forward is.

Wiemer wasn’t sent down. Not an issue. This is the Frelick thread.

If people want to discuss service manipulation, perhaps start a thread about it.

It’s and important topic, so I think that would be cool to add.

But if it's year three and he does figure it out, you are going to be very happy to have that extra year.  How does sending him down for two weeks not worth that?

You can literally send him down at any point over the next multiple seasons and get the extra season. Doing it in the middle of a playoff race when he's our second best OF is just absolutely stupid and would be blatantly obvious service time manipulation.

I think the corresponding move is appropriate to discuss. It’s not Winker since he is in the lineup so it’s got to be tapia

Regardless of the corresponding mover, I think we all hope he makes a big difference for the offense..

Done deal. Tapia was sent down about an hour ago. Wiemer stays in Milwaukee. Yea!

Matt, you’re missing the obvious choice. Winker can’t hit (OBP, OPS and BA), can’t hit for power (SLG), he can’t run, he can’t throw, and he can’t play the field. Thankfully we have Arnold making these decisions!

My first thought was my god I hope I never have to watch a Winker at bat ever again.

But nah he's batting cleanup.
