https://theathletic.com/4898780/2023/09/28/mlb-award-cy-young-2023-mvp/ (Paywall, highly recommended )

Per the Athletic straw poll (which is the first sampling I've seen this year), CC is neck and neck with Torey Lovullo of Arizona in the NL MOY race (virtual tie at 28.6%). As we all know, it is an absolute travesty that CC has never won this award. Usually, it's the manager of the hot up and coming team that overperforms preseason expectations who steals it from CC. It was Snitker in 2018, Kapler in 2021, for example. This year that vote is being split between Lovullo and Schumaker for the Marlins. You have to wonder if the Marlins and Dbacks both making the postseason as Wild Cards could be what allows CC to finally bring it home.

Something interesting to watch out for in these closing days of the regular season....

They gave it to Lovullo in 2017, which fair enough, the D-Backs won more games.

Be kinda funny though if he won it again. That would give him 2 MOTYs with a career managerial record of 495-534 from 2017 through today.

Meanwhile, CC is currently at 571-459 over that same 2017 through today stretch.

Yep. Ridiculous. Another reason to root for the Marlins to make the postseason instead of the Cubs as Schumaker should siphon off votes from Lovullo and clear things up for CC.

The NL central being such crap this year is probably what will keep him from winning it.

ALE - 442 W

NLE - 415 W
NLC - 397 W
NLW - 397 W
ALW - 382 W

ALC - 351 W

NL Central and NL West have the exact same number of wins so far. The AL Central has been such crap, the AL East has been a gauntlet, the other four divisions have been pretty close to the middle.

Diamondbacks got all those extra games against the Rockies (worst team in the NL by 11 games) and are still half a dozen wins behind the Brewers.

Skip Schumaker probably now wins NL MOY. He took mostly the same group of Marlins from 93 losses in ‘22 to potentially 86 wins and the #2 wild card this year.

Counsell got robbed of the award by Schildt Snitker and arguably Kapler. This year Schumaker got more out of less. Counsell still has mostly the same group that won  95 games in ‘21.

Yet our own fans keep the myth alive. Makes me crazy.

MLB Radio on Sirius last night said they think it is Schumacher’s award. They said Lovullo is next, with “a nod” to the job CC has done. Oh well.

Same group as 2021?

Ummmm, ok then...

It might be allowable to give it to him now, since he's going to the Mets.

Seriously, I suspect the chances are less than 50-50, which means nothing to me because I know the job the guys' done. If it bothers him I certainly wouldn't blame him, though.

I don’t think he wins.  I think Dave Roberts is going to win it because Dodgers.

He's actually done a pretty good job this year. Roberts has Managed a team that has had a LOT of turnover and different starters.

I don't believe he should win it...but I am impressed with what the Dodgers did. But it's so obvious CC should get the award. He'll likely get his 4th runner up finish though. Just feels inevitable he's destined to never win it.

Yeah, Counsell probably wins it. He is getting talk nationally, especially with his pending free agency.

That'd be the dumbest possible reason. He's earned it...but sure, if him getting talked about going to the Mets get him the MOY award he so clearly deserves...whatever. I would not care. I also wouldn't be upset if he left either, but I couldn't be less worried about it.

Yeah, the NLC wasn't terrible this year. The ALC on the other hand...

Who cares if Counsell wins the MOY award, it is meaningless. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t really care either. This award is there for the fans interest to talk (complain) about and the BBWAA for their own ego and popularity. Let’s’ face it, there were no Manager of the Year before 1983.

People care. He deserves to be honored for his excellence.

Who? I’m sure Counsell stays up all night because he never won the award. Every year he goes to,Spring Training hoping this will be the year he wins the MOY award. It’s MLB intention just to give something for people to talk about during the off-season, nothing more.

He is honored by his paycheck and winning, not by a bunch of baseball writers who know little to nothing about a manager’s job and what takes to win baseball games.

CC won’t win because you have Ross, Bell and Schumaker who all out performed the writers expectations for their team’s records.  It is as simple as that.  The Brewers would have had to win 100+ games for CC to win the MOY.  It is dumb but that is how the writers look at this award.

I don’t even expect CC to be the runner up.  All 3 that were named will be ahead of CC because of the expectations for the teams they managed.  You can even add Lovullo to the list but I think he gets knocked down due to winning it in 2017.  I would give CC about a 5% chance of winning this award.

All of the "will he or won't he?" posts were moved into the Heyman on CC thread. Let's keep this one about the MOY award. Thanks.
