It might be a bitter pill to swallow, but if the Cubs offer something like Horton and Ferris and it is clearly the best package, you take it. However, for several reasons, tie goes to literally any other team (yes, even that one).

You'd make a trade with the Cardinals before the Cubs? Interesting. I'm not sure I agree but it's close either way.

Normally, no, but post-Counsell, the optics add legitimate negative value.

Sure, that makes sense. I just have more confidence that the Cardinals will do something painful to the Brewers over the long-term, which balances the scales.

Starting to sense a trend and wondering if throwing up competing clickbait between team message boards owned by the same entity is some form of weird marketing strategy to generate more revenue for the sites.

Looking forward to the "Cubs likely to sign Hader", "Chourio could net Brewers top pitching prospect in Horton", and "Williams to Wrigley makes sense for Counsell's Cubby pen" threads to hit this board all before the Winter Meetings begin.

Also, for anyone who thinks the Brewers would have interest in Morel as a centerpiece, let me direct you to one Keston Hiura to see how much the current Brewers FO values that sort of profile.

There was enough of a PR disaster when Counsell unknowingly went to the Cubs that knowingly sending Burnes to the Cubs would make what happened to the Counsell sign at that park look like Sunday School.

The Cubs would have to offer the mother of all overpays to get Burnes from the Brewers.  And with the Dodgers and Braves feeling the heat from their playoff collapses, and with both having plenty of starting pitching prospects to send back, it will probably take the mother of all overpays to be significantly better than their offers.

If that was true you’d see a lot more Twins-related stuff.

29 fanbases are drooling over the thought of Burnes right now. Some of the proposed packages are… comical.

Maybe but IMO you should QC what the rival authors post for credibility.  Love the site, the moderation, and love contributing but let’s be honest there are some absurd articles on the front page by Cub fans with no self awareness.   It’s too common.  That’s just the honest truth.

I get it but I think many people here are overvaluing what Burnes is going to return. Do I think it’s better than Morel plus? Probably. But maybe not. My biggest problem with Morel is that he’s not a good fit for the Brewers, either positionally or where the Brewers look to be in the near future.

Lots of teams want Burnes but I don’t think there are that many teams that align with the Brewers interests. I don’t think the Twins line up as well for Burnes as they do Peralta, who will be far more expensive to attain.

And in the end, it doesn’t matter what we think, it only matters what Matt Arnold thinks. Which is why I’m generally loathe to predict trades. It’s like trying to watch a movie peeking through a hole in the fence… from a mile away.

I would trade Burnes to the Cubs or Cards, however I would want extra value. I really like Matt Shaw as a trade piece.

SS Shaw, P Ben Brown, and 1B Matt Mervis would something I would go for. Shaw and Brown as fair value and Mervis as inter-division tax.

I like Horton as a center piece as well Maybe Horton, Mervis, and P Luke Little being close to the above proposal.

Let everyone bid on Corbin and then go to the dodgers and take their package at the end.   Like clockwork.   Watch it happen before Christmas …

The Dodgers certainly need the pitching and they can easily meet Burnes's asking price next winter.

As an example of why fans should try to keep their biases in check, I'm currently arguing with a Twins fan who is outraged that I'd trade Brooks Lee plus prospects (because Lee is an elite prospect, which he's not) for Freddy Peralta (who isn't that good and would be the #4 starter on the Twins, which he wouldn't).

There are lots of good players and prospects in baseball. Don't get overly attached to certain ones because they wear a certain uniform.

Yeah, but that is the hard part about being a fan.  It's tough to remove yourself from caring about these guys.  You get used to them, you appreciate them, and it stings when the good ones leave.

Oh for sure. It's hard to not get excited about a guy for 4-5 years as they mature and come up through the system and no fan is ever going to be completely objective about them. Just try to remember every fanbase feels the same about "their guys".

I’d love for it into be Baltimore, it makes all the sense. But the way they clutch their prospects…

I wonder if they'd ever bump their payroll that much? They've got a good thing going revenue wise right now. I think their payroll was bottom 5 in baseball last year.

Cot’s OD has them 29th, 30th, 27th, 27th and 29th counting back to 2019.

2011-18 they came in at 16th, 12th, 16th, 15th, 14th, 9th, 10th and 13th.

Ballparking, it would probably take around $30M for them to jump up closer to 20th, or around $50M to crack into the teens.

Yeah, it's really low. If I was an Orioles fan, I'd be so bloody mad. They have all these cost-controlled players, a good team, and they sit on their pile of money and do nothing.
