Say what you want about Turner. but he would have looked pretty freaking sweeeeeet in our line-up.

I'm fine with no Turner in the end. He's barely playing any 3B at this stage of his career, and his offensive numbers could tank at any time. xWOBA and BB% down. K% up. Before we signed Rhys Hoskins my tune would have been different, but he just doesn't fit as well with this roster if we're going to have Yelich/Contreras taking up a significant % of DH ABs.

I was over at Gateway Redbirds, and learned that the Cardinals signed Matt Carpenter. I had not heard that. The natives are not pleased. They get him for the minimum and the Padres are paying the rest, but man, not a "needle mover."

Unrelated: Are we sure that Keston Hiura and Heston Kjerstad are not evil twins?

As January nears an end, here's where Free Agency stands in regards to remaining players available grouped by projected fWAR (according to https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/free-agent-tracker?&sign=unsigned):

  • 2.0+ proj. fWAR - 5 of 21 remain unsigned (incl. Snell, Montgomery, Chapman, Bellinger, and Rosario)
  • 1.5-1.9 proj. fWAR - 4 of 13 remain unsigned (incl. Soler, Ryu, Kershaw, and Anderson)
  • 1.0-1.4 proj. fWAR - 9 of 18 remain unsigned (incl. Clevinger, Lorenzen, German, Junis, Greinke, Urshela, Pham, Taylor, and Segura)
  • 0.5-0.9 proj. fWAR - 30 of 53 remain unsigned (incl. Merrifield, Santana, Hill, Longoria, Solano, Syndergaard, Profar, Donaldson, Odorizzi, JD Martinez, and others)

It'll be interesting to see where they all land!

One name that popped out at me while compiling that list that I hadn't considered was Donovan Solano. He played primarily 1B with the Twins last season (85 G, 64 GS), but also put in some time at 2B (28 G, 10 GS) and 3B (19 G, 13 GS).

I hadn't realized how consistent he's been on offense the past 5 seasons, putting up good OBP (.360, .365, .344, .339, and .369) and wRC+ (116, 125, 105, 100, and 116) numbers each year while also not having huge lefty/righty splits (a bit better against lefties from 2019-2022, and a little better against righties last year).

He could be an interesting piece to the puzzle for the right price.

Solano + Ryu would make me feel very comfortable heading into the season.

With Ryu the rotation would feel a lot more stable. 2021-23:

And Solano could mix and match in the 1B/2B/3B/DH slots nicely.

2021-23 vs. RHP:

Throw Black into the mix as well and I think we can find a combination of guys that fill out the infield nicely.

Yeah, not seeing the team adding another $15-20M in payroll. I think they will want to keep financial-flexibility intact for possible deadline moves.

If anything, I think we could possibly see trade/trades as the route to improve the team and or organization as a whole.

I would be shocked after signing Hoskins....but I had been advocating for Soler as DH/Santana as 1B most of this winter after Woodruff was nontendered.  Adding two RH thumpers to this everyday lineup would be fantastic (and quite possibly too expensive).

Soler makes alot of sense for the Cubs, too - we'll see what happens

"Jorge Soler, his market, I don't think, has picked up quite yet," said Murray. "I'm struggling to figure out where the fit is because you have the Diamondbacks who went in a different direction and got Joc Pederson. You have the Blue Jays now getting Justin Turner, I don't that would preclude them from going out and getting Soler, you never know there.

"I've also heard there's another team that's in on Soler, I don't necessarily know what team that is, but it's not surprising in the slightest there's outside interest in addition to the Diamondbacks and the Blue Jays there for Soler."

Whoa this guy really thinks they heard another team in on Soler after the 2 teams (it sounds they believed were a fit) signed other players?  Well no duh Sherlock, some team is in on Soler.

Just one of those conjectures that leaves them an out while likely knowing or hearing nothing suggesting whom.  Not what you want your readers to see you say. I have no idea.  Lead them on by "hearing" to bring the back on next article or posting.

Anyway.

Wily Peralta signs a minor league deal with Pittsburgh. Seen success as a RP for Det in 21&22.

Murray knows his stuff and has connections with the Brewers. If there is a mystery team with Murray it gives me some encouragement that it could be the Brewers.

I thought the same thing with Murray. Soler would be an awesome pickup for our lineup. Hoskins and Soler would add a ton of more power to a lineup that lacked it in 2023.

You mean to tell me that cheap Brewers owner paid $16M for Hoskins when he could have had Santana for $6M?
