Look for a third stint in Milwaukee to materialize in the coming days for free-agent left-hander Wade Miley.

Miley, 37, enjoys playing for the Brewers, and maintains a strong relationship with Pat Murphy, whom the team recently elevated from bench coach to manager.

The Brewers, likewise, are fond of Miley, who had a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts last season and is a leader in their clubhouse.

Do they just sign him for 10M now? 12?  He's not made over 10M in a single season for his career.  37age season coming up.  Would you pay him 15M while paying Burnes 15M projection?  Could you imagine 16M for Miley and Burnes under 16?

Either way; I like Miley for the purpose of winning a division. He's just what a team needs for your middle-late rotation.

Also if the Brewers aren't in the playoffs race around the trade deadline Miley will be a great trade candidate if healthy. Teams are always looking for experienced starting pitching that won't cost a ton

That would be nice to have Miley back. Would really buff up the rotation.

Burnes, Peralta, Miley, Houser, Rea, Gasser. That’s a solid six.

I’m hoping Carlos Rodriguez continues to develop. Perhaps he’ll be ready late in the season in case injuries or whatever hits the club.

Would love to have Wade back. Dependable vet that could help bridge the gap to the Gasser’s and Misiorowski’s of our system. Gonna guess around 8-10 million, unless they get a 2 year deal done.

I'd be very happy to have him back, but I'd be very hesitant to go North of $10M on him. FanGraph's Crowd Sourcing has him getting 1 yr / $8M (https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/free-agent-tracker?&pos=sp), which I would hope would be much closer to what we offer him.

I like Miley when he pitches, but at 37 there's a pretty strong chance he's going to spend a good chunk of 2024 on the IL. Oh well, I guess the cost of doing business in MLB is to pay a lot of pitchers to sit on the IL. It has gotten ridiculous.

If you want a good laugh look at Baseball Reference team pages for teams in the 1980's and before. Lots of teams used no more than 15 different pitchers for the season. Last season the Brewers used 34.

Love this if it happens!

Interesting thoughts but highly doubt Miley signs at 15-16 million. My guess is around 11 million but nothing more than a guess. I also think Burnes will be gone sometime this winter. I'm ok with that as we push our young player poker chips in.

He declined a $10M option, I don't see how this would be for under that.

That's exactly my thinking. Think I seen this is going to be just 1 year deal and not adding an option.  Give him 12-14M....or 10. Under and then just 1 year is taking one for the team from what he could have made.  Definitely feel better seeing that he's starting that next game than Rea-Houser-Anderson types. Hopefully Gasser gets a good long look being lefty with Miley passing on great insight and knowledge during Gasser's rookie games.

Probably right...but it is more than possible he misjudged his market and people actually don't want a late 30s injury prone starter with very unflashy stuff. He has never made more than $10mil in his career despite plenty of good years that were even more healthy than last year. Not to mention healthier and didn't follow up a year where he failed to start 10 games. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets exactly $10mil.

That being said, happy to have him back. Nice clubhouse guy and we have plenty of payroll space for him. We needed a veteran on staff. Just hope we can maybe get another one that is a bit more dependable health wise. Assuming Burnes is gone of course.

It's also very possible that he declined the option to protect himself just in case the Brewers ended up hiring a manager that he isn't fond of. Rosenthal notes that Miley is a fan of Murphy. Perhaps Murphy wasn't the done-deal we thought he was.

Could also be working something out with escalators. Something starting around $8M but could go up to $12-14M based on games started or innings pitched might be beneficial to both parties. Miley potentially gets more than the $10M he turned down, while the Brewers get a little insurance on an aging pitcher who has had years of only 16, 4, and 8 starts in the past 6 seasons.

The money for Miley

So basically $8.5 million guaranteed, plus another $2.5 million in incentives. He makes a little more than he would have with his original deal if he stays healthy and pitches well, and the Brewers save a bit if he doesn't. Not too bad all around.
