Best of luck to Joey……always enjoyed his personality

If anyone should get a HOF "bump" for personality and being (effectively) a one-team guy, it's Votto. He must have as close to universal appeal of any superstar.

I'm sure he'll get docked for the high-bar for HOF first baseman, but will anyone care if he got in? One MVP. His career wOBA of .394 would place him in this season's top-ten.  Obviously, his career totals aren't awesome.

I would care if he didn't get in. He was able to command the zone and get his hits. He's one of my favorite players to never play for the Brewers. I can see the case where someone says he's not "first ballot" but he should be in.

Todd Helton had 61.8 career WAR | 46.6 peak seven WAR over 9,453 PAs with a 131 OPS+.

Votto comes in at 64.5 career WAR | 46.9 peak seven WAR over 8,746 PAs with a 144 OPS+.

Took Helton six years to get in. Guessing Votto comes in around there, maybe a little shorter since he doesn't have Coors Field hanging over his head and as you note he has always been a writer & fan favorite.

This is just bizarre.

https://www.nj.com/yankees/2024/08/yankees-alex-verdugos-hitting-struggles-are-a-mystery-that-maybe-only-doctors-can-solve.html

Verdugo used the midseason break to decompress, but there was another reason he stayed in New York: a doctor’s appointment. After three seasons of sores and pain in his hands and fingers, Verdugo was tired of constantly wrapping his palms with gauze and knuckles with medical tape. And as much as he was convinced his hands weren’t the reason for his slumping, his statistics suggested something was wrong.

Bradley Blalock allowed two runs with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a win over the Yankees on Saturday.

Blalock was solid against the Yankees on Saturday, holding them to two runs into the sixth inning. He walked two batters in the third inning before Jazz Chisholm brought a run in on a double. Alex Verdugo took Blalock deep for a solo homer in the fourth. He pitched into the sixth, leaving with a runner on and one out at 96 pitches. The 23-year-old right-hander will take a 3.06 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and an 11/8 K/BB ratio across 17 2/3 innings into a start against the Rockies in Colorado on Thursday.

How many innings are the Pirates going to let Skenes throw this year?  He is currently at 108 innings pitched and only pitched about 135 innings last year between college and the minors.  He is only 27 innings or about 4-5 starts away from reaching the number of innings he pitched last year which should be about his last start in August or his first start in September.  If it takes him 5 starts that should put his innings match in September start 1.  He would then have about 3 more starts left in September and if he averages 6 innings pitched that puts him at about 150 innings pitched on the season.  Do the Pirates shut him down if they make the playoffs or stick him in the bullpen?

135...they should let him go 150-160 as long as he's throwing well, and maintaining his velo, but I'd be monitoring that closely. 20-30 inning jump, provided he maintains his stuff is within the norm.

I'd shut him down at 150 but...I'm also conservative.

I don't disagree with caution on guys, and obviously, Skenes' generational talent combined with the Pirates' record point to shutting him down.

With that said, if they were in it, I wouldn't fear overworking him one iota. He's built like a horse. He's just... different.

Former Brewers farmhand Bowden Francis is on quite the heater.

Last 3 starts: 22 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 27 K

Damn.

Heavy splitter usage though so we know this would have never happened in Milwaukee.

This is going to be weird but Jansen will be playing for two teams in one game on Monday well sort of.

BOSTON -- The start of Monday’s continuation of a suspended game between the Red Sox and Blue Jays will be history-making. Toronto’s Danny Jansen was at the plate on June 26 at Fenway...

Not just that but he will also be catching his own AB...kind of. The game ended with Jansen at the plate for Toronto. Obviously he will be pinch hit for, but still kind of funny to be catching the AB that you started as a hitter.

Yes... we had to post this...

It would be even better if he had a 2 strike count on him when play resumes and he was allowed to pitch. He could then officially strike himself out.

At least the Pirates have recognized this but I doubt the Reds will recognize that Elly De La Cruz should be shifted to the OF.  Elly De La Cruz defensively should be a better OF than he is at SS and the Reds OF is rather ugly.

Too bad a defensive move won't fix his awful offensive year...  I've had this bum on a fantasy team all season, and he has been garbage.

He has a 115 wRC+. How exactly is that garbag?

My take is based on a fantasy baseball perspective.  Dude is averaging 1.84 points per game.  There are guys sitting on our WW with better numbers and more points.  He's been a HUGE disappointment,

What were you expecting from him that he's been a huge disappointment considering he's having a career year.

ZiPS projected Cruz at .245 AVG | 70 R | 67 RBI | 19 HR | 15 SB

Oneil is currently at .265 AVG | 57 R | 63 RBI | 18 HR | 17 SB

He’s essentially hit all his marks with 32 games left and an extra 20 points of batting average.

Tough crowd.

Garbage!

I would take that garbage on the Brewers.

Again, I'm talking about from a fantasy baseball perspective.  Not trying to be sneaky, said it twice, now for the third time, my post is based on fantasy baseball.

Cruz is the #23 SS in my leagues.  Adames is #9.  It's a 12 team league, so I expected way more from him than the 23rd most points at the SS position.  Adames has 320 points, Cruz has 222.  Almost a 100 Point difference.

I stand by my original statements, from a fantasy baseball perspective, Cruz has been garbage.

I'm asking what were you expecting? He's striking out and walking around the same level as his career. Similar power output as the rest of his career. Stealing more bases than ever before. Seems like you're blaming a player for your bad fantasy GM'ing. Adames is a way better SS than Cruz, so not at all surprising that he'd be higher ranked.

Also if we want to get very technical, before you even mentioned fantasy you said he's been awful offensively this year which +12.1 above average offense according to fangraphs would like to push back on.
