I think Carlson is the kicker. I think he was always the kicker unless someone else went nuclear in pre-season and that didn't happen.

I don’t see him getting cut. The stuck with all last year and Joseph isn’t any better.

30-35 yard FGs should be a gimme.

NFL kickers these days are just too good to employ a guy who regularly makes 30-35 yard kicks look like an adventure.

The 2 largest question marks aren’t really answered. I hope the go elsewhere for backup qb. If they don’t, it should be Pratt. I think it’s likely Carlson but if they pivot this week and trade for someone before they get cut or claim one I wouldn’t be upset.

It’s very possible that they trade for one before the deadline or claim one. I just don’t think Joseph is better.

His miss was shorter than an XP

He missed several of those last year

I believe Carlson would clear waivers & land on practice squad

You can't miss 30ish yard field goals by a mile in perfect weather conditions.

Carlson's XP % last season (Extra Point!!) would have placed 14th amongst active kickers with 20 or more attempts if we simply considered them actual field goals. THAT is insanity. This is why I've been so vocal about Carlson and the FG kicking unit as an entity. Everything ST was supposed to improve measurably with Bisaccia who was promoted to assistant HC. All we've seen is a very sub-par ST unit as a whole and a hand-selected kicker who is one of the worst kickers in the NFL. It's a total quagmire.

Indeed. AND, yet Carlson has been missing XP's like they are giveaways. HOWEVER, it is important to note: he was 14-of-14 between 30-39 yards last season. His FG issues were largely that 40-48 yard zone. OR, maybe he's just an insanely erratic kicker and has been since he kicked in college. There is also that. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck...you know the rest.

When Carlson was draft myself and many here questioned based on when they took him and who was available at that point. If they move on, great. I wish they brought in better competition Greg Joseph for him.

One think I hadn't considered until now, however, is Anders has never missed a FG in Brazil. Perhaps, he is our Portuguese 'Man of War'?!?

I don't think Joseph is anything to write home about, but Carlson was not good last year and today missed a 34 yard field goal in 75 degree weather with no wind. By a lot. When he's kicking for his job. If he makes the team, he'll be good for two losses this season.

Bowden might be a good long snapper, but he is very small for an NFL body.  I do hope all other LS are being reviewed for cuts as several of Carlson's misses (and a few of his makes) had poor snaps.

Out of curiosity, I thought I'd rate Carlson's misses last year.  He had 13 misses (6XPs, 7 FGs) last year including the playoffs.

I rated a bad snap as anything where the holder had to go above his head, twist his body 90 degrees (i.e. shoulders parallel to the yard marker) or below knee level. Here is how Carlson's misses rated:

  • 7 were solely on Carlson
  • 1 was blocked
  • 1 was over 60 yards (I wouldn't hold that against anyone)
  • 4 were bad snaps - including the playoff FG against the 49ers
    • 1 was over the holder's head - arms fully extended to catch it.
    • 2 were behind the holder
    • 1 was behind and low

Now of course all kickers have to deal with these things, so it is still hard to compare.  But it satisfies my curiosity on the snapper's portion of the problem - about 25%

I said it all of last season. Orzech is not it. Inaccurate, as you have demonstrated, and also slow snaps sometimes. As a LS, after a punt you basically have the field clear to run, yet he never makes plays.

We need someone new.

Heinicke will probably be available.

Tannehill has said he'll only sign if the situation is perfect. Not sure what that means to him.

Yeah, I don't care about the size of a LS. Bowden is pretty athletic and he's...what, 225? You can't line up over the LSer...it's minimal impact.

I'd even trade for one at this point. A bad team that may value a 7th.

I didn't see the missed kick, but it just seems so consistent with Carlson. From longer away, the freer he kicks and in rhythm, he is good. The shorter or a poor snap and he appears to be aiming them.

Remember the talk about teaching someone else to snap so yu could save a spot on the 53 man? I think Bellichick thought about it...there's a reason it hasn't materialized. I thought(and still hope) Carlson can be the guy as he has such a big leg, but can't be missing easy kicks.

Actually, I think Joseph has a much bigger leg than Carlson. He’s made a 61 yard FG in an NFL game. Carlson’s longest is 57 yards. However, I agree with most everyone on this site that % made FG is most important and they should see what else is available before game 1.

I think it's pretty obvious Carlson has a stronger leg...but it really doesn't matter if they're not consistent from 30-40.

We had a deep draft last year and have a pretty deep team overall. It's the perfect time right now to trade some late picks and shore up some big holes on the team.

Yes. We had two really deep drafts the last two years. This draft class was not as focused on premium positions or value, it was more about targeting positions and rounding out the team. So if you're going to do that, you're trying to compete...and you might as well just go and get the LS/Punter you need to do that.

I think Wheelan is actually turning into a really good punter, but it's about the holding. Too bad thi is still an issue. I'd also expect Det to claim the best kicker available, so at least we're ahead of them...I think.

Pretty obvious huh? LOL. The quote below is from an article published in the Journal/Sentinel on Monday, August 26 by Pete Dougherty and Eric Baranczyk. Next time I’ll take your definitive player opinions with a grain of salt.

In any event, the truth is there’s minimal difference between the two. The call here would be Joseph, who has the slightly stronger leg…
