I'm talking myself off the ledge a bit with our kicking situation....

  • Last year, Carlson and Joseph were 2 missed FG away from being in the Daniel Carlson or Justin Tucker range.
  • Carlson was good under 40 yards (100%) and over 50 yards (60%), but oddly struggled from 40-49 (50%) and XPs (87%)
  • Mason Crosby averaged 75-79% in his first 4 years, so Carlson is above that already.

Same here. I'm not confused as to why they let Peter Bowden go(indicating the LS job had been won) and then re-signed him.

I really think if it was just the FGs, we'd be a bit more...discerning. IIRC, he tried a 63 and 65 yard FG last year, end of the half. A couple off the uprights and then a couple of shaky holds.

I feel pretty good about where this team is at overall and hope we can finally get all this cleared up this year. Also throw in Daniel Carlson's 81% and Anders was the best of the bunch as a rookie.

I'm only looking out at the ledge when I'm looking at ONE area....that soft middle of the OL. Otherwise, I think we're pretty talented. The preseason results seem to take on added meaning when you're expecting a big jump in expectation though.

Bowden might be a good long snapper, but he is very small for an NFL body.  I do hope all other LS are being reviewed for cuts as several of Carlson's misses (and a few of his makes) had poor snaps.

Out of curiosity, I thought I'd rate Carlson's misses last year.  He had 13 misses (6XPs, 7 FGs) last year including the playoffs.

I rated a bad snap as anything where the holder had to go above his head, twist his body 90 degrees (i.e. shoulders parallel to the yard marker) or below knee level. Here is how Carlson's misses rated:

  • 7 were solely on Carlson
  • 1 was blocked
  • 1 was over 60 yards (I wouldn't hold that against anyone)
  • 4 were bad snaps - including the playoff FG against the 49ers
    • 1 was over the holder's head - arms fully extended to catch it.
    • 2 were behind the holder
    • 1 was behind and low

Now of course all kickers have to deal with these things, so it is still hard to compare.  But it satisfies my curiosity on the snapper's portion of the problem - about 25%

Aren't they also attempting a higher % from 50+ in camp than during the regular season?  As previously mentioned, they are also simulating running onto the field with no timeouts left to get a kick up in time.

It would be nice if the media separated those out, but that doesn't garner as many clicks.

They are. Take the Family Night. They ran the FG team on, they were attempting from 57(They moved it back about 20 yards in order to do this) and then Carlson kicked and MLF "iced" him. He drilled that one, missed the next one and then Joseph mixed the next one.

The confidence in him was really up and down last year. Struggled in the pre-season, was really good the first couple months, then had a poor November where he missed 6 of his kicks when we went 3-1, then finished the regular season pretty strong, but had the post-season missed PAT and FG vs SF.

He looks really good when the timing is right and there's no hitch in his approach...and he can kick it a mile. But when that gets thrown off, it looks like when a QB short arms it. Looks like he's aiming it and not just letting it go and then he misses.

I hope he figures it out here as I think he'll become a really good kicker and if it's not here, it'll be somewhere else like his brother.

Kenneth was truly such a likable young man. Hopefully, he can find his way in whatever endeavor(s) is/are next.

Well that sucks. I thought he was developing...slowly of course, into a viable NFL Prospect.

It is interesting for Hale though. I didn't realize they could just do that with anyone born outside the US. I thought it was only through that special assignment process in the offseason.

Kind of shows their hand in what they will do with him after the cuts though...and maybe why he has lasted this long as a third kicker.  PS target all the way.

Well, that's the thing. I am unsure if you understand (if you do, apologies in advance) that the International Player Pathway program allows the Packers to automatically carry him the entire season as an allocated 17 PS member. In other words, he is on the team because of the IPP and he doesn't need to change his status. They still have 16 open spots on the PS.

Yep, that was what I meant.  They still need to waive him and resign him, but it doesn't take up a normal spot.  Sounds like the NYG are doing the same thing with an international kicker.

Yeah, I didn't know that either.

Is the only requirement to just not be American born?

No, he's always outside of it. And the left.

Yikes - I should have typed LEFT

When he makes kicks - he’s generally just inside the left upright 😏

I think Carlson is the kicker. I think he was always the kicker unless someone else went nuclear in pre-season and that didn't happen.

I think you've got to cut Clifford. He's just not someone you could ever really put into a regular season NFL game and feel like you've got any shot.

He’s a great practice squad QB

Not sure Pratt is either. They should sign a vet. Did Tannehill retire?
