Garrett Mitchell can stop taking strike three any time now. Really would love to see him dropped in the order. I don't like him like some of you do.

I like his upside well enough, but his ABs make him look like a mental midget who isn't a student of the game.

You're in a run producing spot in the lineup and you have a chance to drive in runs and you're caught guessing. Over and over and over again. Know the situation and swing the bat.

Mitchell .232 / Sanchez and Hoskins the same. So they must be brutal also and sit, Adamas not to far behind.

It honestly isn't even about his overall numbers. It's not that I don't think he can be a good hitter. It's a lot of low IQ at-bats where he just needs to put the ball in play to score runs and he doesn't seem to understand the situation and it costs us.

Sure I'd be frustrated if these K's were swinging instead of looking, but I wouldn't be accusing him of bad mental baseball.

I think I read the other day that league average OPS is around .715.  Sanchez is around .735 and Mitchell is around .685.  I know which one I'm taking over the other in terms of offensive production.  Couldn't care less about batting average.

I commented after last night’s game that I was concerned about the “black holes” in the lineup (Mitchell, Black and, to a slightly lesser extent, Frelick).

I think there were at least two times yesterday that Mitchell and Black failed with a runner on third and less than 2 out, and then Mitchell killed another scoring chance already today.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

That 2-0 pitch to Frelick was a called strike. Not sure why the broadcast guys didn't even mention it much less call out how brutal it was.

The righty / lefty stuff adds up to be about one extra hit every game according to stats.  Only big if in the perfectly right spot.

The problem is, without Yelich we don't have any good left handed hitters, and we're putting the majority of them near the top of the order where they get the most ABs.

Someone who understands this stuff better than me please answer this: why does the catcher always get the credit/blame for calling a good/bad game, when the pitcher can just shake them off until he gets the pitch he wants anyway?

For this discussion the first thing that probably needs to happen is not have Turang in leadoff and then see how it affects the avoiding back to back lefties from there.    The question after that is whether to have Chourio lead off or if you want him at 2/3 instead due to how good he's gotten.

Hit him leadoff and let him cook.

Ortiz

Chourio

Contreras

Adames

Mitchell/Perkins

Hoskins

Turang

Haase/Sanchez/Perkins

Frelick

Seems fine to me. Or swap Chourio/Ortiz.

OPS doesn't make sense to me that you could add together two fractions with completely different denominators (plate appearances and at bats) and arrive at anything truly meaningful.

It also seems like OPS over-counts singles. If you do nothing but hit singles, your OPS would be 2.000. If you do nothing but hit doubles, your OPS would be 3.000 and only triples would be 4.000. So only triples is only considered twice as good as only singles? That doesn't sound reasonable to me.

The Brewers must be one of the only teams in MLB that faces Mikolas and is content trying to get into the bullpen. He’s now thrown 8 straight scoreless innings against the Brewers going back to his start in May.

That game in May still annoys me. Mikolas was over 40 pitches in the 1st and was probably 1 batter away from being knocked out of the game and Lane windmilled at 3B leading to an out at home. Mikolas then proceeded to throw 6 innings in the game.

That's the beauty of wOBA. It assigns an actual value for each batting event in the context of the season and weights them all correctly.

Is there anyone who understands why Ortiz is hitting 9th? Anyone?

Ortiz has struggled this year against 4-seams and sinkers, while primarily doing damage on changeups and curveballs. Mikolas is right-handed and throws mostly 4-seams, sliders, and sinkers. Turang on the other hand, has done best against 4-seams, sinkers, and sliders, while struggling against curves and changeups, the two pitches he's less likely to see.

That's an explanation for today's lineup, though. Not every game.

Good answer, we could be in 1st place by 30 games and the same people every single game would complain about Murphy and his terrible lineups. It gets old.

I said this in yesterday's GT, but one can think Murphy does a good job in general and still openly disagree with some things he does. It's not wrong to state dissenting opinions.

Plenty of folks would assemble this lineup differently.
