Words truly can not describe how happy this makes me. Collins is definitively a 'my guy' kind of thang for this ol' codger. I've been touting his wares in my reports since last May. He's only gotten better, more consistent, more versatile. He hits anyone - both sides of the dish he is in the mid 0.800's OPS. Switch-hit versatility. Can play 3B, 2B, CF, LF and play acceptable defense. His bat and his offensive prowess, however, are what set him apart. He did have an OF assist to 3B this year that absolutely caught me by surprise (from LF) - he has a better arm than I gave him credit for. It's not 'Wow' but it won't kill you from the outfield grass and it is more than fine at 3B. Line drive gap power. Has developed HR pop. Has a very very good eye at the dish and knows how to fight off pitches. I've been calling for the need, organizationally, to ensure he doesn't get nabbed in the Rule 5 draft. He just offers so much as a Utility guy.

Today is a GOOD day!!!

Impossible. No way would we give on Hicklen after just a few games.

I understand the sarcasm……to be fair I wouldn’t say they gave up on him……he didn’t get dfa……but for this season they obviously have.

The fringe guys have to produce , not going to be given a long leash. Brewers may never get a big league hit. Collins is more versatile and could stick as a guy that can go back and forth between the majors and.minors.

He's been quite consistent all year.  Little down month in July.  Thing with Hicklen for me was I just didn't like calling up a guy who had completely lost it the previous month.  Probably going to only play against LHP, but cool to see a switch hitter with such miniscule splits.

Yeah I understand. I brought this up in the GT a few days ago where a few of us were saying Hicklen needed to go and were told we were giving up on him way too fast. So it was just a tongue in cheek response.

Sounds like a much better option than Monasterio for a playoff utility guy

They like a bench guy that can play SS, even though Turang & Ortiz can slide over. That's what keeps Mona here, and what brought Capra here when they were short-handed. Collins still would have a shot due to keeping fewer pitchers in the post-season, which I believe is still a thing.

I was a proponent of Collins over Charles Hicklen all along, even though you knew Hicklen would get 1st crack when he was added to the 40. The versatility, close splits & combining a nice OBP w/a little pop is what does it for me. And as you mentioned, Hicklen was mostly coming here cold.

Collins was not on the 40 man roster by Sept 1st, so not eligible for playoff roster (except under special circumstances.

This is not accurate. If you are in the organization on 9/1 you are playoff eligible. The circumstances do not need to be special.

The Official Site of Major League Baseball

According to MLB's website, he is correct.

This is the part that’s important:

“A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible.”

This is a widely misunderstood rule that confuses people every year. I’m not sure why MLB doesn’t clarify it. Just last year, the Diamondbacks didn’t add Jordan Lawlar to their 40-man roster until September 6th, and then he was on their Wild Card roster vs. the Brewers. All you have to do is “replace” someone who has been on the IL. So the Brewers could just “replace” Oliver Dunn.

Long story short: if the Brewers want Isaac Collins on a postseason roster, he will be on it

Yeah every year there’s a handful of players who fit this scenario.

In addition to your example there was Josh Donaldson for us, Orion Kerkering for the Phillies, Junior Caminero for Tampa. All 3 of those guys weren’t on the 40-man roster until after 9/1

Seems like a good utility guy for the future.

If he proves he can hit then he'll find a way in the lineup.
