It may add to his trade value but it seems like this will leave a bad taste for others who are considering joining the club.

It definitely does, clear sign they're setting him up for a trade and sign deal

Yeah you probably don’t do this if you don’t plan to trade him. Moving him is the smart move. He has been great but they won’t resign him so see what you can get

Adding some details as I was a bit confused by what this meant to the Brewers:

  • Brewer's bought out a club option of $10.5M by paying Williams $250k
  • Williams is eligible for arbitration estimated to be $7.7-9M

No real changes to our control on Williams, just looking to save $1-2M.  Not really shocking knowing the options the Brewers had.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

To refresh peoples memories of why they had the team option in the first place. The Brewers and Williams were heading towards arbitration last year. Since they missed the original deadline to avoid the hearing the only way for them to not have the hearing was for the Brewers to give him a multi year deal. Brewers will probably trade Williams but I personally believe it won't have anything to do with player sourness towards the Brewers not picking up the option.

If anybody deserves less in the arby years, I mean anybody ever ever ever, it is Williams for the hotel punch when it mattered and also the blowing of the clincher vs the Mets.   This is not the same as Burnes in my mind.

Really?

I have a hard time believing that any team ever, anywhere, would voluntarily pay a guy more money out of good will --- unless it was part of a longer-term contract negotiation.

now the brewers will (most likely) have to go to arbitration with him and state all of the reasons brewers shouldn't pay him what he wants. I agree you don't pay players more than you have to, but saving 1.5 million for the best closer in baseball doesn't seem worth it ( I know, its not my money, but still)

Don't other teams do this kinda stuff all the time as well? This is just normal day to day GM stuff in modern baseball small markets, no?

I can’t imagine Rhys Hoskins feeling bad about exercising his contractual player option to maximize his benefit. Nor should Milwaukee feel bad about declining their contractual option on Williams.

The arbitration process isn't perfect but the players voted to keep it in the last CBA. I think ultimately they do see a benefit there and favored it over the alternative choice offered by the owners. It's not ideal but it does work and is pretty close to fair for most players.

The owners are pretty much on record saying they don't love arbitration either. I think both sides are going to continue exploring ways to improve or come up with something better, naturally it comes down to finding common ground in negotiations.

It's not going to happen but I'm fairly confident that if the Brewers made an offer to Corbin Burnes in free agency this offseason and it was the best offer for the most years and money, an offer that met his expectations and more, he wouldn't hesitate to accept it. All the bad feelings go away once a guy cashes in big in free agency.

1.5 million is not pocket change……especially to small market teams.

There is virtually no chance they extend him so you hope he doesn’t get mad but it’s not like they are being unfair with him…….he will get a. number that both sides agree on or an arbiter will decide…….either way it’s just business……he will get paid well no matter what happens.
