With this leaking before the pick, is there any chance the Brewers could be working on trading Smith instead of allowing him to be selected? If he’s going 1st overall in the Rule 5, you’d have to think they could get greater than the $100k they’d get from the White Sox in a trade, especially given that the acquiring team then doesn’t have to have him in the majors for the full season.

Based off of Rule 5 history the likelihood is high he gets returned to us at some point this year. A non top 30 prospect ... I get the annoyance of losing him but my guess is we are simply loaning him to someone else to use for a few months for $50k.

normally. But what does the white sox have to lose to waste a roster spot on him. This is like Wei- Chung Wang all over again just wasting a spot in the brewers pen in 14.

I would like to Believe in the Brewers Brain trust on why they Expose him especially as the brewers need to put premium on cheap affordable pitching.

kind of my thoughts, I'd trust hook and the brewers brain trust over whoever is evaluating pitchers for the white sox.

Jonathan Mayo reporting the White Sox will take Shane Smith with the 1st pick.

That'll help his career.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

The Brewers have made plenty of pitcher mistakes in the past. It still kills me that Reese Olson is in Detroit.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

seems worth the low risk of a rule v pick. he wouldn't be the first guy to figure things out in his mid 20's. Also brewers can see what they can do in the lab. It would be more interesting to see why the cards didn't protect him, since they are very good at developing pitchers as well.

So the Brewers view Thomas as better than Smith?

Probably more of a question of who is more likely to help the big league team in 2025. Thomas already has 400+ innings at AAA. A guy they can theoretically use in the Bryce Wilson role.

This isn't directed at anyone, just thought it was a good time for the yearly reminder that the Brewers are always a late offseason team and I'm sure the Winter Meetings included many discussions that will lead to upcoming transactions.
