Depending on roster construction, I’d be ok if he Didn’t play much other than a pinch runner/defensive replacement for Hoskins. But I hope he isn’t a progress stopper for Black in MIL or even Martinez/Clarke at AAA. I hope he never ever is a DH again because a bad hitter is a waste of a DH

1. With Martinez and Clarke in triple-A, I am guessing this is a make the roster or opt out situation.

2. I really wonder if Black isn’t going start the season in the Nashville outfield.

I see little upside with Bauers, so if he makes the team that means Black failed in spring training.  Always good to have depth but I'm not looking forward to another Bauers/Hoskins.  Hopefully, Bauers ends up getting an opt out because we dont need him 😉

I made thoughts known on the news article, but I just want to add the hopefully nothing gets determined in Spring Training.  Bad decisions are made that way (see Luke Voit).

Why would the Brewers clear the decks for Tyler Black anyways? He was outhit in AAA by several journeyman minor leaguers.

I get it he’s a bonus baby and they have some cash invested, but nothing about Black screams difference maker.

Bauer isn’t anything either but had a nice year as a pinch hitter for the Brewers last season.

I agree 100% I am hopeful that Bauers never sees the ML level at least with the Brewers but if Black can’t beat out Bauers then he needs to be in AAA or traded. I am not high on either of them as Bauers offers very little if anything at all and Black is a AAAA player to me.. I hope I am wrong and with more consistent playing time he can become a great addition to the team.

Came in here hoping your phone just autocorrected an S at the end of Bauer and this thread was for Trevor Bauer. No such luck.

Maybe it’s because he wasn’t a desirable teammate, too?

Yes, he'd probably be ok numbers-wise. And there was a time teams would employ him despite the known locker room cancer reputation. But that was back when he was putting up Cy Young-level numbers.  He's simply not that pitcher anymore, and teams aren't willing to put up with his dickishness in return for what he'd provide.

Gross.

I'd like to get to the point where we learn from past mistakes and move on.  This guy is trash.  I'd much rather an opportunity goes to someone like Clarke or Martinez Jr. than to try to rehash a guy who has never been any good.

Best case scenario is that he has a post-ST opt out (or very early in the season).  If we have injuries out of ST (or really poor performance), we have a backup-backup plan.

But he doesn't stay at AAA long and steal ABs from our younger players.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Bauers is 29 years old, and has 579 games at the MLB level with 1744 plate appearances. During that time, he's posted an 84 wRC+.

The only way to stay in the majors with that bat should be by playing excellent defense at a position like catcher, shortstop or center field. Instead, he is a below average corner OF / roughly average defensive 1B.

This is a minor league deal. Let's hope it doesn't go any further than that.

What worries me is this:

Now that we have him signed, we could easily say we have our back-up covered, and stop looking for better options, or, every better option that does comes along, and we don't get, just allows the front office to say "but we have Bauers, so no big deal."

This guy is a complete waste of a roster space.  He had a year here to figure things out, he didn't, so why are we messing around with him?  At all?

The problem is, unless someone else is available in a trade at a reasonable price, the options are pretty much uniformly bad if they want a lefty complement to Hoskins. Your possibilities:

1. Free agents: You best hope is probably that Rizzo 1) Will accept a small contract and part-time role and 2) Isn't completely washed.

2. Black plays a palatable level of defense.

3. Martinez is able to make the jump from AA.

Options 2 and 3 are still available to them. The free agent market for lefty first basemen is just bad. The other names are Joey Gallo, Matt Carpenter, Rowdy Tellez and Gavin Sheets. It's not unreasonable to look at that list and think, well, the devil you know ...

I can’t fathom option 2 and 3 not being an improvement if the team would ride one of them through the season.   I hope Bauers is viewed as AAA depth and not the front runner for the 26th man roster spot.   The deal hopefully is worded such that he will play aaa and be called up when needed.(knowing he will).
