WC had under 3 bwar this season and his offensive numbers have gone down. Let that sink in before we throw a large % of our payroll to him

In 2025 Contreras played through the busted up finger which surely impacted his offensive numbers, and this year he went into an almost two month funk that lined up pretty well with the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela which dragged down his seasonal line considerably...

Thru June 23rd
318 PA of 113 wRC+

June 24th thru August 19th
191 PA of 72 wRC+

August 20th to end of Regular Season
131 PA of 152 wRC+

Postseason
58 PA of 185 wRC+

Chourio had a similar progression at 200 PA of 137 wRC+ thru June 23rd, 242 PA of 103 wRC+ from June 24th thru August 25th, then 131 PA of 167 wRC+ thru the end of the regular season.

Pretty sure that BRef does not award credit to catchers for pitch framing in their WAR calculations either. For his four years with the Brewers BRef has him at -1 FLD and 15.3 WAR versus +15.2 FLD and 18.0 WAR at FanGraphs.

I'd also imagine on account of the various intangibles (managing the staff, clubhouse leadership) that the team values him more highly than publicly available WAR numbers.

Cal Raleigh signed for 6/$105M when he was still three years from FA.

Contreras isn't signing for less than that when he is only one year away from FA (& coming off World Series MVP).

Would think the bare minimum is topping the 5/$115.5M that Realmuto signed for back in 2021.

When all the excitement is done next year and they are sitting at conference table, the main topic of conversation will be money. That's why, unfortunately, I don't think it's realistic for fans to think Contreras is our long term solution to catcher. The good news is that there is always a possibility that we can get better with a great trade.

I don’t think we trade Mitchell this offseason………he has 2 years of Arby’s left and won’t be that expensive.

i like Lara but I’m not ready to hand him the starting cf job just yet.

Then again temper your expectations of what you get in today’s game for a veteran player with one season of control.

Look no further than Freddy Peralta (the most valuable commodity a starting pitcher). Time will tell on Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat, but the immediate impact from the players they got for Peralta has been next to nothing.

Assuming the season starts on time( I know a big if)……..what do we think this world championship does for attendance next season? I mean I’m think 3 million is a real possibility……..

Well fwar has him at 3.0 so not much better. I just think there is a lot of recency bias going on here.

What do you do when he gets injured next year? I say sell high.

Mentioned in another thread but he was the healhiest of our top 5 outfielders last year. We will need them all

What do you do if he doesn't get injured next year?  He was fine all year.

He had fluke injuries……..by that logic we should trade Miz now because he could get hurt next season or the year after…….think about how much they could get for him!

I think it would be cool to get back to 3m. Maybe they get an added boost early in the season with the excitement coming off the World Series. That’s really where they can make up attendance since they’re generally really well attended in the summer.

maybe a few more season ticket packages get sold with people wanting better access to playoff tickets for next year after they saw how expensive it was to buy secondary market World Series tickets (not going to lie, I’ve thought about getting a 20 game pack which I haven’t had since 2019. Just hard for me to put them to use with 2 kids under 3 and living 2ish hours away)

Not a perfect one to one comparison (few are) but the situation I keep coming back to with regards to Contreras is how the 2021 Braves handled Freeman after winning the World Series.

They did the "smart" thing and let the Dodgers pay for his "decline" years while trading for Matt Olson to take his place.

It kinda worked too, the Braves have won the 3rd most regular season games in MLB since 2022 and Olson has been the 2nd best 1B in MLB since 2022 with 3526 PA of 132 wRC+ for 21.1 WAR.

Of course, Freeman has been the best 1B in MLB since 2022 with 3360 PA of 143 wRC+ for 24.8 WAR, helping the Dodgers to two World Series wins (& picking up a WS MVP of his own along the way).

Meanwhile, for all their regular season success, the Braves have followed up their WS win with a 5 W - 12 L postseason record.

The numerical production might be able to be nearly replicated somehow, but replacing the kind of gravitas that Freeman/Contreras bring to an organization is a much more difficult proposition.

They literally have that guy already on the roster in Quinn Priester, who is expected to be full-go for Spring Training. Don't forget how great that guy was in 2025. He wasn't a fluke, either. Guy has legit TOR-type stuff.

I don't know.. personally I think Priester will never have the success again he had in 2025. Just seemed like a career year for him.

First candidate for rotation?  How about Ashby?  Injuries took him down.  He’s clearly back with a starters mix of pitches.  He’s a huge weapon in the pen.  But could be TOR.

1.  Miz

2.  Ashby

3.  Henderson

4.  Gasser

5.  Priester

6.  Harrison

Pen:

Megill

Uribe

Hall (2 inning guy)

Patrick (2 inning guy)

Drohan (2 inning guy)

Romero!  (Would love to have him back)

Final pen spot is rotation of guys with options like Gordon, Anderson, Crow, Sproat

not a fan of Ashby going to the rotation. He's fine in the role he's in now. Dominant, actually. But his lack of command could be an issue in the starting rotation.

Okay, so I think we'll have most of the players from last year but hey why not throw in a couple of FA's!! But question though, if there is a lock out how is that going to work for Free Agency? Yes I know it starts pretty much today but if there is going to be a salary cap/floor is that going to take effect this year? If there actually is a season and starts on time that is

If any kind of cap/floor situation is agreed upon it would most likely be slow rolled over a few seasons to give teams some time to adjust.

Brewers are in a crazy good position to pick out good arms at AA and AAA and offer our backups to get them. Hamilton, Ortiz, Vaughn, should get tons of looks by other teams. Largely, we have no need to move them….so it’s a good spot to be in.

No clue how aggressive they will be in November, though…..

We can not forget to factor in Rule 5 eligible players.  Some very hard choices coming up.  We may have to trade players like Hamilton, Vaughn and a couple of borderline guys in order to protect the guys we want to keep.  Arnold has his hand more than full over the last few weeks.  I'm not WAY into the minors like some of you guys but there are some names that I'm sure we'd want to get on the 40 man roster.  Who gets protected and who gets jettisoned?

On brewer fanatic podcast a few days ago Spencer said he thinks most likely guys to have interest from Brewers or other teams are L. Adams, J. Williams, T. Kuehner, C. Wagoner, R. Birchard, M. Wood, W. Torres I believe unless I’m missing anyone.

Of those I think good bets to be actually protected imo are Adams, Jett, Wagoner
