  1. I don't want to sound sexist, but this would probably be even harder to explain to a daughter than to a son.
  2. I get offers like that too, but with the Devil Rays. I've never purchased anything, including tickets to a game, or registered anywhere that would indicate I'm a Tampa fan.
  3. Even Elijah Dukes wouldn't be able to find words tender and delicate enough to explain this to his sons.
  4. Kotsay as a sub this year : 47 PA .298 OBP .238 SLG. .367/.438 in 246 career PA.
  5. ...and now is when I go off on MLB's blackout rules again. Stupid blackout rules, forcing me to miss Brewers games when they play a team from 4 hours away. Why do they have to keep playing the Astros on weekends when I'm Jonesing for baseball? Can't those all just be their 3:00 weekday games?
  6. I prefer a woman who likes my team, but isn't hardcore. This ensures that heated and pointless Betancourt arguments will never cross into my living room.
  7. Training is rarely the problem in safety violations like this: people will know they "oughta" do things right, but they don't. The clinic needs to devise an effective sampling system for spot-checks which are tied to some meaningful consequence (annual raise, termination, etc). Simple scorecards can bring about big safety improvements in industrial settings when management follows through properly.
  8. Further proof that every city should have a decent rail system. Even with the modest system in Minneapolis, I could leave my car at a friend's house, walk a few blocks to a station, and then be whisked away to a game with no need to park, and no need to worry about staying under a .08 BAC. Now that I'm back in Texas, I rarely go to Rangers games, primarily because of the heat, but also because of the pain in my butt elicited by parking and traffic. The mark of an advanced society is the availability of the simple, unadulterated pleasures of a baseball game and a High Life buzz.
  9. In 37 more innings, Atlanta (3.34 ERA) has allowed 59 more runs than Philly (3.05 ERA) while scoring 46 less. Atlanta's pitching is top-notch, but not as good as the Phillies. Especially when you consider that Halladay and Lee average over 7 IP per start and render bullpen differences less meaningful, I'd much rather take my chances with Atlanta.
  10. Winning GMs and managers tend to become conservative and complacent, because they don't want to mess with the things that brought them success. They forget that part of their success has to do with luck and winning in spite of their holes. It seems to be the baseball analog of the prevent defense in football. Guys suddenly become too timid to trust the same defense that held firm for 3.5 quarters to continue to be a wall, so they'd rather just slow the opponent down as they move down the field. I've never agreed with it in football, and don't agree with it here, either.
  11. but how much has "wanting to win" really EVER factored into free agent decisions? It seemingly did for LeBron James, and then everyone hated him and said he was the devil for leaving Cleveland.
  12. My clearest memory of Flanagan is having his "Baseball Talk" card as a kid and the story he told about how he had a deal with Mizuno and they spelled his name "Franagan" on his glove. http://wfmu.org/MACrec/images/SPTALK1.jpg
  13. That's part of why I own parrots - they have a decent shot of living until I'm either dead or senile.
  14. They haven't been the California Angels since 1996. I still call them that, and I still call Tampa "The Devil Rays". When teams stay in the same city, or same stadium, I refuse to use the new team or stadium name when they change it.
  15. I've thought he looks pretty acceptable behind the plate, but his arm is not impressive. Still, I'll give up a handful of extra steals in exchange for not producing 3 automatic outs per night.
  16. There's also wide belief that Mountain Dew will make your manhood smaller, menthol cigarettes contain fiberglass, and chiropractic adjustments cure viral infections. The degree of "dependence" one can have for marijuana is nothing at all similar to dependence on common drugs of abuse. Evidence of it being some life-ruining addiction are anecdotal and not backed by rigorous science. Withdrawal from "hard" drugs and drinking can kill you (alcohol is one of the most fatal withdrawals), or at least make you wish you were dying. I'm not saying pot use is like having hankerings for Taco Bell, but it's much closer to smoking cigarettes than snorting coke. What else is Jeffress supposed to say to save face after a third failed test? "I had no biological need to do it, but I like it a lot and I just thought I could keep getting away with it"?
  17. wow, people were much more supportive of Jeffress and he had a huge problem with a more worrisome drug. The defense of Jeffress seemed more in response to some who acted like he was a meth addict, when marijuana is not anything like "hard" drugs. Without knowledge of what Rogers tested positive for, it can't be said that it's less worrisome than pot. Many stimulants can cause heart problems; pot causes you to act like a moron. IMO, Rogers' problem, like Jeffress' is stupidity and not drugs. To know you're going to be tested and can get in huge trouble, all over a drug you likely are not physically dependent upon is moronic.
  18. Hey, at least you're in Houston and don't get blacked out of games against the Astros. I'm in Fort Worth and am in Houston's "home territory" despite being 20 minutes from the Rangers. I also got Cubs-Cards today, which cheezed me off something fierce. Fierce enough to spell "cheeze" with a "z" at least.
  19. I'd love to keep Hairston to fill the Counsell-sized void in our roster. We're moving on at SS, 3B is a huge question mark, and Rickie, Morgan, and Gomez' all-out play will probably cost them some time again.
  20. In his defense, he at least has the OPS of the beast for the season, even if it's not "beast" in the Prince Fielder sense.
  21. Our employers apparently took care of it beautifully. In 2009, I think we each got about a hundred bucks back. Last year, they adjusted our withholding after we got married in July, we got a refund of $98.
  22. When people pronounce an "ls" sound as "lts". "We need to fix this or elts we're gonna have problems", Cards TV announcer calling Pujols "Albert Puholts".
  23. Sthervin Matos: Can I get a pronunciation guide please? I'd guess s-thair-veen, with the "s" being short as in "Steve".
  24. I'm a Sony guy, and a decent one can be had for $550. Tech guys will bemoan their use of proprietary parts, but I never upgrade my computers, as I'm going to want a new one with better features in 3 years anyway. My Vaios have been really reliable and durable. On the one near my couch, I've spilled water on it, knocked it off the stand, and one of my parrots likes to land on top of the screen and poop onto the keyboard, but I've had zero issues. In my experience with low-price Dells, they've generally been pretty crappy. My wife and I each bought one maybe 6 years ago, and both were sent in multiple times for repairs before being scrapped in under 4 years due to hardware failures. We have slightly higher-end Dell laptops at work and seem to be having work done on them constantly. I avoid Macs, but it's pretty much because I don't feel the luxury brand price is justified.
  25. kramnoj, Betancourt is the poster child for the "we're smarter than you are crowd because we use fancy sabermetric stats that weren't around 20 years ago" and only we can interpret them for you out of date traditionalists that actually watch guys play and decide for yourself I'd like to know who said they're smarter than you because they use numbers. Otherwise, ease off the martyrdom a little bit, especially the "unlike you, I watch games" tactic. Are you suggesting that those who disagree with you don't actually watch baseball games?
