Rule 5: Reliever Morlan in; Palmisano to Astros via Orioles; Minor League phase moves as well

I'll predict we lose Joe Bateman this morning. He could help a teams bullpen immediately. He really had a fantastic year this year. We should have put him on our 40. He have plenty of wastes holding spots, like Gwynn.

from MLBTradeRumors, via John Manuel of BA:

Manuel hears the Nationals will take Reds righty Terrell Young with the first pick. He also hears Brewers catcher Lou Palmisano will go in the first five picks.
Interesting...let's see if it goes down.

Here are the top 5 picks for the Rule 5 draft if you're trying to project a destination for Cap'n Lou:

1. Nationals

2. Mariners

3. Padres

4. Pirates

5. Orioles

Tough to lose a catcher that has shown he can hit, even if isn't the prospect we all hoped he would become.

Somewhere go brewcrew (the author of that amazing thread) is crying about Lou Palsmo not being Brwer anymore. Or, maybe he's posting on the Astros boards that their WOAHS are SOLVDD. Anyway, good luck Cap'n!

It sounds like Morlan should be good enough to make our bullpen and at least be good enough. Is there anyway we can go with the Cubs guy as well and still have a good enough bullpen? Is he more of a "stash and send down next year" guy or is he really just as good of a bet to do well as say Tim Dillard or Mark DiFelice?

Minor League Phase --

Brewers grab Mark Holliman, RHP (Cubs), as noted above

and Jonny Ash, 2B (Astros), Shane Justice, SS (Dodgers) and Juan Sanchez, SS (Twins)

More on those guys later on...

Wasn't Donald Veal a top prospect for the Cubs a year ago? I saw he got taken in the first round.

edit- I did a little looking and BA rated him 6th in the organization and Goldstein ranked him 3. It looks like he had a rough year repeating AA this year.

What are the rules for the minor league phase. Is it the same pool of guys as the major league phase and do they need to stay AAA or AA all year too? Thanks.

The receiving team can place them at any level, no restrictions whatsoever...

Why so many shortstops? We have JJ, Escobar, Brewer all seemingly desired at the position by brewer brass at some point. I'd have maybe looked for outfielders if we were looking at position guys, or at least only one shortstop.

ESPN's Keith Law just mentioned in his online chat that Morlan's velocity has been down, he's out of shape, and pitching poorly in winter ball. He didn't seem surprised that Tampa Bay left him unprotected to the Rule 5 draft.

Probably just for organizational filler. Not everyone in the minors is destined for the majors, but you still need 9 on the field every day.
