Hoffman Replacing Broxton in All Star Game

Not sure why they would send Gallardo, just to have him unavailable to play. Hoffman would be okay. Just a different animal this year with having to play the 4 game series and only 3 days rest. It's not even as if Gallardo's normal mid-start throwing day is Tuesday. But he deserves to be called an All-Star.

Agreed - it's pretty sad that the only reason a pitcher can be considered to be an all-star is because they can pitch in the game, merits are taken out of the equation...somewhat.

Normally I would agree, but for this season I'm fine with Yo sitting home resting up.

Excellent. I wonder if they will print Hoffman all-star jersey shirts. I really want one.

Didn't you get the memo. This time it counts! So, it's no longer about honoring players and presenting a fun exhibition, but actually means something.

Supposedly anyways. I've seen no noticable difference in how the game is managed. If it counts so much, why doesn't Pujols play the whole game?

Yeah, I don't get why it was him over Gallardo, but oh well I guess. Yo needs the rest.
Because Duke is available to pitch. A pitcher isn't going to be named strictly on merits, that player HAS to be able to play....

Gallardo should get named & then beg off, its a good thing for the Brewers from a bargaining position that he didn't get named http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

No doubt Gallardo has pitched like an All-Star and one of the best in the NL. But with him unavailable to pitch it would not make sense to add him. He will make plenty of All-Star teams before his career is over.

What would happen if the only rep from a team (who happens to be a pitcher) begged off because of injury or unavailability to pitch? Would they still pick anyone from the league, or would they be forced to get the 2nd best pither on that team to make sure that team is represented?

Congrats to Hoffman. In a Brewer-selfish way, I hope he isn't used.

I'm glad Hoffman made it. I would have preferred Gallardo because we've all been following him since he was drafted and Hoffman is a one-year rent-a-player, but it's still cool.

Lately it hasn't been a great thing for Brewers closers to get named all-stars. Kolb and Turnbow totally tanked after being named All-Stars and even Cordero pitched a bit worse. Let's hope Hoffman can buck the trend.

Wow, that is pretty crazy. In the past 6 years we've had 4 different closers go to the all star game.

How on earth does Ian Kinsler keep getting passed over? I know Carlos Pena is having a good year but Kinsler has been great and Pedroia another 2B is whose was vacated. Coaches picking their own players frustrates me.

I think it's because they wanted Pena in the home run derby.

I think it's because managers pick their own players over the players who actually deserve it.

Greatest Clash-Baseball reference ever--way to go man! Seriously, neither Yo or Hoffman deserves to go.

Um, ok. Hoffman: 2.05 ERA, 20 saves after missing the first month of the season, 2.65 K/BB ratio, .223 OPA, .525 OOPS.
