Roy Oswalt

The better scenario would be to see what the Brewers have with Gamel and see if he will stick at 1B.

The even better scenario is to see if Gamel sticks at 3B (which I believe he will), since McGehee is not good there. Casey should be the 1B imo.

That would be a great scenario. Of course the issue is that Gamel has to get healthy and start playing well again.

MLB Trade Rumors now has a story up that says Roy Oswalt has formally asked to be traded before July 31st. Supposedly the Rangers, Cardinals, and Braves are his top choices.

Mlbnetwork is confirming and talking about this right now, btw.

Yikes. Add him to the Cardinals rotation, and it would be hard not to picture them in the World Series.

In-the-moment musing......

I wonder if I wouldn't just trade Fielder for Oswalt + some salary relief. Oswalt's owed so much over the next couple years compared to what Prince is owed that you could probably get Houston to take Suppan or something comparably crappy just so the dollars aren't quite so lopsided.

Of course, there are a thousand holes you could shoot in that idea for various reasons. But Oswalt's a hard-throwing ace-type, and that's what this rotation needs. It does make me wonder what Oswalt would require (maybe guaranteeing his final year) to negate his opt-out potential for being traded in the middle of a multi-year contract.

Oswalt only wants to go to a contender, something we're not even close to being.
To paraphrase Bob Uecker ("we're just 2 grand-slams away from tieing this baby up!"):

Yeah but if we can get two solid starters, a closer, a lead-off hitter, another .350+ OBP hitter, plus a competent manager and pitching coach, we could make the playoffs!!!

Rumors flying everywhere about Oswalt to the Phillies. From mlbtr:

There are indications that the Phillies are working on a major trade for a starting pitcher, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. The team would move Jayson Werth in a related trade if they acquire a pitcher, according to Stark, who notes that the Phils have spent lots of time exploring a Roy Oswalt deal (Twitter link).

Ed Price of AOL FanHouse hears that the Astros may be close to presenting Oswalt with a trade scenario for him to consider (Twitter link). There's no guarantee that Oswalt would accept a deal to Philly.

What the hell are the Phillies doing? So basically they are saying they should have kept Lee but now will give up even more talent and get stuck with even more long term contracts for older players.

The Phillies are trying to win it all this year. Who cares about next year and the salary problems and lack of minor league talent if you've won it all this year.

What's weird is they're currently in third place in their division. Then again, they're only 4.0 games back in the wild card.

If your trying to win it all then you don't trade Lee. And you don't ship out Werth.

This makes perfect sense. They'll trade Werth to add prospects so they can get Oswalt, and they'll promote phenom Domonic Brown to take Werth's spot. Lee was a FA after this year, they'll have Oswalt for 2011, making them a major contender then too. Lee was traded to get Halladay, I can't call that a dumb move.

But they could've gotten Halladay without trading Lee. Really, trading Lee for what they did was a really dumb move.

ESPN just reported that Oswalt has accepted a trade that will send him to the Phillies for J.A. Happ and two prospects. The Phillies have now traded for Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, and Roy Oswalt in a matter of one year. My question is, how can Philly have a farm system left at this point?

If the astro's just traded the 20+ million contract of Oswalt for J Happ (who has 4 team control years left) and 2 minor league prospects, then the Phillies just got taken to the cleaners. Why would you trade Happ for Oswalt? I don't see the logic there. Happ has looked like a stud the few times I have seen him and could be a top rotation guy.

I don't know anything about Happ but I looked at his numbers...

Happ pitched 160+ innings last year with an ERA under 3. He's also younger and cheaper than Oswalt. I don't get it at all.
