Best songs that build up

Thanks to excel's text to columns feature and some common sense, I've

created a master list sorted by artist and made it the lead post. The

playlist is far from being complete, but at least the Zune Marketplace

is making it easy getting all of the songs. Now it's a matter of

trimming out songs that I don't like (sorry GNR) but I figured people

should be able to see the master list if they want to make a similar

playlist. So far I'm a huge fan of the mix of artists and style of

music...should be an interesting final product.

Much like I like picking out new microbrews I've never heard of based

upon the name and style of beer, I always enjoy listening to an artist I've never heard of

before. Whirring is a great song and I still haven't digested all of

the bands Menotti and others mentioned, but I have heard of quite a few of them

(huge Silversun Pickups fan!).

Another one would be 'American Woman' by the Guess Who (the full version).

Great call. I can't believe I didn't think of this one!

Gettin' Better - Tesla

Yeah, that's right. I said Tesla.

I know I'm nitpicking, but technically several of these songs are not acoustic at the beginning nor during any other part of the song.
Motorcycle Driveby was the motivation for this playlist. This is why I said it was an ideal song...but it doesn't have to. Removing this barrier opened up a wide variety of style that I enjoy when I listen to music.

I have to ask... why do you want such a list of songs that build up? Is it for something specific, or do you just like that style of song?

My brother and I were discussing that style song over the weekend and we mutually concluded that it was a unique style song that we both enjoy listening to. He even went as far as claiming it was the best kind of music. Also, it might make a great biking mix too...I really can't think of any other reason. My brother does have a birthday coming up that I could gift this playlist to him, but that was definitely not my intent. I'll use it more than him.

Thanks, zurch, I was wondering.

A few more, if they're wanted

Allman Brothers - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

Ben Harper - So High So Low

Billy Joel - Captain Jack

CCR - I Heard it Through the Grapevine

DMB - You Might Die Trying -- be sure it's a live version... Live at Mile High Music Festival is a good label-released live version

The Decemberists - The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid

Foo Fighters - Everlong, This is a Call

Jethro Tull - Cross-Eyed Mary, Locomotive Breath

Led Zeppelin - Dazed & Confused (first version -- there are two -- off the BBC Sessions album), What is and What Should Never Be

Pete Yorn - Atlantic City/Murray (live track, off of Live from New Jersey), Crystal Village

The Raconteurs - Carolina Drama, Rich Kid Blues

Robert Randolph & the Family Band - Ted's Jam, Shake Your Hips, Tears of Joy (basically anything off Live at the Wetlands)

Santana - Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen

I'd just like to randomly add that The Raconteurs' "Carolina Drama" is probably my favorite song right now. It also would seem to fit the type of song you're looking for perfectly.

Motley Crew - Home Sweet Home

It's a piano at the beginning, not a guitar but it builds up pretty well. First one that comes to mind.

American Pie - Don McLean

Yeah that's right. I said Don McLean.

I'm fairly certain this hasn't been mentioned yet. I know it's not acoustic, but it may be one of the best build up songs I've ever heard:

Metallica - Enter Sandman

I just updated the list from everything above this post. For all the

people that questioned the acoustic guitar criteria, check out Modest

Mouse - Parting of the Sensory. This song does an excellent job slowly

transitioning from the acoustic start. May be some profane language in the song just to warn you.

Edit: Youtube is broken and profanity warning
