Brewers owner Mark Attanasio "has been involved" in talks with free agent starter Kyle Lohse, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

The Brewers have been a logical landing spot for Lohse since he hit the open market, so it's no surprise that they're being linked to the righty once again. But, even with Attanasio's reported involvement, nothing seems imminent. "Things change. You never know. But at this point, we want to look at our [young] guys first," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Saturday. "I'm not opposed to giving up a first-round pick if it's a 30-year-old guy you give a three- or four-year deal to."

Giving up a 1st round pick for a 34 year old pitcher seems well, dumb.

No. I've seen this explained a couple of times. It's against the rules and MLB has said they won't allow it to happen even if it does.

Really don't understand why Cleveland hasn't signed Lohse. They are making a run at it, they could use some pitching, and the draft pick compensation for them is very small. At this point any team with a protected pick really should be looking at signing Lohse to flip at the deadline.

I think it's the same reason no one else has signed him. He isn't that good. 2 decent years and the rest of his career he has been a flop, or at least below average.

 

He hasn't been signed due to the draft pick and the fact that he just isn't that good...

I just don't want him at all. You sign him for 3+ years the backend of the contract is going to be a disaster. You sign him for two years or less you give up a draft pick for a band-aid solution.

I don't think it would be the end of the world to sign him to a 2 year contract with a 3rd year option for around 10 a year. Could slide in to the #2 slot and make us a legit contender in my mind. His numbers have been really good the last two years and a 2 year contract doesn't kill you. losing the draft pick would hurt but I don't think it kills the system and its not like Seid has a great drafting record anyways

Of course giving up a pick and signing a 34 year old pitcher to a multi-year deal wouldn't be the end of the world. It would merely be incredibly stupid.

As many of stated, our farm system is down right now, mainly cause our top prospects are in the lower levels. But we might not have an offense this good again for awhile. I don't want to waste this season with below average pitching and just so we can have some player (who has a 50/50 shot of even making it to the majors) help us win 85 games for a few years.

That's not the reason it's down. Off the top of my head 6 of our top prospects will be at worst in Huntsville this year.

The Brewers aren't a team that needs to be giving up first round picks at all right now. If we were talking about re-signing Zack Greinke, fine. Lohse isn't a guy you give up a draft pick for.

Regardless of the draft pick, money, Lohse's age, or years of the contract involved, he is still a terrible pitcher who happened to put a high number in his W column two years in a row and I never want to see him in a Brewer uniform. He is a bad pitcher.

Don't ya think bad is a bit of underrating him? He would most likely be our 2nd best pitcher. the question is if the upgrade from Rogers/Narveson to him is worth the contract and loss of a draft pick. I can see both sides of the argument.

Wolf was solid for the first two years. Same with Suppan. Might be able to get him on a 2 year deal at this point. Besides in 2 years Gallardo Weeks Hart Gomez Aoki Ramirez are all likely to be gone or soon to be gone and we will be rebuilding again. Now is the time to go for it

Wow. How does he have a job? That is ridiculous. Other than the last 2 years, Lohse has been a #4/5 starter his whole career. If he didn't play for the Cardinals I might be more willing. But for some reason, guys have monster years with the Cardinals and just can't repeat it anywhere else.

And losing the pick is doubly painful, as we lose it to the Cardinals. So it knocks our draft down a bit, but also boosts our rivals.

As far as pitching talent, added rotation dependability, and "veteran-ness" goes, I really wouldn't mind slotting Lohse in behind Gallardo this year and possibly even next year. No one seems to think there's a possibility that, assuming his demands drop to a decent contract over 1 or 2 years, that he pitches well enough in that time to offer him a qualifying offer and get a pick back after his time here. To me, that's a big factor that could help negate the lost draft pick. Given a 3-4 year deal I wouldn't count on getting that back, but I think he could put up 1-2 productive years.
