And if Gallardo goes seven innings tomorrow night, Yost looks pretty stupid.

I don't think so. That would leave Turnbow and Cordero available for the last 2 innings, and they'll be fresh and ready to go because they weren't used today. If anything, your scenario would make Yost's decisions today look even better.

Watching Suppan get destroyed and knowing he's being paid big money to be mediocre is really starting to annoy me. That MVP and "ability to win" didn't look very helpful today.

I wonder how good he'll be in 2010. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

I wish you hadn't brought that up. Now I will start thinking about it and I never thought he was better than our 3rd best starter. He isn't ever going to be much more than an inning eater who will give up 3-5 runs and go 5-7 innings a game. That is a lot of money for what you expect your 4th or 5th starter to do. Just goes to show how overpaid free agents are in general.

EDIT: My brother always explained the baloon at the end of his contract away by saying that we can always trade him. I hope he is right.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Right, if Suppan proves to not be worth his contract, he can just be traded away.

Wait a second...

Or that balloon make him untradable.

Maybe Suppon wanted that balloon, thinking at that point in his career he didn't really want to move on. And the Brewers weren't willing to give him a no trade clause.

Yeah, you're right. We couldn't have used Villaneuva at all yesterday. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I said it when we signed him and I will say it again: Suppan just isnt good. The contract we gave him was ridiculous and I really hope it doesnt affect our ability to pay guys like JJ and Prince when the time comes. All the blame for Suppan goes directly to the owner because Melvin would never pay that kind of money for a mediocre pitcher. I really hope that this doesnt stop us from resigning Sheets next year because he is a true number one starter while Suppan is nothing more than a mediocre 5.

I think most teams would be wetting themselves to have Suppan as a #5.

Depending on your assessment of the rotation, most teams would wet themselves to have Dave Bush or Claudio Vargas as a fifth starter.

That said, the Suppan signing doesn't look so good right now. Actually, it looks horrible right now. It strikes me as a signing that has more value as a message to future free agents that Milwaukee is serious about being a contender than it does a signing that's going to put the current team over the top.

Just a month ago everyone was singing Suppan's praises as he started out hot. Now that he's struggling he's all of a sudden a horrible signing? Suppan is what he is, a slightly above average pitcher who's signing was pretty much a necessary evil after we traded Davis.

I don't know that I agree about the "necessary evil" part. I also don't know that I agree with the idea that everyone was "singing Suppan's praises" at any point. Frankly, while I was pleased with how he started, I never liked the signing much from a "helping the team win this year" standpoint.

We're a contender, and Suppan's a big part of this team going anywhere. I'm not hoping he gets DFAed. I'm hoping he rights himself this summer, because he's been quite flat lately.

The funny part about discussing the Suppan free agent signing is, numerous posters were crying about how the Brewers wern't doing anything in regard to making the team better. I for one was one of them.

Is signing Suppan what I ws looking for? I knew we weren't going after Zito. I was just happy that the front office was looking at improving the team and signing Suppan is an improvement.

What is not discussed that much is, behind the scene's, Suppan is educating our young guys with what it take's to be a major league pitcher/player. Coaches can state the same thing, I know. But he breathe's it and demonstrates it daily.

It may be best to come to a conclussion of his signing at the end of the year. Right now, we are in first place and I am thrilled!

The funny part is that the ones who generally cry about the Brewers lack of off season moves generally don't mind over paying for free agents.

I agree. It is not there $$$$$. It is always easy to spend money that is not your own. Would I have wanted a more proven pitcher. SURE. But I have to trust that Doug and staff know what they are doing.

I am futher more grateful as all get out that we are competitive and lastly in first place.

Ah, I don't really think he did anything wrong tonight. That's really nitpicking to say a guy who had given up one hit in his last five innings and was at 93 pitches should have been pulled. He's made egregious errors in handling the pen in the past, but this definitely doesn't qualify.
Posted

The facts speak for themselves.

What facts? He pitched to three hitters and got pulled. It wasn't like he was hung out to dry. Yost went to his most consistent reliever, and he made a bad pitch. It happens. There was nothing wrong with his managing tonight. Gallardo was cruising, and Yost had every reason to think he would continue to when he was facing Feliz, Vizquel, and Frandsen, who are all terrible hitters.

You're looking for anything to rip Yost on, and it's silly. I'm far from an apologist or fan of his, but he played it right tonight.

Nah, if you search the message board you'll see this is the first time I've ever criticized Yost.

I definitely respect your opinion, but I feel like a 21 year-old pitcher making his first start should be pulled with 94 pitches after six innings of solid work. He's amped up, he's no doubt overthrowing a little bit, and he's had a solid start. What is the marginal benefit of having him go out there for another inning?

I would hope that in the future Yost plays it safe with our phenom pitcher at the risk of taxing the back-end of our bullpen.

Yost has made systematic errors throughout the year with regard to the bullpen, but this has nothing to do with that.

This has to do with the development and protection of a young pitcher.

Kruk...hmmm...i don't know where to start. YoGa never pitched in any Mexican league. He went to Trimble Tech!..look it up for crissakes! You are a complete and utter boob. BBTN is really suffering.
Posted
Yes thank you iluvlamp. I saw that. Hey Kruk here's a clue just because he was born in Mexico doesn't mean he lived there his whole life. He went to high school in Texas, never played in a Mexican League so he wasn't put in "big games before he even went to play minor league baseball" as you put it.

Yeah, I have to stick up for Ned. I didn't have a problem with how he handled things last night. Yo looked good, and deserved a shot to complete the seventh, but the right decision was made to pull him after that walk.

As for Kruk, what more can be said?

He's pitched well over 94 pitches before, and he was rolling. The team had a 4 run lead.

The benefit is that you save the bullpen for another night.

I've been visiting a lot of fan forums lately and every single one of them complains about how the manager uses the bullpen... so it is no longer going to bother me when people complain about Yost.

Fans will simply never be happy.
