My first preference is Moniak, but I doubt he'll get to us based on what Joel Sherman has said. Otherwise I'd be cool with Pint, Rutherford, Lewis, or Lowe.

Wow, I'm sure Collins is within the range of reasonableness for our pick, but no way am I taking a guy with those college K numbers at #5 overall.

You realize our last #5 pick, Ryan Braun, struck out 130 times in his three years at Miami, right? K's are a part of the game. You can't focus on them without looking at the BB rate as well. Unless we have contact rates to correlate with the strikeouts, they K's themselves are meaningless. I'm far from worried about Collins ability to hit. You see his K's and I see the fact that even with 159 Ks, he managed to walk 168 times. We see what we want to see.

 

Collins would be a great pick at 5.

 

I mean, Rickie Weeks only struck out 66 times in 541 AB in college. Shows what that reflects...

 

Kris Bryant struck out 137 times, Conforto K'd 122 times, George Springer struck out 161 times. You don't get power hitters without strikeouts, folks. It doesn't work that way.

Lewis, Rutherford, or Collins for me. Pint is super interesting not just because of his velocity but because of his overall athleticism and change-up. However, too much risk to take when theres middle of the order bats available.

 

I'm very against Ray, you just can't ignore his uninspiring production. He'd be a Jed Bradley type pick. Ray is somewhat similar to Kentrail Davis.

Finally someone said what I have thought & been thinking about Ray. I could be very wrong but I will be doing some praying at work that we don't draft Ray.

 

I still just don't know how you can pass on Groome at #5. 17 yrs old lefty, outstanding frame, mid 90s FB, one of the best HS curveball seen in years, and very clean mechanics. He's 17, maturity issue will be there but the upside is just too high.

 

Pint seems to have none of those maturity issues & appears to be an outstanding, hard working, talented kid. His arm is less beat up because his parents were smart and shielded him over throwing. Mechanics & power arm just scare me a bit.

 

Lowe & Garrett are two guys I am extremely pulling for. Think both are future All-Stars with Lowe being a gold glove 3B with one of top power strokes from the corner.

 

Moniak & Rutherford are both solid picks. I love Mickey! True CF who can flat out hit. Rutherford gets such mix reviews but think he is an impact guy who will at least be an everyday starter who is a borderline all-star every season.

 

Edit: Lewis- keep forgetting since I believe he will be long gone but hard not to love his bat!

 

Colliens- won't be excited with but know he will be our new LaPorta. Hopefully once he makes it he continues to mash though unlike Matt.

 

Senzel & Ray- solid guys, solid ceiling, pass though.

 

Perez- #47 if there, avoid now at 5

My gut wants pitching... thus Groome and Pint are interesting.

 

But ColbyJack's write-up about Lowe has me interested. Similar with Collins and Rutherford.

 

So I predict:

- Most likely: Rutherford

- If a pitcher: Groome

- Sleeper: Lowe

Question on Lowe:

Has it been determined he's set in stone on playing 3b? MLB's draft preview says this:

While there's more projection involved when evaluating Lowe as a pitcher, it's easy to dream on an athletic 6-foot-4, 190-pounder with a loose arm and relatively clean delivery. He works at 91-93 mph and can hit the mid-90s with his fastball, which plays up thanks to its downward plane, run and sink. Lowe's three-quarters breaking ball lacks consistency, but it has the makings of a solid slider, and he has some feel for a sinking changeup that gets too firm at times

 

Seems interesting. I think Alex Verdugo was more a pitcher in few drafts ago and the Dodgers took him to play OF instead. To my surprise as I really liked his pitching videos. So could a team take Lowe and put him down for Pitcher? Could he do both?

For me, if Lewis is still available at #5 I think its a no-brainer (at least as far as position players goes). Throw Puk in the mix as well and youre right, that would be fascinating.

I'm all in hope of Riley Pint. 102MPH is what Aroldis Chapman tosses. If Chapman becomes his floor, we'll get prospects to fill future needs. 102 is a batter commiting to swinging before he even throws. So wildness becomes a mute point, the swing is already happening. Now if he reaches a Full time Starter? That will be a blast in all of baseball to watch.

Callis and Mayo's latest mock pretty much throws all previous mocks out the window! This should make tonight VERY interesting as they seem to be the most well connected with what teams are actually thinking.

 

Seems like teams at the top are now focusing on bats. The Perez failed drug test just throws a huge Monkey wrench into the Brewers (and others) draft boards.

 

I'd be leary of taking Collins at #5 overall, as I consider him a poor man's Kyle Schwarber and seems like a Jack Z type of pick.

 

Rutherford has a higher ceiling than the rumored new #1 overall pick Moniak, IMHO, so I wouldn't be against the pick, especially if they can sign him a bit underslot and increase the potential talent of their 2nd round pick. Would be interesting to see him go higher than Lewis, however.

 

I have a gut feeling that high school RHP Ian Anderson could end up the best of Puk, Groome, Pint, so I hope he's at least near the top of the Brewers draft board.

 

Here's my total guess at the final internal Brewers draft board:

1. OF Blake Rutherford

2. RHP Riley Pint

3. LHP Jason Groome (fallen behind Pint because of signibility concerns)

4. OF Corey Ray

5. C/1B Zac Collins

6. SS Delvin Perez (fell from #1 on their board due to failed drug test)

7. OF Kyle Lewis

8. RHP Ian Anderson

9. LHP AJ Puk

10. RHP Dakota Hudson

 

I left Moniak off, because I think if Phillies don't take him, it's a slam dunk Rockies will, meaning their is zero chance he's available at #5. I actually think the Brewers perfer Rutherford anyway, and I agree with that assessment.

 

And although a high upside SP is more of a need for the Brewers, I believe they are sticking to "best player available", which tends to work out in the long run.

 

My personal opinion is to grab Pint if available. He has a lower floor than others, but his ceiling is that of Justin Verlander.

I don't follow these guys, so thank you all for the information you provide.

 

That said, I hope that the Brewers can land a potential ace pitcher, and that they don't "go cheap" in order to get more depth in later rounds. That strategy was great for a few seasons when our system was devoid of talent, but now our system has depth and needs superstar-potential talent.
