Must win?
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

For as much as the Brewers are all in on the platoon lineups this year, playing the Indians and Tigers has made me wonder the following...

Maybe they should attempt to either acquire or develop decent switch hitters going forward? The Indians were starting 5 switch hitters against the Brewers last weekend and the Tigers have 3 in their lineup. Obviously they had Grandal last year and Smoak this year, but I can't remember a time the Brewers had 3+ switch hitters in their lineup?

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Is it ok to be excited about Burnes or do we ignore his stats because its a weird season. I have seen a bunch of excuses made for guys who aren't playing well so does that mean to just throw out all the good that Burnes has done.

I mean, this sample isn't enough to put him in as the ace of the rotation for years to come. But this isn't the same pitcher who literally pitched himself out of AAA last year.

What's with the dumb base-running by the Brewers.

Runner on third less than one out in the first inning last night, and Yelich is out by a mile trying to steal 2nd. Now Urias costs them a run getting thrown out at 3rd.

Urias getting thrown out at third with nobody out is obviously something you can’t afford to risk, but it was also a great play by the third basemen using his knee to block the bag otherwise Urias would’ve been safe.

It's about separating results from performance, and to an extent performance from talent. Good results and good performance (especially if there's a good track record, indicative of taletn) and you believe in it. Good performance but poor results and you should have some patience. Burnes is both pitching well and getting results, so believe in him. Whereas you shouldn't have believed in Jon Lester after his first 3-4 starts; his ERA was good, literally everything else was a red flag. Some stats you can trust more than others in small sample sizes, so trust in them.

Burnes getting rid of the 4 seemer and replacing it with the cutter has really been a godsend.

No more high fastballs......which were being hit out of the park last season.

When a young guy struggles for a year and then makes significant changes and improves it’s ok to be excited.

We all were excited by his minor league performance.....it’s great to see him start to figure it out.

It's ok to be excited about any pitcher throwing backdoor cutters on 3-2 counts at 94, no matter how weird a season it is. Burnes looks fantastic this year - when you really think about it, he's on the same track Woodruff's career was, where this is the season Burnes would hopefully take a full next step and establish himself as a good starter at the MLB level.

One thing this year is likely pointing out is how much video work/analysis was being done during game action in the dugout/clubhouses across MLB. Quite a few players are already talking about how not having that is impacting their games.

Boyd Aviation may hit the hangar early today
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006
