Cain just bought himself another month.

You’re dreaming if you think the Brewers would DFA Cain anytime soon regardless of one game.

He makes what? 15% of the total team payroll. They might need his roster spot eventually, but nobody wants to have that percentage of their payroll go to a player to not play for them. Injuries might force their hand but they’ll give Cain every chance to get it going before eating that type of money. The Brewers just don’t eat 12 million dollars, never have and never will.

How do you know what his trade market has been? Maybe the fact that we've been contending for the last five years has something to do with that fact...

They've actively and openly shopped him, and they've shown a willingness to deal relievers before, even when contending.

What is the recent precedent for a huge trade haul for a reliever? The relief market in general just hasn't been what it was. It's not like 2016 anymore when the Yankees got a top end prospect for a rental of Chapman.

Unfortunately despite his dominance the club control is dwindling and the price tag on Hader is increasing which further lessens his value.

They basically did exactly that with Jeff Suppan.

They are eating it right now while he hurts the product on the field.  It’s a sunk cost, playing him is making them worse, which affects attendance, which costs them more money.  I don’t get the logic to keep him because they are paying him.

Adames kills the comeback for now ... Adames-effect is wearing off ... he's down to .193 now.

When he goes cold he really goes Siberian.

If this is actually the Brewers thinking (and none of us knows if this is how the front office actually thinks), then that's wrong, dumb, and stupid.  As other people have pointed out, Cain is a sunk cost. They're paying him regardless if he plays, doesn't play, or whatever.  Everyone here knows what sunk cost means. Right now, and honestly for the rest of the year, he's actively hurting the team's chances of winning almost every time out there by putting up a .440-ish OPS. Paying him to not play, and finding literally anyone else would be a net plus for the rest of the season.  I'm pretty sure an analytics-driven front office understands that, and hope they pull the trigger sooner, rather than later.

Wrong. Cain makes 18 million this year. Suppan never made that type of money with the Brewers. So no they didn’t basically eat 12 million (2/3 of 18 million) with Suppan.

Fans are great at statements like that “it’s a sunk cost” but fans aren’t the ones who have to write the checks while Cain is relaxing at home in Oklahoma.

They most likely will need his roster spot at some point, but they are going to try everything before they write him checks to stay home. That’s just reality.

How much of the contract do they have to eat if they play him?

Yelich starting to hit the ball hard again. Six balls in play over 100 mph in the last three games.
