If Bauer is DFA'd by the Dodgers should Milwaukee be a player

Posted

I was reading an article that mentioned the Dodgers might release Trevor Bauer after his suspension ends in early January.  The Dodgers are on the hook for his $22 million dollar salary regardless of who might pick him up at league minimum.  I was thinking that the Milwaukee Brewers might be a destination for Bauer.  The city is off the MLB radar allowing him the opportunity to get his act together.  There also is the fit, he has a strong personality and has had issues in the past.

I don't know...this isn't going to go well given how anything that even brushes up against opinions on issues that can be viewed as political are discouraged, but I'll do my best to avoid that.

I don't like Bauer, I didn't like him before this. He seems like a very unlikeable guy. Probably why there wasn't a whole lot of people in his corner from the start on this and this seemed like the final nail in the coffin of his career, sounded like it was a no-brainer, whatever consent there had been had been taken back or whatever. He fought back with the text messages and I think MOST people thought...those didn't really mean anything, it's what happened after that's at issue...and then the video came out. People can look and make their own decisions.

But I was just watching the Law and Order Channel cover this. AFTER this horrible violent assault is supposed to have taken place, they're in Bed. Bauer has one of those sleep masks on and the girl is taking a video panning over to Bauer and then back to herself giggling and biting her lip.

At that point, I don't know what the hell happened.

So how are we supposed to adjudicate these things in sports or entertainment. You're accused of something and you're generally unemployable(I hate the term canceled, but I guess that's what it is) until you've gone through the process and maybe then...MAYBE you get another shot if it seems as though you might, possibly have been innocent?

So I don't really feel like being the moral authority on things that can be so ambiguous. I can only look at what's out there.

I'd talk to the players on the team, get their opinions and if they can put up with him for a year, yeah, I'd sign him.

So would I.

When your livelihood is threatened, I’m guessing it changes a person’s outlook and when given a second-chance, and also being his contract year, I’m guessing he’d be a fantastic teammate.

Baseball-wise, he’d help this team get to the WS. It doesn’t matter that he hasn’t pitched in 18 months and counting. He’s the smartest pitcher, maybe ever. The guys built-up his arm to throw every 4 days or 5 days and 120-130 pitches every outing.

This would be a fantastic signing.

Yeah, from a Baseball standpoint, there's no question.

I'll be honest though...I don't really see Bauer changing. He may be more...discerning in his personal life, but he's got an ego. As brilliant as he's been going from an unathletic dude to a Cy Young winning pitcher, he's equally stubborn and arrogant.

But can we get through a year and make it work? He's been a loner everywhere he's went. So he'd likely be one here.

The idea of Burnres/Woodruff/Bauer/Peralta/Lauer and then Ashby to the pen with Houser? Of you flip Lauer for a stud reliever? I don't know. It'd be interesting.

I don't care what a player does during their personal time.  The only thing I care about is if the player helps the Brewers win.  If Bauer helps the Brewers win then I want him on the team if he doesn't then I don't want him on the team.  I think he helps the Brewers win and it would put them over the top in terms of their starting rotation.  The Brewers would have 2 aces and a #1 pitcher going 1-3 with a good #2 or #3 pitcher at the #4 spot.  I don't care what Bauer did or does that is basically a dream rotation.

I don't really cheer for players anymore.  It is the team that I cheer for and there are probably already some players who are just like Bauer on the team already and probably someone in the Brewers organization also.

Bauer has been on record saying he loves Milwaukee in the summer so I could see a one year deal, assuming the Brewers were willing to take a little heat in signing him. Our rotation would be really good and really deep.

Kinda gross if you ask me, but to each their own.

From a baseball standpoint, sure.

The other stuff isn't great obviously but you would be surprised what is hidden from the media when it comes to professional athletes.

For a minimum contract, I would give him a try. If he is a problem by any means, you let loose and move on.

The legal stuff withstanding, the guy has always been a pretty major jerk. There's no chance the Brewers bring in a potential cancer like that. There aren't enough outspoken vet types in the clubhouse to counteract the potential negatives, as we saw from the Hader trade fallout.

Thing that gets me, besides the actual documented physical injuries that he caused this woman (which are so utterly abhorrent), is the fact that there are multiple other women dating back to his time in Cleveland that have made sexual assault allegations against him. People who do stuff like that shouldn't have a place in society let alone on a major league baseball field.

Of course he'd help the Brewers. He's a Cy Young winning pitcher in the prime of his career. But life is so much more than just winning baseball games.

The thing that gets me is that AFTER those injuries...that we've heard about...what sounded like a violent assault...she's laying in a bed with him giggling and showing a video of Trevor Bauer sleeping with a mask over his face? This is the man she was terrified of?

This is after the...incident.

Then the restraining order after Bauer doesn't see her for 6 weeks, from the time this video was taken until that court appearance...during which time she comes out and says that she shared communications from Bauer with friends for attention and called it an "ego thing."

I have a hard time reconciling that THIS women in this video is terrified to see Trevor Bauer.  The text messages already had me...extremely skeptical. She'd been assaulted on the first occasion, but wanted it to be "rougher" the 2nd time while she made the long drive to Bauer's house? This has me...bewildered. She's an adult women with agency and she claims she was coerced by Bauer?

So what evidence are we meant to go off of to conclude he's a predator? If you're going to slap that label on someone...one that's as close to the lowest you can get in society(child abuse...elderly abuse I guess...not many other things that are more deplorable)...then we should be pretty damn sure what's going on and I don't have a clue after seeing all of this how you conclude he is.

I am more than open to having my mind changed and if I've got anything out of order or sequence, I'd like to know about it. I'm not digging in here as some Men's rights activist, I'm just trying to sort through this and trying to be objective.

You have credible accounts?  The justice system didn't find any corroborating evidence to even try the man, yet you can undeniably condemn the man because of what you see in a picture and what is said on tv.   If Bauer can help this team win games and be a good teammate for one year the Brewers should absolutely look into this kind of a signing.  I am sure he is humbled by the experience and will be on his best behavior.  If I recall correctly Josh Hader wasn't any saint either with his racist remarks.  Yet minority player's had zero problems playing with him.

Don’t see Mark A and his “Family Organization” wanting to take on the negative PR hit regardless of what the baseball implications could be.

And this will limit the "Family Organization".  Must be nice to not worry about baseball but public opinion.

People need to quit bringing up Josh Hader to draw some kind of moral equivalency. Josh Hader was a minor when he made his twitter posts (which were still completely wrong). Trevor Bauer is a full-fledged adult who brutally beat a woman to a pulp...Plus Josh Hader owned up to what he did, and apologized in front of his teammates. Trevor Bauer has done the literal opposite.

The fact that he wasn't charged criminally means absolutely nothing, given the extraordinarily high standard of proof required in a criminal setting. He's morally responsible for what he did and will pay the price for it in MLB and society. Completely innocent people don't tend to have multiple sexual assault allegations levied against them, with pictures to show for.

I don’t believe it’s one hundred percent of one and zero percent of the other, both are likely considered & weighed in some unknown measure.

Over the last five seasons the Brewers have won the 6th most games in MLB, which is pretty good for not worrying about baseball.

Will some team(s) put the public opinion aside and offer Bauer a spot in 2023 for baseball reasons? Time will tell.

I don’t think it will be the Brewers though.

This analysis of events is completely besides the point to me. Any decent, respecting man should never intentionally injure a woman to the extent that Bauer did. And then the additional allegations from back in Cleveland tend to refute his overarching claim of complete innocence...

Playing MLB is a privilege afforded to very few. You can lose it just as easily as you can earn it. Bauer will be fine regardless as he's already made tens of millions of dollars in his career. I sure as heck don't want a person who beats women to a pulp and doubles down instead of apologizing on my favorite team. I suspect many in the Brewers clubhouse and in the FO would feel the same way.

So we're basically judging them for enjoying rough consensual activities?

I don't judge people for their preferences?

And she doesn't look like she's been abused there. You're infantilizing this women.

I don't see how you can look at that video and say THAT is after a violent sexual assault. That's her...as she said(literally) sharing images of Bauer for attention for her "ego." Those are her words.

And Cleveland, it was a 20 year old girl in AAA whom I believe Bauer called the police on because she wouldn't leave.

I'm "infantalizing" this woman"? It's called basic respect for women, dude. What a shameful take. But, then again, you are eager to sign Aroldis Chapman, too, so I shouldn't be surprised.

I don't think the Brewers actually WILL sign him. The sensationalized reporting that initially came out made it toxic. It was originally reported she had a fractured skull.

That's what I suspect most people are left with.

I think we have to be more discerning than this. Not everything is black and white.

Bill Cosby is free. I think we'd all agree...he's a bad guy. Even if they didn't get him on the one charge, he went uncharged for a LOT of accusations.

There is a LOT of nuance to be considered beyond charged or not charged. District Attorney's have a legal obligation to NOT charge unless they're confident they can get a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt.
