Less than I expected for Longo, but he lives in AZ so wouldn’t be surprised if he left a couple two tree million on the table to be closer to home.

Probably not a difficult choice for a guy who has made $144m in his career already...

honestly thought he had retired like 3 years ago but then I realized I always get him confused with David Wright

ARI does have the geographical advantage, but he did also express desire to play for a while layoff team. That, plus 1-2million more might have tempted him.

I’m starting to get concerned the brewers are going the cheapskates this offseason with a small realistic competitive window right now

So … Mancini or Duvall … or the rookies

Here's a list of FA RHB that fit the positions we could use another bat, and their wRC+ v. LHP the last 3 seasons and 2022.

v. LHP last 3 seasons. (2022)

Pollock 155 wRC+ (161 wRC+)

McCutchen 145 wRC+ (106 wRC+)

Grossman 139 wRC+ (157 wRC+)

Solano 121 wRC+ (112 wRC+)

Pinder 118 wRC+ (108 wRC+)

Mancini 116 wRC+ (88 wRC+)

Pillar 112 wRC+ (only 4 PA)

Pham 111 wRC+ (115 wRC+)

Harrison 107 wRC+ (95 wRC+)

Duvall 95 wRC+ (129 wRC+)

Profar 95 wRC+ (115 wRC+)

Anderson 83 wRC+ (111 wRC+)

Andrus 81 wRC+ (139 wRC+)

Pollock would probably number one on my list. Pinder's versatility is an interesting add as an IF/OF. (3B, SS, 2B, LF, and RF)

Honest question, would a FA consider Milwaukee a playoff team? I think that would usually be an obvious playoff team…not a fringe playoff team that could easily fire sale in July.

I doubt he considered any team really not on the west coast. If he wanted a playoff team and found himself in the D Backs…probably a good sign he couldn’t find what he thought that was and went local.

I would rather play four rookies than re-sign Cutch

Polluck is older but talented

Duvall - also older - is supposed to be a good defensive RF with power

At that price, Milwaukee should definitely have rolled the dice on him.

Definitely. I just think MKE has a list, and if a player isn't on the list, they don't consider him.

Starting to? Have you just started following this team?

When only one performed better than McCutchen, are they really a significant upgrade?

McCutchen isn't currently on the team. Do you want McCutchen back on the roster as a short side platoon bat in the OF?

Nope, CC would still feel the need to play him every day and bat him clean-up.

Lol fair enough. But they did have a record payroll last year. Taking a step back in a competitive window is what would infuriate me.  Might as well rebuild if you’re not gonna go for it right now. I can see the reasoning if Longoria didn’t see this  as a legit playoff team when they’re clearly 2nd best in the division

A record payroll after years of big boosts in revenue sharing, new TV deal, baseball inflation, etc.

Probably about as meaningful of a raise as when your employer gives you a 5% cost of living raise at the end of the year after 9% inflation.

#17 payroll in 2011, #10 in 2012, #16 in 2019, and #19 in 2022. The Brewers aren’t really spending more, baseball values have just gone up in general and they are keeping pace.

That (combined with more new payouts, etc) makes their step back in spending this year even more inexcusable

Here are the Brewers full season OD Payrolls (with MLB rank) per Cots over the last 15 years, during which time the Brewers have won the 8th most games in MLB…

2022: $132M (19th)
2021: $99M (19th)
2019: $123M (17th)
2018: $99M (26th)
2017: $63M (30th)
2016: $64M (30th)
2015: $104M (20th)
2014: $104M (16th)
2013: $89M (19th)
2012: $98M (13th)
2011: $84M (17th)
2010: $90M (17th)
2009: $80M (17th)
2008: $81M (15th)

Two of their three division champions (2011 and 2021) happened after a step back in spending and the third (2018) came when they ranked 26th in OD payroll.

The two highest OD payrolls in franchise history (2019 & 2022) and the highest ranked (2012) resulted in fewer wins than the previous seasons after those division winners.

OD payroll is a big factor in how any given team’s season ultimately plays out, but the Brewers have a decade and a half long history of showing it isn’t the only factor.

If a lower OD payroll means more of a commitment to playing the position player prospects, I’d be more excited about 2023 personally.

I’d also be cool with offering fifty million to Correa for 2023 then he can try the whole free agency thing again next winter.
