So that would be the Reds # 2, 6, 9, and 11th ranked prospects for two years of Cease. Would love to know what Arnold is asking for Burnes.

Remember when there was talk that Burnes was no longer viewed as an ace?

I don't believe that to be the case. Not that I'd expect this back...more expensive next year, last year of FA, but they get the QO and a better pitcher.

Soto to Yankees

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/juan-soto-trade-yankees-land-star-slugger-from-padres-in-seven-player-blockbuster-per-report/amp/

Full deal:

RHP Michael King, RHP Drew Thorpe, RHP Jhony Brito, RHP Randy Vásquez and catcher Kyle Higashioka for Soto.

That seems like a wildly unremarkable return for Soto. I get they got some nice MLB caliber arms and depth, but...man, what they gave up for 1.5 years of Soto vs what they got back?

I wonder if Preller was told to go all in given the health of the Pads owner and if that was the driving force...try and do what it takes(and he certainly did, he traded away a young, all-star team and staff for an inflated roster).

If only they built like the Brewers...sure, there'd be that Mark A meme, but they'd be in much better position to actually win right now.

That's definitely what happened.  Honestly, it's kind of amazing and sad at the same time to see an owner essentially said, "I'm not dying without trying" and pushing all his chips in.

It kind of smacks of Ilitch's end of the line with the Tigers.

I saw some quotes from Boras indicating he's trying to get the Phillies to consider a contract extension for Bryce Harper...something along the lines related to the fact that his original THIRTEEN year deal included no opt-outs as a "good will" gesture by Harper to show his desire to be a career-long Phillie and also show to other marquee free agents that he's there for the long haul.  That since he's been so instrumental in getting free agents to come to Philadelphia, he now wants an extension (likely at closer to current market rate AAV I'm sure) that will have him playing into his 40's.

I would love for the Phillies' front office to call him back saying "That's great to hear Scott - looking forward to Bryce playing out his current contract that still has EIGHT years and a bit over $200 Million dollars left on it knowing he's a Phillie through and thorough, and come the 2031 season when Harper is a season away from free agency once again and pushing 39-40 yrs old, we'll be sure to see if he's still actually playing and then offer him a new deal at what his 2030-2031 production warrants.  Hopefully by then, Scott, you'd be retired or possibly deceased and we won't have to deal with your nonsense anymore.  Go find another one of your clients to rob a different organization with so you land one more golden parachute of a commission to buy another island."

I'm pretty sure that if you were to list the worst current free agent contracts across MLB right now for organizations, the percentage of agent representation tied to the Boras Corp would be over 70%.

It does...but the Tigers got closer IIRC and they weren't gutting elite talent from the farm system, were they? I thought it was just spending, but I could be wrong.

Small difference though, very similar feel to it.

Cards trade O'Neil to Boston, ok

The Red Sox basically gave up a couple of nobodies for a questionable bat.  O'Neill is good if he is healthy but that is a big IF.  The Cardinals got a AAAA bounce me around pitcher and a 7th or 8th man out of the bullpen piece.  Definitely sold low on O'Neill there.

MLB has announced Spring Breakout which is a showcase of prospects from every team.

https://www.mlb.com/news/spring-breakout-prospect-showcase-to-debut-in-2024?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Quote

All 30 MLB clubs will assemble rosters filled with 20-25 of their best prospects to take on top Minor League or rookie talents from other organizations. Each team will play at least one seven-inning exhibition game as part of the initiative. One Arizona and one Florida organization will play two over the four days to make the math work.

Twelve of this year’s matchups will be paired with Major League Spring Training games as part of in-stadium doubleheaders, giving fans a peek at their favorite team’s future and present in one memorable day.

“Spring Breakout will provide a new opportunity to showcase the future stars of the game as they continue on their journey to the Major Leagues,” MLB chief operations and strategy officer Chris Marinak said in a release Wednesday. “Our fans will get unique opportunities to meet our best prospects, get autographs and see the next generation of Major Leaguers up close. We are thrilled that Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball and all of our Clubs are working closer than ever to grow the game and to shine a brighter light on our future All-Stars.”

Rosters will be officially announced closer to the Spring Breakout. Prospects are eligible to play regardless of previous Minor League level or experience, allowing for a mix of near-MLB-ready players and some of pro ball’s youngest talent

Really fun idea.

Doubt Chourio will be partaking this year given he'll be in competition for a spot on the major league roster. Still, will be fun to see our top rated farm system match up against other teams.

The Brewers don't play until March 17th which is the last game of this.  I am fairly confident in Chourio being apart of this along with Black and Frelick.  There isn't really a rule of who is or isn't allowed to play in this game.  For example Corbin Carroll could be in this showcase.

True. I could maybe see them holding Chourio out of the major league game to play in the prospect showcase.

Depends how serious MLB wants teams to be about this. Brewers seemingly don't have much of an incentive here. Chourio needs at-bats against major league pitchers at this point, not whatever the Royals will throw out there.

Chourio will still get games against major league pitchers.  This is only one game.

It's only an exhibition, though. The Brewers gain nothing by playing Chourio in that game.

We'll see. MLB may force their hand.

All spring training games are only exhibition.  It is rare for a player to play the whole game during spring training.  Also facing MLB pitchers in spring training is not the same as facing MLB pitchers in an actual MLB game.  The majority of the time the pitcher is just working on something or are just warming up for the season.

Missing one game is not going to hurt Chourio or any prospect at all.  Not sure why you think the Brewers would hold him out of something like this.  Missing one game won't hurt Chourio's development.

I'm aware of spring training and how it works. I'm just pointing out how the Brewers in theory have zero incentive to play their $80 million investment in that game, as opposed to the major league game where he would get more reps against major league arms, regardless of whether the pitchers are going full-speed (though chances are it will be more regular season like given how relatively late in ST the game is).

Obviously, the chance of an injury is pretty much the same in both games, but it's a lot more palatable if Chourio were to get injured in a major league spring training game as opposed to a meaningless prospect showcase.

I ultimately don't care one way or the other because it's only one game, but it's a legitimate question to ask.
