If my math is right, that's 19-9 since they fell to .500 at 34-34.

And they are about to do the equivalent of trading for a top ten pitcher in MLB in August when Woody comes back.

With Cincinnati 1.5 games back and the Cubs on a hot stretch just 6 back of the Brewers, and both teams playing a lot over the next two months, that could be a huge series coming up to start next week. Hopefully St Louis can grab a game or two off the Cubs this weekend, but that series could make or break either teams season. More make for the Reds or break for the Cubs, but still!

For as bad as Peralta has been he somehow still has a 13.7% SwStr% which is 10th in the league for starting pitchers.  So there is some underlying data that Peralta should be pitching better than he has.

For the month of July he has been the 4th best starting pitcher by the same stat:

He has the best K-BB% of the Brewers rotation. His issue has largely come down to too many mistake pitches over the plate getting hit out of the park. His xERA after yesterday is 3.89 which is 60th percentile so not bad, but the 29th percentile Barrel Rate is likely where you find the issue and sure enough his 1.49 HR/9 is 47th among the 59 qualified pitchers. If he can limit the HR ball, he will start to pitch much better.

Reasons to be optimistic about the lineup turning it around the rest of the season:

Position (current wRC+, MLB rank) - Optimistic Notes
Catcher (113, 3rd) - All set, great offseason pickup MA!
Firstbase (78, 30th) - Santana 2023: 99 wRC+, Last 30 days: 96 wRC+, Proj. ROS: 101 wRC+
Secondbase (77, 21st) - Turang Last 14 days: 100 wRC+, Proj. ROS: 78 wRC+ (but 80-ish is fine with glove)
Thirdbase (94, 16th) - This is actually better than I expected, but Monasterio is also on fire... AM Last 30 days: 123 wRC+
Shortstop (83, 19th) - Adames Last 30 days: 93 wRC+, Proj. ROS: 102 wRC+
Leftfield (132, 2nd) - Excellent job Yeli
Centerfield (87, 24th) - Canha pick up allows Wiemer and Frelick to platoon. Wiemer vs LHP: 148 wRC+, Frelick vs RHP: 132 wRC+
Rightfield (74, 28th) - Frelick Last 30 days: 132 wRC+, Canha (see next) can play here when Frelick's in CF
DH (55, 30th) - Canha 2023: 107 wRC+, Last 30 days: 122 wRC+, Proj ROS: 109 wRC+

Thanks for staying positive. Though the moves weren't exciting, the pickups are still upgrades...and we didn't give up anything too big.

Bring on Craigtember and Craigust.

I'm happy with the trades the Brewers made at the deadline.  After the sweep by Atlanta, I didn't want the Brewers to go all in.  To win the division, we just needed to improve the absolute black holes in the lineup.  We did that, plus added another arm to the bullpen.  But there is no way we were going to add enough talent to match some of the top teams.  Once we get into the playoffs you at least have a shot to win it all, albeit a small one.

Not too concerned about what we gave up and that was partially offset by the Urias / Jackson trade.  Arnold said they would be responsible this trade deadline and he is a man of his words.  Good job overall.

2021 Brewers 66-45

2018 Brewers 65-51

2011 Brewers 65-50

2008 Brewers 64-51

1992 Brewers 58-49

1983 Brewers 61-46

I think there maybe one more I didn't check the other 80's teams.  Though there is a really long stretch of very bad from '93-'06.  I never want to go back to 90's and early 00's Brewers baseball.  That '92 team was basically the last year of a good team in Milwaukee for almost 20-years.

Posted

'83 is 41 years ago... '08 and '18 had mediocre to bad pitching staffs (and obviously '23 has a bad offense but that can change quickly....and it's easier to get lucky with a bad offense than a bad run prevention unit)
