Just under two months until the deadline. We're in first place and suddenly playing good ball with significant positive regression and injury returns seemingly forthcoming. At this point, it seems pretty unlikely we'll be sellers, and with the way things are trending, "buying" appears to be our likely course.

Should we indeed become "buyers" in what is almost certainly the final year of the Burnes/Woodruff/Adames window, what do you think we should primarily be in the market for?

My current trade deadline "shopping list" for the Brewers:

1) Outfielder/Right-handed masher:

We're set in LF with Yelich and Wiemer is on his way to solidifying one of the two remaining OF spots. Anderson is a solid option in RF and Frelick is on the mend and almost            certainly going to factor into the discussion during the stretch, however, with Taylor likely headed for TJ surgery, we're seemingly short of a veteran OFer. Particularly one                who hits from the right-side and doesn't have reverse splits.

To me, the perfect fit here would be Ramon Laureano from the A's. Currently sporting a 1.4 bWAR and slashing a sublime .300/.340/.520/.860 against LHP.

2) Designated Hitter:

We also need to figure out DH, a position that has really been holding us back offensively this year. Winker is currently on rehab and hit his first HR of the year today, but it's           still a major question whether he can return to something close to his career norms. Ruf was a great add from the right-side and an improvement over Voit, but he banged up         his knee pretty bad the other night. Who knows how long he'll be out for and how that will affect him. And then you have the true wild card, Keston Hiura. Hard not to be                   inspired by his contact gains in AAA, but, again, he's mashed there before and is currently on the IL.

Perhaps a reunion w/ Andrew McCutchen in in store? Having a resurgent season with a .816 OPS and getting on-base really well. Would cost less than Laureano as a "rental".

3) High-leverage Reliever:

Obviously, every contender is always in need of more relief pitching. We're clearly set at closer w/ Devin and Strzelecki/Payamps/Peguero have been really solid in their                    opportunities in high-leverage. Still, we could probably use one more reliever with great stuff to serve as a bridge to Devin. Abner Uribe could potentially fill this need without          having to look to outside the organization.

However, if Uribe doesn't prove ready for prime-time or one of our high-leverage guys gets injured, it might be worth getting involved in the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes.

Overall, I think these are pretty clearly our three biggest priorities right now. Starting pitching depth could still become a need, but we've had pretty good news on that front lately  with Miley, Lauer, and Woodruff. Gasser is spinning the ball better these days, too.

In terms of prospect capital, I think we should be willing to discuss all players not named Chourio, Quero, and Misiorowski....

Thoughts?

The best option in the OF is if the White Sox continue to falter and become sellers.  If they put Luis Robert out there then I would have to think about something like a Frelick++++ deal.  This would move Wiemer from CF to RF at a somewhat of a cost at defense in CF.

I think Laureano will be expensive as there will be other teams like the Yankees looking to get someone like him.  If the Cardinals continue to struggle and O'Neil comes back and is healthy then I think there is a fit there and the Yankees go for him instead of Laureano but that will cost them more.

For Laureano you are looking at a Gasser+ type of a deal.  I don't think Laureano would be worth that.  I think he turns into a Schoop type of a trade.

Lane Thomas is probably an easier get from the Nationals.  Thomas vs LHP: .360/.422/.627.

Another option against LHP would be Nick Senzel from the Reds who is hitting .455/.500/.659 against LHP.  This maybe the hardest trade if no one in the NL Central is walking away with the division.

I think another SP is probably another need if Woodruff is not able to come back.

We need a middle of the order bat bad. If it is a DH, OF, or 1B (move Rowdy to DH). At this point we have enough pitching when guys come back but a solid lefty option would be great. I am not for trading any of our top 12 or so prospects for a rental type and can't see a great fit for any other big bat.

My ideas

1) CJ Cron and Brad Hand for Carlos Rodriguez (OF) and Ethan Small

2) Mark Canha for Tyrone Taylor or a prospect like Logan Henderson

Neither Cron or Canha are auto mid order guys but both would have high upside and have huge effects vs. LHP. Hand gives us a better lefty option with late inning and playoff experience.

1. Burnes

2. Woodruff

3. Caratini

4. Adames

5. Anderson

6. Teheran

7. Tellez

8. Miley

… oh wait, not which Brewer players would be on other teams’ shopping lists, you meant if the Brewers are buyers!! Hahaha…

Would they trade really anything of value to add to this group? Like the year they added Scott Linebrink. I bet they mostly stand Pat if not sell.

They should do both this trade-deadline. Buy & Sell.

Have to sell Burnes just because of his being the number 1 player available and the bidding war that would ensue. They might even get a player that could help them in August/September like Ezekiel Duran from Texas, who i guess would likely be one of the bidders with deGrom having TJ.

The rest they could hold, unless the LAD make a big offer for Adames, who will start to regress to the mean over the next 7 weeks.

They have enough pitching with Miley, Woodruff, Peralta, Rea, Teheran, Houser and Gasser, who’s about ready for call up. Offense needs buttressed, and they have Urias they could trade for a less controlled better hitter and mid-level prospects they can also trade to improve the offense and possibly add a bullpen arm.

How far out there would it be to try and get Paul Goldschmidt? He only has a year and a half and would be exactly what we need. Like 1 percent chance?

Would Ryan McMahon be of interest, I would worry he will regress outside of Coors. He can play 3 positions, has 4+ years of a respectable contract, and likely wouldn't cost an arm and leg. However he has been mostly average until this year.

Any chance Jose Ramirez could become available and we could afford him?

How much would Eloy Jimenez cost, as a DH he could have lots of value for us. He isn't my favorite player but could have a lower trade value based on his past couple years and injuries.

Are Brent Rooker or Ryan Noda options or are they to young/cheap and controllable to the A's to be traded.

Rooker and Noda are unlikely unless the A's are really not sold on them at all

Ramirez just signed a long term extension with the Guardians, below market rate because he wants to stay there

Jimenez is interesting, if injury free a big upgrade but also the White Sox have been pulling back in that division and may not want to cash in just yet

A respectable contract of 4+ years is likely to be quite costly for McMahon

And as for Goldy, he'd be awesome but the cost is a big one. However he could instantly transform this team. Instantly. Yet would I trade a Misiorowski level talent? Probably not

Can't see the division-leading Brewers dealing Burnes mid-season after the Hader trade, unless they were really blown away. Same with Adames, especially if he does regress to the mean.

Like if Baltimore offered Rutchsman/Rodriguez/Westburg for Burnes, then I would be thinking about such a deal, but otherwise... hard pass, talk in the offseason.

What would the Red Sox want for a half a year of Justin Turner? He is crushing LHP.

Welcome to the site.

I’d think someone in that 12-17 range (Jarvis, Zamora, Wood, Adams) or so on the BF.com Top 20 would probably be needed to win the Turner sweepstakes if the Red Sox put him on the market.

This seems reasonable, he can fill in at first as well as DH-ing and he's got that big streak in him. Was huge in second half last season for the Dodgers

Turner would be great and I agree that he would only cost a mid level prospect or two. However I doubt the Red Sox trade him for that being a couple games over .500.

Trading Burnes is very unlikely but I could see trading Adames. Adames is a leader but also hitting terribly. If we could get 2 solid prospects for him and Turang comes back and plays more like the first 30-40 games it could work. Still probably a risky move but there could be addition by subtraction and improve our system.

Would a package like Gasser, Guillarte, and Matt Wood be enough for Eloy Jimenez. I would prefer not trading our top 6 or 7 prospects for him but he will have some meaningful value.

Jimenez is unlikely to get such a price due to limited defensive value and his significant injury risk, and I'm unsure the Brewers are trading Gasser other than for a pitcher, it's their biggest area of need development wise at the moment

Guillarte and Wood aren't enough on their own, either. I'm not sure he quite fits in this Brewers roster

Gasser has a better chance of being called up down the stretch to help the Brewers this season than to be included in a deadline trade - he's essentially in season 2 of his minor league career and pitching pretty darn well in AAA right now as a 24 yr old.  There's tremendous organizational value there.

If I am trading with the White Sox I am going big and going after Luis Robert.  I would be fine trading Frelick, Black + for Robert.  The only untouchables in the Brewers minor league system to me are Chourio, Quero, Misiorowski and Carlos F. Rodriguez.  Everyone else I would trade for the right player.

I think something like Frelick, Black, Gasser and Small/Mendez gets you really close value wise for Robert.  The problem is with the White Sox do they believe they are contenders still or are they willing to trade off some pieces?

I wouldn't be surprised to see more contender to contender trades this deadline.  Unless the White Sox and Cardinals decide to blow things up there isn't much out there from the obvious sellers (Royals, Nationals, A's and Rockies) in terms of impact players.  The Mariners could become sellers but I am not sure who become available if they decided to sell and if there would be anyone that teams would be interested in buying that the Mariners would sell on (Suarez, Wong, Hernandez and Pollock).

I wouldn't be surprised if the Brewers and Dodgers restart trade talks for Adames.  Something like Frasso, Graterol and Kopp to the Brewers for Adames and Brosseau/Small/Milner.  Adames fixes the SS issue for the Dodgers and they get a pick of Brosseau/Small/Milner as the second piece.  I think the Dodgers would go with Brosseau as that helps their bench out a little bit more but I could see them adding Small or Milner to lengthen out their bullpen.  The Brewers get bullpen help with Graterol the MLB piece coming back with Frasso and Kopp being the prospects in return.  Frasso and Kopp would help the Brewers minor league pitching depth.  Frasso becomes the best pitcher in the Brewers minor league system with Kopp being the 4th or 5th best.

If the Brewers could pull off the Graterol for Adames swap and get Robert from the White Sox that would be a rather big improvement for the Brewers overall.  Robert fixes the LHP issues the Brewers have been suffering from.  Graterol could also fill in the 8th inning and move everyone else down an inning.  I think this would give the Brewers the best chance to win now and in the future.  These moves also allow the Brewers to keep Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta and to just get draft picks for Burnes and Woodruff after the '24 season.  Next year the Brewers would be in pool B for comp balance picks and then in '25 they would be in pool A.  Assuming both Burnes and Woodruff are offered QO's and they sign with another team the Brewers could have three picks after the 1st round in the '25 draft.

That would be poetic irony and an apt penance for using us to sign a bigger LAD deal a couple years back. 😂

I'd be fine with trading Adames for the return Nate mentioned. My only concern is, after the last deadline, would a # of the Brewer players respond with their own little mental & emotional "sit down" in response to losing their leader & the guy who puts the wedge of cheese on the HR hitters' head.

On the other hand, I'm not going that high for Robert.

We need to add anyone that can hit,  position is irrelevant.

Robert would be ok but I would be hesitant to trade 4 important prospects for him. He has yet to play 100 games and already has 90ks this year. He is controllable and is hitting well but there is way to much inconsistency to pay a big price. Especially with Mitchell, Weimer, Frelick, and Chourio all able to play center.

I would prefer pursuing a tradition 3/4 hitter if we are going to give up a massive haul.

Posted

We're not going anywhere adding just 1 hitter , we need multiple hitters . Don't want to give up that many assets for one guy ! . Gasser looking good as of late , might want to be patient with him .

Turner has a 13.5 million dollar player option for 2024; which means he’s not coming to Milwaukee

You want one I'll give you one.

Jorge Soler from Miami.  Big LHP killer.

Probably swap some ML talents along with prospect talents to make this work. We'd be looking for some of our regulars like Urias/Anderson/Adames/Winker/Teheran/Miley to work around with whose higher value at that time intrigues Miami to replace with.

Maybe the landing place for Frelick.

Atm doesn't make sense for Miami. But If I'm the Brewers he's the RHB needed in this lineup over the LHB Winker.
