Tyrone Taylor's value is actually rock solid. Been above average (100+ wRC+) hitter every season of his career with solid power numbers and above average defense everywhere in the OF. What you're seeing right now is a huge regression to the mean with how awful he started the year (due to not being fully recovered from his injury).

Wiemer is going to have to look like a major league hitter at some point.

Agree to disagree. Taylor is the definition of "just a guy" IMO. I don't believe he is a regular starter on a contending team. A 4th or 5th OF'er, maybe, but nevertheless very replaceable...

I'm not even a Wiemer guy, but I would take his upside over Taylor 10 times out of 10.

Sure, Wiemer's upside is higher, but what he is right now is borderline unplayable and there's a lot of risk with him.

Meanwhile, you've got Taylor giving you above average production on offense and defense.

Since it seems they are going to need a pitcher for Houser’s spot  I’m thinking Gasser?

Or Rea/Junk gets the call on Saturday and Black gets the 40 man spot. But I agree your scenario seems far more likely.

Postseason Roster Rules & Eligibility

Definition

In a typical season, any player who is on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list as of 11:59 p.m. ET on Aug. 31 is eligible for the postseason.

Those on the restricted list at that point are also eligible if they haven't been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs during that season. (All players who have served a suspension for PEDs in a given season are ineligible for postseason play that year.)

A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible.

Postseason roster rules

Teams submit a 26-man roster (it was 25, prior to 2020) prior to each round of the postseason comprised of postseason-eligible players. A club may request permission from the Commissioner's Office to replace a player who is injured during the course of a series, but that player is then ineligible for the rest of that round and the subsequent round, if there is one. A pitcher may be replaced only by another pitcher, and a position player only by another position player.

Teams carry extra players throughout the postseason in the event of injuries, and those players, as well as players on the injured list, can be in the dugout during games, within reason.

With the open 40 man roster spot do  wonder if the Brewers fill it today to add another player to postseason eligibility. It's pretty easy to add another guy from the organization to the postseason if injury happens but might as well fill the 40 man at August 31.

Will we find out September call ups today?

I'd probably pay attention to the lineups in Nashville, but Counsell likely won't announce anything until the latest moment, so probably tomorrow with rumours on twitter today?

Actually on second thought, to be post season eligible they'll have to be registered today, so I'm guessing they will!

They probably need to wait until the waiver claims are awarded too.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

If it is a guy like Toro/Miller/Rea or another guy that has been up and down then not likely. Not expecting it, but if it is a Black or Gasser might as well add them to the 40 man today.

I'd much rather see Black or Gasser than Josh Donaldson.

Heck, I’d rather see Chourio if the Brewers are gonna do something crazy. Donaldson would be a gross addition.

With the recent offseason releases and free agents, including Miley declining his option, the 40-man roster is currently at 34. Ashby is still technically on the 60-day DL, but he will have to be added back shortly (I think tomorrow), so the roster will grow to 35.

JC Mejia is on the restricted list due to his 162 game suspension given last Sept 20th. He will not count against the 40 man roster during his suspension. The Brewers will need to tender/non-tender him this offseason, though not sure of the downside of tendering him a contract since he does not get paid during this time. Since this is his 2nd suspension, they may decide to non-tender him.

Other possible non-tender decisions are Woodruff, Toro, and Tellez.  I think the other arby eligible players are likely to be kept (complete arby eligible list is below per MLBTR):

The Brewers also need to decide on Mark Canha's team option.

Wiemer to me could use a full year at AAA to work on his plate discipline.  Right now he makes Carlos Gomez look disciplined by comparison.  A taste of MLB might have been good for him but IMO circumstances caused a premature MLB season.   If he can figure out a more stable approach at the plate he can be a player of consequence both offensively and defensively.  Very good potential in terms of power, speed and D.   But it has to still materialize.
