Maybe we could wait more then 12 days before we decide that a trade is a disaster and a proven veteran with the highest defensive runs saved in the majors at first base should be released?

Ps it also seems like Santana has hit into some bad luck with the Brewers to me.

It’ll never be a disaster, there are long odds the player they traded away even makes the major leagues, let alone become a contributor.
Rather, the question is does Carlos Santana make the Brewers a better team. So far, through two weeks the answer is no. Will that change over the final 40+ games? Santana hasn’t been good in years so I would guess this would also be no.

Another overlooked play that lead to the win was Turang not getting doubled off on that rocket by Caratini in the 10th.

I know you are supposed to freeze on line drives but in that spot it’s easy to forget that the SS us behind you……..he made a veteran play there and if he hesitates for 1 more second he is going to be out.

With the production they were getting out of Miller and Rowdy I think getting him made us better. Time will tell but it certainly was a move worth making. Imo

His numbers both offensively and defensively with the Pirates were better then we were getting…….so even a washed up Santana was outplaying what we were getting at first.

I mean nobody thought we were getting a huge addition……just a veteran who could be an incremental improvement.

It was a gamble. Didn’t really cost them much, so it’s low stakes. But that .502 OPS in 45 PAs suggests their roll of the dice came up snake eyes and did not improve the team. Time will tell if the heat of a pennant race can spur Santana to outplay his recent statistical production.

Again….way too soon to tell……you can find those kind of stretches for almost any hitter over that short sample.

But I agree it was a low risk attempt……

Give Santana some time. He’s not washed up. He’ll come up with several key hits before the season is through.

CC just said he thinks 90% of the league gets doubled off on that Turang play.

It was the first thing he mentioned

Technically he said 95 - at least that's the quote McCalvy has.

Anyone can get hot... We gave Jon Singleton less, and he's just had a multi homer game and looked hot with the Astros.

It's too small a sample size but I'd definitely say both Santana and Canha early on (more Canha) hit into some hard luck. A foot either side and Santana doubles in Contreras with a rocket in the first today for instance

Also I remember something Adam Frazier said about Santana making the rookies hit better last year when he joined the mariners. Said he's an incredible hitting coach still playing and was heavily involved in their hot offensive streak. *Cough* Brice Turang has looked good recently hasn't he?

I’ve been a huge Canha/Santana critic, but it looks like Canha can be a late-inning closer. Need a hit in the 10th? He’s your guy. Still don’t want him in the field with the other outfielders the Brewers have. And maybe, just maybe, if the two bats the Brewers acquired weren’t 16 for 85 with an OPS around .500, they wouldn’t need the extra-inning heroics.

Intangibles. Exactly what I was hoping the Brewers would acquire at the deadline.

Brewers are now 5-5 this year when surrendering six runs.

Seeing this comment reminds me how sad I am that Baseball Reference moved most of the scoring information that I used as a quick way to get data like this behind the Stathead pay wall.
