I think it's about pitch count, not innings. Pitchers usually get to around 100 in the 6th inning.

I think Counsell knows as much about hitters and pitchers splits as fans do.

That may be true, but what he does with that data can also be questionable (re: Keston Hiura last year).

Peralta is 25th in the league in pitches per start but only 67th in innings per start. If he could become just a bit more economical it would help narrow that gap. Regardless, he certainly has been elite lately (although the competition the last 3 starts hasn't been much).
