DSL1 falls 3-2 in extra innings with Yophery Rodriguez (1-3, BB) and Luis Garcia (1-3, 2B, BB) both reaching twice while Eric Prado worked around 7 H | 2 BB to only allow 1 R over 4 IP with 4 K. Gabriel Colmenarez also pitched well with 4 IP | 1 R | 0 H | 3 BB | 3 K.

DSL2 loses too, 4-0, with Pedro Ibarguen (1-2, BB) the only batter to reach multiple times while Aneuris Rodriguez struck out six and walked none over his four frames while allowing three hits and one earned run.

You'll find the 'Audio Rewind' from Sounds announcer, Jeff Hem, during this past week's Indianapolis series HERE (Jim posted in the Nashville Sounds running thread). I highly recommend, at a minimum, listen to the thoughts of manager Rick Sweet. Fantastic interview. He reflects on last year's Sounds players (and this years at times) in the Bigs and the 2022 91 win season. SO many players from that team are in the Big Leagues in 2023 and having success. He talks about Dorrian and Gasser. Just choice stuff. Last year's Sounds team was just so so special. What a fabulous run. It ended one game too early in a truly stupid Playoff format. That, of course, is no longer the format.

I see so much Matt Olson in that frame, stance and swing. Hopefully he continues to produce.

How was Reece Walling acquired. A high school UDFA?

how does that happen?

Well, first, consider the number of International Minor League Free Agents signed each year. Many are 16 and 17 years old. This doesn't pertain to the States and the MLB Draft, obviously, where residency or attending institutions hold sway (US, Canada, Puerto Rico or US Territories).

As to the MLB draft, consider a player who has a college scholarship has to weigh the scholarship versus, in most cases, only being eligible after their junior season - OR having turned 21 years of age. Of course, a Ju-Co route would have meant Walling was eligible the following year. But, in general, any high school player who has graduated high school is draft or sign-eligible. If they dropped out, they must have spent at minimum one year post-drop out before being considered eligible.

So, how did it happen? In Walling's case, he weighed his options and chose to become a professional baseball player in the lowest ranks as opposed to collegiate options. He had originally committed (publicly declared at least) to play at Washington State down @ Pullman. He was considered the best outfielder in the state of Washington in 2022.

He opted for the Brewers over his university commitment. We may have quietly given him a signing bonus of up to $125,000 (hard to know how much), as the signing rules loosened in 2022.

Thank you.  I guess I always assumed a HS player good enough to be drafted - was drafted or went to college - and most who didn't go in the draft assumed they had to go to JuCo/College to build up draft stock.

Is this rare? Or rare for the Brewers - as I don't recall seeing that before. Most UDFA are JuCo or college seniors.

Strikeouts raining down in AZ tonight as Daniel Corniel (8 K | 5 IP), Manuel Rodriguez (6 K | 3 IP) and Bayden Root (2 K | 1 IP) combined for 16 punch outs in a 2-1 Brewers victory.

Cooper Pratt (2-4, SB), Juan Baez (1-3, BB), Alejandro Rodriguez (1-3, 2B, BB), and Miguel Briceno (2-4) all reached twice on offense.

The last I checked a week or so ago (Baseball America) there were 5 UDFA HS signings in 2023. So definitely not the prevailing or dominant UDFA portion. But, certainly on par with JuCo if a little bit less.

Big 'W' to grab one back head-to-head vs the ACL Reds. Get further separation atop their ACL division while they're at it. Thanks for the update!

Josh Adamczewski is making his debut and batting leadoff for the ACL Brewers.

0-for-3, 2 K. He'll look to bounce back as the week progresses.

Go back and look at how many really good to great players were drafted in the 21st round or later.

This guy kinda reminds me of Mark Grace(the swing if he hunched over like Kirk Gibson and everyone from the 80s).

But there's a guy in pretty much every round from 20-40 who's been a really good player.

Here's a link. Not sure it's the most comprehensive link, but it gives some examples.
I'm sure the list of guys who rose to become at least valuable prospects is much longer for each round;

The draft used to be 40 rounds, and before that 50 rounds so yeah it would be really rare, now at 20 rounds I think you'll see this more often.
