It may have been a vanilla shot, but it was a shot none the less.  It was a dig for sure, if he meant it to sound like it did, I don't know, but I know this:

I will enjoy rooting against the guy.  Screw Counsell, he is now the enemy.

Rooting against him is 1 thing. Hating someone though, just because they took the $$ to go to a different team, is immature imo. All.of us would have made the same decision he did. I take sports just as serious as most die hard fans do, but I also realize that it's ONLY a sport, and nothing to hate people over. Lol

Win or lose, our lives will STILL go on. Lol trust me.

Not all of us would make the same decision he made. Someone could offer to double my salary and I would not move to Chicago. My wife and I are very happy where we live, while money drives some people it doesn't drive all people

I agree that $$ isn't everything, but that still doesn't make me believe that you wouldn't make the same decisionhe did. Lol unless you're in that situation, you can't honestly know that you wouldn't.

He left for 25% more than what the Brewers offered. I would have gladly accepted being the highest paid manager of the team I grew up rooting for. It'd be different if he didn't grow up in Milwaukee or rooting for the Brewers but he did so it's very easy to relate to him in that sense since those same things apply to myself. I love living in Wisconsin so a chance to be the highest paid manager in the game for the team I grew up rooting for in a place I love living, there's no chance I'd pass that up.

I'm not sure why people are upset at Coun$ell. I've watched him for years and I think I know the man pretty well. He doesn't care about money. He's got plenty in his bank account. More important, he's way too loyal to take the job with the Mets.

I completely understand your point, and I'm loyal like that too. But, I'm pretty confident that you don't make millions per year, so unless you're in the same position, I stand by my statement, you can't possibly truly know if you would or wouldn't make the same decision. Plus, pretty sure your wife wouldn't be happy if you turned down extra millions. Lol

I might not make millions but doubling my yearly salary would change my life significantly and I would rather stay in Wisconsin than go to Chicago and double my salary. It's just a pet peeve of mine when people say you can't blame him because we would all make the same choice when I know that simply isn't true

I don't mind that he went for the money.  But 1) to go to the Cubs. That is pretty rotten. And 2) his self-justification that he was helping other managers by raising the pay-bar, but in the process getting one fired. He really showed his true character with that one.

I understand. You're in the extreme minority though, of people who supposedly wouldn't.

Any of us being in the same position as Counsell, and making the same decision he did is irrelevant. Any of us making that decision would know that one of the trade-offs is the love and good will of Brewers fans. I doubt any of us have ill-will toward Craig Counsell, human being... But Craig Counsell, the traitor that left his childhood team for it's biggest rival? That is anathema to sports fans! He deserves all of the derision that comes with it. Why? Because it's just sports. It's meant to be fun and entertaining, and having heels to root against is awesome.

He definitely didn't have any control though, with what team was gonna offer him that kind of $$. It just so happened to end up being the Cubs. So can't really fault him for that really.

To each their own I guess. Lol 🤷‍♂️

One thing is for certain - it will be fun watching Cubs pay CC $8M a year for a couple seasons after they have to fire him because the Cubs just can't hang with a young Brewers core.

Or not fire him and scratch their heads as to why CC won so much with the Brewers but can’t seem to get the Cubs over the hump.

kind of like Bears fans trying to figure out how the packers seemingly did it again with Jordan Love…..following Rodgers…..and Favre……lol

Well the Mets offered less than what the Brewers did.

I'd argue it's far easier to take less money when you're going to make millions a year either way. Especially when you've already made millions. Being set for life gives you the ability to prioritize other aspects of life.

This has always been my biggest complaint. Dude negotiated for a job that wasn't open then tried to spin it as some sort of altruistic decision. It was a totally greedy thing to do. Own it and accept being being viewed as the villain with both your former team and your colleagues.

That would make him back into a hero though.  Bleeding the rival cubs for top dollar while running them into the ground.  A secret agent behind enemy lines.  If only...

I never spent much time considering this part of the decision. It is a little underhanded. I can't imagine that David Ross doesn't have hard feelings. But it's also kind of the nature of coaching/managing high-level sports.

Getting fired is the nature of coaching/managing. Taking a job that isn't open isn't. Off the top of my head the only time I remember it happening was Kansas City negotiating with Dayton Moore. Even then KC had no intention of keeping Baird so while it wasn't technically open it still wasn't a secret. This was Counsell taking a job that wasn't open from a guy who wouldn't have been fired had he not taken the job behind his back.

David Ross was pure class about how all that went down.

His bizarre rant about the Brewers roof, on the other hand . . .

This isn't the first time the Cubs have done it.  They went and hired Joe Maddon while having Rick Renteria under contract as manager and had promised him that he'd be back as manager the next season.  Scummy organization.

Guy was masquerading as a Cubbie his entire life. Good riddance and will thoroughly enjoy every Brewers W over the Cubs for the rest of his tenure, however long it lasts.
