too bad they couldnt trade him for a lottery ticket

Why would anyone trade so much as a single used baseball for a guy who likely won't pitch a single inning, make $11 million, and be a free agent when he is healthy enough to pitch again? It's worse than trading for nothing from their perspective.

He most definitely is cheap and has gotten increasingly so the last few years.

The Brewers two highest payrolls in franchise history were the last two years.

This is literally impossible to accomplish while being increasingly cheap.

He most definitely is cheap and has gotten increasingly so the last few years. After the Yelich contract we haven't given any sort of big or even medium sized long term contracts to anyone.

Just look at this first base situation as a great example of being ultra cheap. We traded for a cheap first baseman in Bauers that can't hit which will more than likely even take us out of the running for a guy like Santana who won't exactly break the bank.

Nobody wants to hear this and a few will lob insults my way but I expect the 24 payroll to be at least 20 million less than the one we ended last season with. Attanasio has taken this franchise as far as he can financially. He was certainly an upgrade over the latter years of the Selig ownership but he just doesn't have the money to have us even competitive financially.

That’s a baseball decision to trade for Jake Bauers. If the owner is that involved in baseball ops that he’s dictating individual players to acquire via trade Heaven help us.

What is more probably true than not, is the owner sets the budget and the front office builds a team within that budget. Now any calls that the owner is cheap aren’t really fair. First, the Brewers annual payroll when they’ve been competitive with this owner has always hovered in that 90-100 million dollar range. Second, there’s nothing the owner can do when the new CBA all but eliminates compensation for losing free agents, salaries boom to where even mediocre free agents command $10 million dollars a year, and the pre-arbitration contract extension basically dies out with the players.

What the Brewers are in is the downside to a success cycle. They built it up, took their shots, now with free agency breaking up their team they have to rearrange and shuffle the pieces and start the cycle all over again.

What does that really say though.  Salaries have gone through the roof, you simply can't compare the last two years of payroll to other years when the cost of players keeps going up and up and up.  Of course they have had the highest payrolls the last two years because of that simple little fact.

I get your point and and we have done a really good job of putting a quality product on the field . But , how many World series have we won or even gone to ? How many times have we been bounced in the first round ?

When was the last time when in a playoff chase that we acquired a difference making player to put us over the top ? If you say Cahna and Santana, we are thinking differently on what a difference maker is ! If there was a sport that needs a salary cap and floor its baseball !

Canha and Santana literally were difference makers for this team's offense. Just compare the team's offensive numbers before the trade and after the trade. Who cares about whether it's a big name? Plus those types of guys tend to empty out your farm system and severely affect your ability to win a WS in the long term, doubly so for a small market such as Milwaukee.

It is so incredibly hard to win a WS. Despite their inability to get to that end goal, this franchise has been right there competitively with the big markets since Stearns and Arnold took over.

Have Brewers revenues gone through the roof at the same rate that player salaries have?

Or is it primarily driven by a few teams at the top of the market with large revenue advantages over much of the league?

Spotrac has the Brewers 19th in payroll for each of 2021, 2022 ($30M jump) and 2023. At worst it looks like they’ve been maintaining the status quo relative to the rest of the league.

What level of spending do people believe would be more appropriate for the 30th largest market?

To pass the White Sox for 15th they would have had to spend an extra $40M last year. An extra $65M would have got them over the Cubs for 11th.

The Brewers won the 5th most games last year. The team with the 5th highest payroll (PHI) spent an extra $120M.

Well, the Brewers thought there was a chance. They waited until the very last minute to non-tender him to see if they could work a trade.

For all the vitriol directed toward Mark, he has never given the impression that he's that involved in the day to day operations. Hader wasn't his call. I doubt any of these other decisions were his call. That's the GM/PBO's job, and he's seemed pretty content to let them do that.

If you're upset that he is not personally funding the Brewers payroll, that's not how baseball works, other than maybe Cohen. As long as we're in a world where every team gets to keep their TV revenue, smaller markets will continue to be at a huge disadvantage.

Or they waited until the last minute for some other reason. The fact remains nobody was willing to give up anything for him and we were forced to let him go for nothing. That's a pretty good indication nobody was willing to trade anything for him.

I can't help but laugh when I see the thread title, "Tender Decisions." Sounds like I'm deciding which puppy to take home.

Yeah, for me Tender Decisions are BBQ or ranch to dip them in. Maybe a good honey mustard.

Do I marinate that tough piece of meat or smoke it low and slow?
