One of the weird things about baseball is that it strides the "totally random" and "analytically logical" lines so nicely, that we're always going tempted to graft huge narratives onto the playoffs. We need cogency and answers, but the sample size really can't provide it, so it's an awkward fit.

The Brewers haven't played very well tonight. Some of it is randomness. Some of it is maybe nerves. Some of it is just lapses of concentration and focus. We're not "cursed." The trajectory of the moment will not be the trajectory of forever.

This team doesn't quit, and it won't. I don't know if they'll win, but I'd bet on them not going out quietly in this series.

Rightly so.  All this "just get in the playoffs and get hot" garbage is wearing thin.  It's not as random as this board would like it be.

Come on. Chourio and Adames failed to make crucial plays. Don't make it complicated.

I don't believe Adames would have gotten that out even if he had fielded it cleanly...

I just don't think there was any way Adames was getting an out on that no matter what. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't have the split screen and didn't see how close the runner was to second. That just looked like an infield hit all the way.

Yup. Even if they lose this game they still have another one.

I'm not one to do so but I understand those that do.  Fans only have so many ways to voice displeasure.

1 playoff win in the last 10 games just kinda makes me want to give up

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Mets bringing in a reliever next inning, that is where Brewers will comeback.

Unfortunately you'd have far more money if you had bet on them going quietly in their first playoff series every year since 2018.

Yeah that would have been a real tough play

Sometimes they just hit em where you aren't.

Don't worry, it's just random baseball stuff.

105 pitches for Severino. Hit 97.7mph to the last batter. Retired the last 8 batters in order.

We’ll never know if Peralta would have blown up in the 5th or 6th innings, but the difference in managerial approach here was stark. Tip the cap to the Mets. Too bad for us.

Gotta find a spark.

I didn't realize it was a 6 inning series.

Fair enough.  I think it's a big-time clown move.

Fortunately it wasn't a lot of people.

One of the weird things about human psychology is we think the way things are going is the way things will continue to go. That's just not the case. Those who can predict those turnarounds make bank, but continually betting WITH the trendline is what costs $$$ long-term. That's as true in baseball as it is in poker and the stock market.

We're all so emotionally invested in this thing we can't control. That's part of what makes it fun! And, believe me, I feel everyone's frustration deeply. I'm coping by being weirdly philosophical on a message board. I guess what I'm saying is: the pain is what it is, but it's not a portent of the future. We all detach from the pain in our own way, but today has no impact on tomorrow. Let's get some runs and remind ourselves why we're here.

I see it as something that is justified for things that relate to poor hustle and poor effort.

Not so much for physical mistakes that happened in an earnest effort to do their job.

On one hand, you can attribute the scoreline to some bad luck and shoddy defense.

On the other hand, when you allow so many baserunners and balls in play, you're bound to give up some runs.

I don't know if I would have allowed Freddy to face the Mets lineup a third time, but I'm curious whether the choice of relievers matched the degree the game and the series was on the line.

Fair enough, but the unfortunate truth is you never know how long that turnaround will take.

Cub fans and Red Sox fans that were experiencing it 80 years ago, for example, never got to see it in their lifetimes.

I remember being 28 and watching the Packers win the Super Bowl and telling my buddy to savor it because we didn't know how long it would take to see it again, if ever. Now I'm 42 and still haven't.

In the case of the Brewers, none of us have seen it in our lifetimes.

I think  there are times it's fine.

Today wasn't one of them.
