I’d love to hear from forum members their thoughts on this topic

I assume Adames is gone - too expensive

Sanchez probably won’t be back

Devin Williams may be traded

Montas is a free agent - unlikely to be retained

What is Bauers status?

Others?

I think payroll is a big part of that discussion.  Per MA's words I would assume payroll is no better than flat with a good chance it gets reduced with the lower gates and TV revenue in question.   They are going to have to do more with less.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hoskins moves on.  Not saying he will, just wouldn't surprise me.  Other than that, Hasse is probably moving on.  Wouldn't be surprised to see some of the bullpen arms moved, like Milner.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Haase is under team control for 3 more seasons. I imagine he's almost a complete lock to be the Brewers backup catcher next year.

Per Cot's...

Guarantees ($78.25M): Yelich ($24M), Hoskins ($18M), Williams ($10.5M), Peralta ($8M), Rea ($5.5M), Woodruff ($5M), Chourio ($4M), Ashby ($3.25M)

Buyouts ($3.5M): don't know if they count on the 2024 or 2025 payroll, but Montas ($2M), Miley ($1.5M)

Arbitration (???): number is parentheses is 2024's number so some degree of raise will occur based on performance, Civale ($4.9M), Milner ($2.05M), Payamps ($1.65M), Bauers ($1.35M), Wilson (1.025M), Haase ($1M). Out of those guys I would guess only Civale, Payamps and Haase are back for OD 2025.

It is also Contreras, Megill and Mears first years of arbitration. Would guess Contreras will probably come in around the $5.25M that Will Smith got in his first Arby's trip.

Everyone else is pre-Arby's so essentially $750-800K based on service time.

There's no way Hoskins is going anywhere. He's got a guaranteed 1 year/18M contract from the Brewers if he wants it and he's not going to get that on the open market.

Here's MLBTR's 2025 Arb estimates for the Brewers

Hoby Milner (5.068): $2.7MM
Aaron Civale (5.058): $8MM
Devin Williams (5.056): $7.7MM (Brewers hold $10.5MM club option/$250K buyout)
Jake Bauers (4.084): $2.3MM
Bryse Wilson (4.036): $1.5MM
Joel Payamps (4.027): $2.8MM
Eric Haase (3.159): $1.8MM
William Conteras (3.112): $7.6MM
Nick Mears (3.022): $900K
Trevor Megill (3.002): $2MM

Will be back - Civale, Payamps, Haase, Contreras, Mears, Megill

Questionable - Milner, Bauers, Wilson (could see these guys being tendered and traded, non-tendered, or tendered)

Traded - Williams

I'd like to see Bryse come back. He eats up innings. I hope they can work it out.

I second this. I'd probably rather have Bryse at 1.5 than Milner at nearly twice that, despite Milner being lefty. I like Hoby, but he seems like "just a guy."

Just seems like he will be an odd man out. Rea can do exactly what Wilson does but do it at a better level.

The 40-man stands at 46 (39 + 7 on the 60-day IL). You also have more than 30 minor leaguers who are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, and there are 5+ who should be considered for protection, particularly Henderson and Patrick. Basically, there are 48-49 guys fighting for 40 slots. My thoughts:

FA's: Miley, Montas, Sánchez
Traded: Williams
Non-tendered: Milner, Bauers
DFA 2 of: Capra, Jay, Hicklen

If only 2 are DFA'd and only Henderson is added that would leave the roster at 39. Space for a trade or a Rule 5 aquisition maybe.

MLB trade rumors must have screwed up Williams arbitration estimate. No way he only makes 7.7 after earning 7 million in 2024. Risky move if the Brewers decline the option and go to arbitration.

Wilson is a nice guy to have in the regular season. Figure they work something out prior to tender deadline.

I would tend to agree that Hoskins is back but anything is possible after they were able to dump Jackie Bradley a few years back.

There are a number of fringe guys that can be removed at any time if somebody better is added including Hicklen, Capra, Collins, Dunn, Herget, Zastryzny and Jay.

I'd expect non-tender on Milner.  Wilson is cheap enough that he's probably worth retaining.  May depend on whether Joe Ross is re-signed.  I'd love to have him back.

This may not go over well but I don't even care what they get back for Devin he CANNOT come back.

Of course he can come back…….they certainly aren’t going to give him away.

But my guess is they will look to move him for a prospect or 2 that they like……save the money and use it elseware.

Technically he can come back but I don't want him to. If they can get something good that would be terrific but I don't really care what the return is.

I could be wrong …..not that it matters because it won’t happen……but now that Devin is under a team option……i am under the impression that they can either pick up the option or he becomes a free agent……I don’t believe they could just forego the option and retain him on arbitration.

Like I said I might be wrong but it doesn’t matter…..they will pick up the option and either trade him or keep him.

As has been established many, many times, it is a good thing you are not running the team's personnel department.

Williams doesn’t have 6 years of service time. So if the Brewers figured he’d make less via arbitration, they could potentially decline the team option and tender him a contract for 2025 and go to arbitration. (The optics on that are probably so bad it’s a non-starter).

Either way I agree with you they’ll bring him back. I’m not so sure he gets traded either, despite having the worst game of his career and the worst time for the 2024 team, he’s a really good pitcher and they won’t just give him away if nobody is willing to trade them players that make the team better.

Tender and trade: Hoby, Bauers, Bryse (trade early in offseason), Devin

DFA/release: Jay, Capra

Keep: P (16) Ashby, Civale, Gasser, Hall, Huddy, Koenig, Mears, Megill, Myers, Payamps, Peguero, Peralta, Rea, CarRod, Uribe, Woody (Devin would be 17 if not able to trade until later in offseason) Offense (15): Contreras, Black, Haase, Quero, Dunn, Hoskins, Monasterio, Ortiz, Turang, Chourio, Frelick, Yeli, Perkins, Mitchell, Collins

?: Hicklen, Herget, Zastryzny, Baukauskas

40 man adds: Henderson, Patrick, EMJ, Shane Smith ??? Wes Clarke (if EMJ is on 40 man I would guess no Clarke but he would be iffy to get picked in rule 5)

40 man spot out of camp: Yoho?

So I have 31 locks with 4 minor leaguers and 4 maybe guys I would like to keep but won't lose any sleep if they get DFA'd, you could maybe even add Mone, Dunn, or Collins to that list depending on how much you like any of those guys. Add in some guys like Black or Peguero (among others) who could get traded and eventually Gasser to the 60 man. There should be a little wiggle room as long as we don't add to many 40 mans in trades.
