The inability to go six innings is a fallacy. We don't have any big time inning eating guys in our rotation but our guys would be going 6 innings more often if our offense wasn't so bad. Patrick would have gone 6 today if we were down 2-0 or up 3/4 to 0 but because it was a 1-0 game he got pulled.

Patrick just started his 6th game in 26 days (4 days' rest for each of last 5 starts).

Do we think this is the optimal approach with him - traditional rest, short starts, don't face lineup 3 times?

Or, once Quintana and Woodruff are back, should Patrick go 6 innings and face a lineup a 3rd time by giving him more rest between starts?

I don't think any SP this day in age should be making 5 starts in a row on 4 days rest (will be 6 in his next start as the off day will be Henderson's start) especially a rookie SP who due to the minor league schedule is only accustomed to pitch on 4 days rest once a month at most.

It's just how the cards have gone. He had a start bumped up because Peralta had the groin thing. Had another bumped up because of Quintana's shoulder. Don't think this was planned and I don't think the shorter leash has to do with the 4 days rest. More just a matter of him not getting any run support so Murphy is going to really protect him third time through the order if it's a very close game.

A Brief Diversion: I listen to the games on MLB.com audio.  There is a frequent MLB advert/quiz about baseball slang.  Has ANYONE ever EVER heard the term "Oppo-Taco" (referring to an opposite field HR) in real life (by anyone other than Joe Buck, whom I confess to dislike irrationally)?

I have been listening a lot over the weekend and I think the radio broadcast (from what MLB provides me) is about 6 commercials. It's not all that different from TV but a few of the "punch lines" get really loud.

I'm just glad Murphy wasn't listening to my thoughts during this One. Honestly, after Patrick threw his first ball of the ball game I was calling for RHP Nick Mears to warm up. Gotta see the forest for the trees. Mearsy had that coveted one game off, well, two games ago. He's ready to pitch nine after yesterday's mini meltdown. I think missing that opportunity was the story of this game. Not pitching Uribe and Megill for the 6th time in 9 games. Gotta use Mears for the weapon he is. He can go through a batting order 5 times if you only let him. When the starter isn't hitting the strike zone with every pitch, pull him. He's out. Mears is in. Secret weapon.

Life is tough without a lockdown bullpen.

I gotta give this team credit. They do battle. After the way we lost those two in Pittsburgh, getting this one (and yesterday) shows something.

I keep waiting to hit .500, but that is obviously arbitrary. What I'm really waiting for is a 6-game winning streak. This team has to get real hot to make me a believer. But, hey, they could!

We have played a pretty bad 55 games, but there's 2/3 of the season to go.

I think life is tough when your starters are mostly very young, or very fragile. I have hated how quickly Murphy pulls starters, but I like the point that was made earlier-it was a 1-0 game at the time. The margins are so thin with every aspect of this team. Apparently Murphy has decided to manage every game like a playoff game.

Just remember last year Jackson Chourio's "red-hot" performance in the 2024 MLB season, specifically after a slow start, can be described as a period of significant improvement starting around the beginning of June.. By MLB.com, Chourio's batting average jumped to over .300 in July after a period of struggling in the early months, with his season batting average at .210 at the beginning of June.
