Also Devin Williams and Willy adames is a lesson that can be learned.   Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side.   Maybe where you are at is the best spot for you

Because nobody had this handy, I went to Baseball Savant and looked up the xBA on the blooper that Turang hit that ended the game. It said it was .920.

If that doesn't tell you that those numbers cannot be taken as gospel, if they should be taken seriously at all, nothing will.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Also pulled Bauers for a defensive replacement when the game was tied. Collins struck out twice in Bauers spot in the order

Ideally, Bauers or Collins should be available if you need a PH late in the game as that's pretty much the best the bench has to offer. So yeah, flipping one for the other hamstrung them.

Sorry, I have no idea what happened with the PC resulting in the multiple posts. Please delete.

If you're quoting a post from a prior thread page it doesn't automatically go to the most recent post (i.e. your post) after you post.  I.e., if the thread is on page 5 and you're quoting a post on page 4, after you post it doesn't automatically go to page 5.  Your post will be on page 5, but you will still be looking at page 4.

Hope that helps.

Just say you don't understand what the numbers mean. xBA is just measuring is EV and LA (sprint speed on topped batted balls). It does not factor in what direction you hit the ball. It does not factor in where the defense is positioned. It doesn't factor in backspin/top spin.

Just because you don't know what it means and are trying to interpret it as hit probability doesn't mean it's useless.

Yes I also heard that on the radio, Its a crap shoot if it works or doesn't work.

LOL, but its probably is true.  Dom Cotroneo said the difference between AA baseball and the Bigs is like the difference between just getting your drivers license and being Indy car driver.

Except that, when people cite an xBA on this site they are almost always, if not always, using it to make the point that the hitter was hitting in bad luck. I didn't feel that way about Turang's soft liner in the 7th or his blooper in the 9th.

I think I do understand what the numbers mean, or maybe more importantly, what they don't mean.

Yeah you just don't understand what they are saying. Nobody is saying "oh wow that's unlucky it was caught" on a lineout right at an infielder. They are saying it's unlucky that the ball was hit right at the infielder. Perfect example is the Ortiz lineout to Tatis that you made a fuss about earlier in the thread. Nobody was saying that's unlucky that Tatis caught it. They were saying it was unlucky for Ortiz to put a really nice swing on the ball and have it end up in an OF glove.

When did I make a fuss about Ortiz’s line out? I don’t remember mentioning it at all.

Oh sorry I meant the other Turang liner. But the point remains,

And my point remains that saying that a batter had tough luck just because the xBA is high is flawed logic. I only brought the second one up because the xBA on that one was even higher than on the first one and nobody has said, or probably could say with a straight face, that Turang had bad luck on that weak blooper

I guess we have to agree to disagree on that.

The saying "You can't win them all" is a well-known idiom by Knute Rockne. Who looks very depressed while wearing his church belt with his football uniform after a loss.

If there hadn’t been a SS there it would have been a hit.

If there hadn't been a goalie in the crease, I would've been better than Gretzky.
